How do we change most of the verbs into their past forms
By adding -ed.
Last term, I tried roller skating for the first time.
Read the table and the second tip on page 85. Then summarize the ways to change regular verbs into their past forms.
Most verbs walk→walked
Verbs ending in -e love→loved
Verbs ending in a consonant + y try→tried
Short verbs ending in a vowel + a consonant stop→stopped

double the

We form the simple past tense of irregular verbs differently. We do not add -ed.

Why do we change “enjoy” into “enjoyed” but “study” into “studied”
Because we make the past form of verbs ending in a vowel + y by adding -ed.
e.g. enjoy→enjoyed stay→stayed
But we make the past form of verbs ending in a consonant + y by cutting out -y and then adding -ied.
e.g. study→studied try→tried
I (6) enjoyed (enjoy) the camping trip ...
