My phone and laptop are never out of touching distance, so I’m constantly posting updates on social media...
I have a never-ending flow of messages and updates from all the people I associate with online.
According to research, over two-thirds of young people find it easier to make friends online than it is “in real life”. I’m way beyond a shy or reserved person, but I’m wired up every day, like most of my friends.
I obsess over exactly how many followers I have on my account, but I can’t remember the birthdays of some of my oldest mates.

Why does social networking that intended to bring people close actually drive close friends away
Because social networking keeps you always online. You focus on online world, and finally ignore people around you. Besides, you are used to chatting with friends online instead of meeting them in real world, which drives each other apart.

If I can see pictures of friends at parties and on social occasions, I feel like I’m at least there in spirit. I think young people’s brains are hard-wired now to expect to be connected to the Internet. Wish me luck as I try to drop social networking for one week!
Reflection
How do you understand “We are hard-wired in, but we are more disconnected than ever.” Why does Mark say we are more disconnected than ever
Reflection
A possible answer:
Mark suggests that young people have been brought up with social networks and that they are an important part of our lives that we can’t live without. However, our addiction to social networks can lead to a loss of friendships or meaningful relationships due to less face-to-face contact in real life.
