A Chinese student in the UK sent an email to her teacher and got an unexpected
reply. "Thank you for your email. I have left to work on my dream of making sweaters for
penguins..." the teacher wrote.
It sounds like a joke, right In fact, sweaters for penguins are a real thing. In the late
1990s, oil spills happened near Phillip Island in Australia. The oil could harm the
penguins' wings, making them cold. Phillip Island Nature Parks used sweaters to keep
the saved birds warm. The sweaters also prevented them from eating the oil on their
bodies before workers cleaned them. So no more penguins would die from it. The
penguin sweater program has been running for over 20 years. Today, the penguins don't
need sweaters anymore. Instead, the sweaters are worn on the bodies of penguin toys.
The money made from selling the toys is used for the wildlife on Phillip Island. This is
another way to protect the penguins!

The Spring Festival is the oldest festival in China. It's also thought the country's most
important traditional festival. And now it has a new title. It's a UNESCO Intangible
Cultural Heritage (ICH). With the Spring Festival newly added, China has 44 items on the
UNESCO ICH List now. Celebrations for the festival start weeks before Chinese New
Year's Day. And they don't end until the Lantern Festival.
Many old Spring Festival traditions still stand today.For example, people hang up red
lanterns and set off fireworks. These are to drive away ghosts. People also paste red
couplets on their doors. This is one of the things done for good luck. Paper cutting,
dragon dances and Lantern Festival events are also important parts of the celebrations.
The Spring Festival falls on the first day of the Chinese calendar. It means the last
year ended. The Spring Festival is now a public holiday in almost 20 countries.One in five
people in the world celebrate it.
