Mount Kilimanjaro, located in Tanzania, features five distinct climatic zones. It’s famous for being the tallest mountain in Africa with a height of 5,895 meters above sea level.
Although located just 300 kilometers from the equator (赤道), Kilimanjaro remains snow-capped throughout the year. The origin of its name is unclear, but by the 1860s, European explorers had adopted the name.
Hiking Destination
Mount Kilimanjaro is a famous hiking destination rather than a climbing destination. Despite its height and status as one of the world's seven peaks, it does not require technical climbing skills. About 30,000 people attempt to climb Kilimanjaro each year, but only 50% succeed, with altitude sickness (高原反应) being the main reason for failure.
Notable Records and Achievements
Speed Climbs: Karl Egloff climbed and went down Kilimanjaro in 6 hours and 42 minutes in 2014. Killian Jornet reached Uhuru Peak in 5 hours and 23 minutes in 2010. Simon Mtuy achieved the fastest unaided climb and down in 9 hours and 19 minutes in 2006.
Oldest Climber: Ann Lorimor climbed Kilimanjaro in 2019 at the age of 89.
Youngest Climber: Keats Boyd climbed Kilimanjaro at the age of 7.
Disabled Climbers: Individuals like Spencer West and Aaron Phipps, who are blind, have successfully reached the peak, highlighting Kilimanjaro’s accessibility.
Historical Significance
First Climbers: Hans Meyer, Ludwig Purtscheller, and Yohani Kinyala Lauwo were the first to climb Kilimanjaro in 1889.
First Woman Climber: A Scottish woman climbed to the peak in 1927.
Since 1912. Kilimanjaro has lost about 80% of its glaciers (冰川), and scientists predict they could disappear completely by 2050. To tackle climate change, about 5 million trees were planted at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro in 2008.
1. Why do half of the people fail to climb Kilimanjaro successfully
A. The weather is too bad. B. The mountain is too high.
C. They suffer from altitude sickness. D. They lack technical climbing skills.

Diving into the ocean is second nature to Barrington Scott, a Marine veteran (老兵) who finds peace 65 feet below the surface. “Scuba (水肺) diving is really relaxing for me,” Scott said. “When I’m underwater, I’m calm and collective.”
Scott, who learned to swim only after joining the Marines, first experienced scuba diving more than a decade ago. “It’s a whole different environment,” he said. “It was amazing.” That initial dive fueled an enthusiasm that led to a once-in-a-lifetime achievement: A Guinness World Records title for the fastest time to scuba dive on al lseven continents. It took 19 days, 19 hours and 40 minutes, beating the previous mark of 30 days. “I’m definitely shocked, excited and proud,” Scott said upon learning of his record.
Scott, 33, grew up in the Bronx, New York. He was in foster care (寄养) until he was adopted at age 12. When he was younger, Scott didn’t have many opportunities to explore water activities. “Growing up, I was always that kid trying new things,” he said. “It was the openness to do anything that shook of the fear of trying new things.” His underwater journeys have taken him to 17 countries, with each dive offering unique experiences. When asked about his most exciting dive, Scot didn’t hesitate: “Antarctica,” he said, though he admitted that he didn’t see anything during the dive.
In November, 2024, Scott began his 30,000-mile adventure across all seven continents. Even in winter, and despite the cold water, diving to 30 feet created a sense of serenity. “I didn’t have a lot of ways to relax prior to scuba diving.” Scot reflected. “However, ever since I took up scuba diving, I’ve discovered a lot of places where I can just be at peace or feel safe, which has become a great source of relaxation for me.”
From his first dive to his most recent, Scott said the sport “has taught me patience. It has taught me to be mindful. Every dive is a journey. Every experience is shaping me.”
4. What contributes most to Scott’s breaking a Guinness World Record
A. His passion for diving. B. His military training.
C. His childhood experiences. D. His frequent visits to Antarctica.
5. What can we know about Scott’s childhood
A. He was adopted when he was young. B. He was not interested in water activities.
C. He led a terrible life during his childhood. D. He had many chances to explore water activities.
6. Which of the following words can best describe Scott
A. Patient and shy. B. Fearful and generous.
C. Strong-willed and helpful. D. Open-minded and adventurous.
7. What does the underlined word “serenity” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Anxiety. B. Excitement. C. Calmness. D. Tiredness.

Research shows that long-term interaction with AI chatbots can influence users’ emotional responses and social behaviors. ChatGPT users’ emotions during exchanges with ChatGPT may be mirrored or amplified (增强) by the AI, impacting their mental state.
Too much reliance on chatbots may weaken real-life social connections or even worsen loneliness. However, AI has potential as an emotional support tool, helping to reduce loneliness and improve mental well-being. Thus, more research is needed to understand the emotional dependence that forms between users and AI and to guide responsible use.
In a study, the Media Lab gathered almost 1,000 people to take part in a four-week trial examining how participants interacted with ChatGPT for a minimum of five minutes each day. Participants then completed a survey to measure their feelings of loneliness, levels of social engagement, and emotional dependence on the bot. The findings support earlier research. For example, in 2023 MIT Media Lab researchers found that chatbots tended to mirror the emotional state of a user’s messages-happier messages led to happier responses.
Dr. Andrew Rogoyski, a director at the Surrey Institute for People-Centred Artificial Intelligence, said that because people were hard-wired to think of a machine behaving in human-like ways as a human, AI chatbots could be “dangerous”, and far more research was needed to understand their social and emotional impacts. “In my opinion, we’re messing with people’s basic emotions without knowing the long-term effects. We’ve seen the downsides of social media-this could be even worse,” he said.
Dr. Theodore Cosco, a researcher at the University of Oxford, said the research raised “serious concerns about heavy chatbot usage”, though he noted it “opens the door to exciting and encouraging possibilities”. “The idea that AI systems can offer meaningful support-particularly for those who may otherwise feel lonely-is worth exploring. However, we must be thoughtful and intentional in how we integrate these tools into everyday life,” said Dr. Doris Dippold, who researches intercultural communication at the University of Surrey. She added, “It would be important to establish what causes emotional dependence on chatbots.”
8. What does the research say about the effects of long-term use of AI chatbots on users
A. It can improve their social skills. B. It can enhance their intelligence.
C. It can increase their physical activity. D. It can affect their emotional experience.
9. Why does Dr. Andrew Rogoyski think AI chatbots are “dangerous”
A. AI chatbots mirror users'emotions.
B. People naturally perceive Al chatbots as humans.
C. Overuse of Al chatbots may increase loneliness.
D. AI chatbots could potentially replace human roles.
10. What can be inferred from the experts’ comments in the last paragraph
A. Experts adopt a cautious approach to Al chatbots.
B. Experts think Al chatbots’ long-term effects are clear.
C. Experts agree that Al chatbots have no potential benefits.
D. Experts believe emotional dependence on chatbots is fully understood.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. The Rise of AI Chatbots B. AI Chatbots: A Friend or an Enemy
C. The Future of AI Chatbots D. AI Chatbots: A Good Way to Communicate

For more than 3,500 years, the remains of the Xiaohe people lay undisturbed in Xinjiang until they were unearthed in 1979. Among the treasures dug up was the oldest preserved cheese in the world, spotted around the remains' neck.
Now a team of researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences reports the first genetic (基因的) analysis of the cheese. Their results paint a picture of a rich Bronze Age culture that exchanged animals with other neighbouring peoples and may have helped spread cheese around East Asia. Just why they were buried with the stuff, though, remains imperfectly understood.
During their analysis, the team identified the DNA from a goat whose milk went into the cheeses, before comparing it with 185 previously sequenced (排序) goat genes. The genetic profile of the Xiaohe goat was similar to that of goats belonging to ancient Eurasian Steppe people, meaning the Xiaohe people may have learned cheese-making from them.
All the Xiaohe cheeses would have been produced by drying kefir, a milk-based drink made with bacteria (细菌) such as Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens. The team, therefore, sequenced the DNA of that one bacterium and compared it with 15 modern varieties in order to identify its place within that species' family tree. Their analysis showed that it belonged to a subspecies that could have spread with kefir-making customs from Xinjiang to regions including Tibet.
The authors suspect that the cheese was an attractive alternative to raw milk, which contains a substance to which many modern-day Asians are intolerant. But it is possible that it was the kefir drink, rather than the cheese, that was the main attraction, says Paul Kindstedt, a cheese chemist and historian. It holds about 1% alcohol by volume. People in Mongolia today use kefir to make milk-based alcohol; the Xiaohe people may have done so too.
"Ancient-cheese DNA analysis-of which this may be the first example-could reveal secrets about numerous other cultures. There are milk-related remains on 7,000-year-old European pots, for example, and cheese may also have been used in ancient Egyptian burial practices," says Dr. Kindstedt.
12. What can we learn about the Xiaohe people from the first two paragraphs
A. They preferred an undisturbed life. B. They interacted with other cultures.
C. They conducted odd burial practices. D. They traded metal for animals and cheese.
13. Why did the researchers study the DNA of Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens
A. To restructure its genetic composition. B. To identify its influence on the species.
C. To source the cheese-making techniques. D. To illustrate the cheese-making procedures.
14. What is paragraph 5 mainly about
A. Why Asian people like cheese. B. How cheese became popular.
C. Attractive alternatives to raw milk. D. The alcoholic volume of the kefir drink.
15. What does Dr. Kindstedt intend to emphasize in the last paragraph
A. The consistency of the analysis. B. The prospects of the analysis.
C. The wide application of the cheese. D. The cultural implication of the cheese.

Before attending a hockey (冰球) game between the Seattle Kraken and the Vancouver Canucks, Nadia Popovici’s main concern was which sports shirt to wear.
Originally from Canada, the hockey fan only started rooting for the Kraken after moving to Seattle, the Washington area a few years ago. That night she chose to wear the Seattle shirt, although she was seated directly behind the Canucks’ bench. As it turned out, Nadia was sitting exactly where she needed to be.
Twenty-two-year-old Nadia plans to attend medical school next year, and she has already developed a sharp eye for anything that doesn’t look quite right. As she watched the game, she happened to spot an irregularly-shaped mole (痣) on the back of one of the Canucks’ staff members, Brian Red Hamilton is the assistant equipment manager for the team, and he had no idea that he even had a mole back there, much less a concerning one.
“I spotted some of the classic signs, you know, irregular borders, a bit of color change, and it was pretty big,” Nadia recalled. She wondered whether or not she should let him know, eventually deciding to go for it. “I thought, you know, it can't hurt just to say something.”
Since Red couldn’t hear her through the glass, Nadia typed out a message on the Notes app of her iPhone. Red admits that he didn’t think much of it when he read her message, but later he had the team doctor take a look at it. It turned out to be the worst kind of skin cancer, called malignant melanoma.
The mole was removed by a doctor several days later. Red and his family were flooded with gratitude for Nadia's message, and the Canucks posted a message to fans asking for their help locating his mysterious “angel”.

Last Sunday, our school held a hiking event for teachers and students, during which many touching incidents took place.
One unforgettable moment was when our head teacher Ms. Zhang, who was usually strict, carried a student’s water bottle for him after he felt too tired to hold it. Another student, Tom, tripped and fell, but several peers immediately stopped to help him up, dusting off his clothes and comforting him until he was okay again.
These small yet meaningful acts of kindness truly warmed my heart. They reminded me that care and support are always around us, making our journey together even more enjoyable.
