Sea stories are something that fascinates everything right from childhood. Sea is mysterious for all of us and stories related to it are sure to get everyone keen and interested. Sea stories are a perfect mix of mystery, adventure, thrill, awe and excitement. So, here we present our pick of the best four sea stories of all times in English literature.
Moby Dick by Herman Melville
This book is not to be missed by all who love sea stories. This is the most famous book about whaling that ever was. Melville got inspired to write this book when he was shipping aboard a Yankee (北方佬) whaler. The three-part climax is the most loved part of the book.
Kon-Tiki by Thor Heyerdahl
In this book, the mission of Heyerdahl is to prove that South American Indians have the option of migrating to Polynesia. He and his crew stand on a light raft and take one of the greatest real-life sea epics of all times.
Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson
This is the grand work of all sea stories. Written in 1883, this adventure novel narrates a tale of “pirates and buried gold”. It is one of the most popular sea novels of all times and its influence on popular perception of pirates with eye patches and one-leg sailors with parrots on their shoulders is dominating the world literature and movies even today.
Sailing Alone Around the World by Joshua Slocum
Slocum is a Canadian who is probably the last of the great American sailor. His fame lies in the fact that he sailed his vessel, the Spray, in an unassisted sailboat. This book is definitely among the best of the real-life sea adventures.
1. What do the works by Heyerdahl and Slocum have in common
A. They have three-part climaxes.
B. They focus on sailing and whaling.
C. Their authors are Canadian sailors.
D. They are based on the authors’ real experiences.
2. If a reader wants to read stories about pirates, which book can he or she choose
A. Moby Dick. B. Kon-Tiki.
C. Treasure Island. D. Sailing Alone Around the World.
3. Where is this passage probably taken from

C. A conference notice. D. A fashion magazine.

YouTube phenomenon IShowSpeed’s recent whirlwind tour of China has unexpectedly evolved into a masterclass in cultural diplomacy (外交) that’s gaining millions of views and challenging Western perceptions of China. The 19-year-old streamer, with his 37 million followers, has become an accidental ambassador for Chinese soft power through his exploration of Beijing and Shanghai.
Speed’s livestreams from China have captured global attention, as he bounced between iconic landmarks like the Great Wall and engaged with locals in impromptu (即兴的,无准备的) interactions. His viral moments — like performing backflips at the Great Wall or challenging locals to ping-pong matches — have generated unprecedented interest in Chinese culture among young global audiences.
His content has created a rare crossover moment between Western and Chinese social media ecosystems. China’ s state media like Global Times have highlighted how his streams represent a new form of cultural exchange, capturing audiences in ways conventional media cannot.
The tour coincides perfectly with China’s efforts to revitalize tourism and reshape its global image. Chinese officials have strategically embraced Speed’s visit, seeing it as an opportunity to present a more nuanced view of the country. Speed's livestreams vividly reflect all aspects of ordinary Chinese people’s daily lives. The comment sections of his videos are filled with viewers expressing surprise at China’s modernity and the warmth of its people — perceptions that differ markedly from typical Western media portrayals.
While skeptics might question whether such visits represent authentic cultural exchange or carefully orchestrated soft power, the impact on viewers remains significant. There’s also open acknowledgment from the likes of Shaun Rein, the founder and Managing Director of the China Market Research Group, who has written numerous books that promote China’ s culture on a global scale. Rein exclaimed, “Speed has done more to help China’s soft power in one day than I have in my 30-year career. All hail Speed.”
IShowSpeed’s China adventures demonstrate how individual content creators can bridge cultural divides in ways traditional diplomacy often fails to achieve.

A. He is assigned as an ambassador in culture exchange.
B. His videos concentrate on traditional Chinese culture.
C. He has shown an intense interest in historical sites.
D. His videos offer a more comprehensive view of China.
5. What mainly made Speed’s China trip viral
A. His insightful perceptions of Chinese culture.
B. His official recognition by Chinese authorities.
C. His massive fan base and authentic engagement.
D. His mastery in backflip skills and ping-pong.
6. The underlined word “nuanced” in paragraph 4 most likely means ______.
A. restful B. detailed C. beautified D. cautious
7. Why does the passage include Shaun Rein’s comment about Speed’s impact
A. To showcase expert proof of Speed’s soft power effect.
B. To express skepticism about Speed’s cultural influence.
C. To demonstrate the value of promoting China’s image.
D. To highlight the inefficiency of traditional diplomacy.

If someone asked you if trees could talk to each other, you might say no. But scientists are listening to trees in whole new ways. Now they think the answer to that question is yes.
Trees don’t whisper to each other on the wind. They talk to each other with the help of fungi (mushrooms) deep underground. Scientists sometimes call this the “wood wide web”, because it's a bit like an internet for trees.
How does it work Imagine following a tree root deep underground. You notice that the roots are covered in fine white fuzz that stretches out into the soil, like a cottony web. Did spiders do this No, the white threads are hyphae, the underground part of mushrooms.
The hyphae’ s job is to soak up minerals and water from the soil. The fungi use some themselves and pass some to the trees they stick to. In exchange, they sip some of the sugar the trees make. These thin fungus (fungi 的单数形式) threads can connect many trees, stretching for miles underground. And trees can use the fungus network to exchange food and chemicals with each other — a tree form of talking.
Scientists discovered this when they were studying how carbon travels through a tree. They fed one tree a special kind of carbon dioxide, and measured where it went in the roots and leaves. To their surprise, they also found the special carbon in the roots of nearby trees — even of completely different species. The trees were sharing!
Trees in a forest can use the underground fungus network to help each other. They send extra sugar along to neighbors who are sick or injured or don’t get enough sun. They can also use the network to warn each other of danger. If a tree is being bitten by bugs, it generates something poisonous to drive away bugs. Other trees taste this through the fungus network. Then its neighbors also start making poison, before the bugs arrive. That way, all the trees will survive.
Trees can also sound the alarm with scents. In Africa, when a giraffe chews on an acacia tree, the leaves release ethylene (乙烯) gas. Leaves on other trees breathe in the ethylene, which motivates them to fill their leaves with poison. Giraffes walk right past them and snack on another tree farther away.
So though trees may be quiet giants, they can say plenty, if you know how to listen.
8. How can trees communicate with each other
A. With the help of wind. B. Via the Internet.
C. With the aid of fungi. D. By exchanging food and sugar.
9. Which statement is TRUE according to the passage
A. Spiders make webs to help with trees’ communication.
B. Fungi take in sugar and minerals from the trees.
C. Trees can exchange food and chemicals with fungi.
D. The fact that trees can share with each other was found accidentally.
10. What is paragraph 6 mainly about
A. Trees can examine whether their neighbors are sick or injured.
B. Trees can produce something special to protect themselves.
C. Trees can help each other in an invisible way.
D. Trees can help prevent their neighbors from bug biting.
11. Why does the author mention giraffes in paragraph 7
A. To call on us to protect wild animals.
B. To tell us another way used by trees to warn neighbor trees.
C. To show us the information that giraffes are particular about the leaves.
D. To tell us that giraffes can motivate trees to release something poisonous.
D
Diets come and diets go. One of the most popular today is “intermittent fasting”, which limits one’ s food intake to certain time windows. One popular variant, the “5-2 diet”, requires eating either very small amounts, or nothing at all, on two days a week, but allows normal eating on the other five.
As a weight-loss strategy, intermittent fasting is simple — no calorie counting or major dietary changes. Limiting the restrictions to a couple of days a week, or several hours a day also requires less willpower, which might make it easier to stick with.
Nichola Ludlam-Raine, a dietitian and spokeswoman for the British Dietetic Association, notes that intermittent fasting seems to work roughly as well for weight loss as traditional calorie-counting does. Beyond weight management, animal studies suggest fasting may extend lifespan by up to 40%, slow aging, and reduce cancer risk.
Exactly how it does all that is not entirely clear. One important factor seems to be autophagy (细胞自噬), the process by which cells break down and recycle parts of themselves. The hope is that intermittent fasting might have a similar response in humans, since we share these biological responses with other animals. But running definitive human trials of the sort done on lab animals is impossible. “When we say‘calorie restriction’ we mean nearly starving[the animals],” says Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher at the University of Surrey.
Current research on intermittent fasting relies on limited, short-term studies using moderate biomarkers like insulin (胰岛素)/ cholesterol (胆固醇) levels. Their results are mixed. A review paper published in April 2024 looked at 23 other studies and concluded that intermittent fasting was slightly better than ordinary dieting for overweight people when it came to improving levels of cholesterol and insulin. A similar article, published in January, found no meaningful difference for either weight loss or cardiovascular (心血管的) health.
There are also risks. A study in mice published in Nature in October 2024 found that severe fasting (where calories were cut by 40%) had downsides, including muscle mass loss and, possibly, weakened immune systems. Moderation, too, should be taken in moderation.
12. Which of the following is practicing intermittent fasting
A. An athlete strictly controlling fat intake as the coach requires.
B. A TV host weighing all food to count calories before eating.
C. An office worker trying to lose weight by eating only 2 meals every day.
D. A clerk on regular meals but skipping meals on Mondays and Thursdays.
13. What can be inferred from paragraph 4
A. Fasting affects humans and animals in the same way.
B. Calorie restriction for animals is milder than for humans.
C. Human trials like animal ones for intermittent fasting are no-gos.
D. Autophagy plays a definite role in explaining the benefits of fasting.
14. What is the author’s attitude towards intermittent fasting
A. Enthusiastic. B. Subjective. C. Favorable. D. Impartial.
15. Which is the best title for the passage
A. The Secrets of Fasting: A Scientific Warning
B. Intermittent Fasting: A Popular but Mysterious Diet
C. Calorie Counting vs. Fasting: Which Works Better
D. From Animal to Human: The Science Behind Fasting
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
While compliments (赞扬) may seem simple, they can have a large impact on you and the people around you, creating a ripple of positivity. However, giving compliments requires skills and knowledge.
Most compliments in our culture follow a very predictable pattern. ___16___ About two-thirds of compliments in the US are made using just five adjectives: nice, good, beautiful, pretty, and great. In addition, about 80% of compliments follow three formats. So if I liked a book you wrote and wanted to say something positive about it, my compliment would probably follow one of these basic patterns: “Your book is great,” “I love your book,” or “That is a terrific book.”
___17___ For example, in 2011 a scholar showed that women in unstructured settings both give and receive far more compliments than men. About three-quarters of women's compliments to other women in an unstructured, informal setting involve appearance. In a goal-oriented, formal setting, 68% of praise statements are about performance. ___18___
Whether the compliment is effective depends on whether it is believable, appropriate, and unqualified. ___19___ If you tell me my hair looks good, I will dismiss it and suspect your motives, because I have little hair. More generally, people with low self-esteem don’t usually receive compliments well. As researchers have shown, in people with high self-esteem, a compliment stimulates parts of the brain responsible for self-referential thinking. This occurs significantly less for people who have low self-esteem.
Even if a compliment agrees with one’s self-image, scholars concluded, it must meet three criteria to be accepted by its object. ___20___ It must be sincere. And it must occur in the appropriate context.
A. They must follow the basic patterns.
B People tend to dismiss praise from those they dislike.
C. The praise must come from a person who is trustworthy.
D. A good compliment must match its receiver’s self-image.
E. They typically focus on appearance, abilities, or belongings.
F. What we choose to compliment varies between men and women.
G. Men, however, often praise each other based on skills in any situation.

Right after I had my first son, I found myself with a surplus of baby formula (奶粉) I couldn’t use due to his stomach issues. Not wanting it to go to waste, I turned to a website for giving away items for free. Shortly afterward, a young woman from my small town reached out, expressing her desperate need for the formula. She explained that her husband had just passed away in an accident, leaving her in a difficult situation. Feeling a tug at my heart, immediately promised to save all the formula for her.
However, three days passed, and I heard nothing. I tried to connect her but failed. My husband suggested might be a cruel joke or maybe some sort of sick tricks. Unwilling to believe it, I decided to give it one last try.
This time I got through. In the telephone, I could hear the tiredness and strain in her voice as she mentioned, she’d just managed to pay her phone bill and had to wait until she could find a way to get closer to town. It was clear she was struggling. Trying to keep my tone neutral, I offered to send the formula to her house. After an awkward silence, she agreed and provided her address.
Once I hung up, I felt compelled to do more than just provide the formula. We checked her address and discovered she lived in a desolate part of town. Her cottage was situated in the middle of the desert, far removed from any public transportation. Realizing how tough her situation must be, I went through my pantry (食品储藏室) fridge, and freezer, gathering anything we could spare. In total, we filled three bags and a laundry hamper with food and essentials.
When we arrived at her home the next day, she welcomed us inside, her face devoid (没有) of emotion. The sight that greeted me was heartbreaking: her living space was almost empty, with only a single couch and a bare kitchen. Even when we unloaded the items, she still seemed almost numb, as if life had drained all the color from her. Without a word, she simply nodded, turned away, and mechanically began making a bottle for her son, her movements slow and detached.

【答案】Dear Ray,
I’m thrilled to hear of your interest in our Campus Labor Festival! You’re warmly welcome to visit our school during the event next Friday. Let me briefly introduce it.
First, students participate in a thorough campus clean-up, such as tidying classrooms and planting colorful flowers and trees around the school to create an inviting atmosphere. Moreover, we organize a handicraft fair where handmade items like recycled art are sold to raise funds for rural schools. Additionally, cooking competitions are held in the cafeteria, allowing us to showcase cooking skills using homegrown vegetables from our school garden. Through this festival we students not only cultivate responsibility, teamwork, and creativity through hands-on labor, but also strengthen our connectivity by combining practical work with charitable causes.
Looking forward to your visit for a memorable experience! Feel free to ask if you need further details!
Yours,
Li Hu

【答案】范文
On the way back home, I couldn’t shake her from my mind. My heart ached for the young woman and her son, their plight echoing in my thoughts. Determined to offer more support, I started researching local resources and support networks that could assist her. I even reached out to a nearby charity organization, explaining her situation and pleading for their help. The response was overwhelming — clothes, toys, and even monetary donations poured in. Each contribution filled me with a sense of warmth and hope, as if we were all part of a larger, compassionate tapestry. Faced with the heartwarming contributions, I prayed that our small gestures would bring them a semblance of comfort and hope.
Several weeks later; the woman came to me. She was visibly different — her face brightened with a smile I hadn’t seen before and her eyes, once tired and strained, now sparkled with gratitude. She thanked me profusely, holding her son in her arms, looking much more at ease. “Thank you for restoring our faith in humanity. Your kindness has given us strength to keep going.” she said, her voice filled with gratitude. Her joy and relief were so genuine that it moved me deeply. Observing the positive transformation in her bestowed upon me a sense of gratification and strengthened my belief in the power of kindness and community backing.
