You may notice the moon looking bigger and closer when it is full and near the horizon(地平
线).This is because your mind judges (判断)the size of an object by comparing it with other things.
Imagine you are standing outside, close to your house. The house will look big and the moon next
to it will look normal. But if you look at the house from far away,it will look very small while the
moon will look huge.
Actually, the moon is so far away that no matter where you are on Earth, it always looks the
same size. However, the things—a house, a mountain or anything else—that are compared with the
moon have "changing"sizes. They look bigger or smaller depending on how far away from them
you are.
There are several explanations that sound plausible but wrong for the moon illusion(错觉),such
as the idea that on some nights the moon really is closer. The moon's orbit(轨道)is not perfectly round,
so the moon does get nearer and farther away during a month. When the close part of the orbit meets a
full moon,it's called a supermoon. But when the moon is closest to Earth,it is only about 12%to 15%
closer than when it is farthest from Earth—too small a difference to explain the moon illusion. It is
hard to notice a 15%difference in size by just looking at the moon alone in the sky.
Next time you see the moon looking bigger and closer than usual, hold out your hand, then close
one eye and see which finger just covers the moon.Wait a little while until the moon moves higher
into the sky and try the experiment(试验)again. The moon may look smaller, but your same finger will
cover it just the same!
( )61.The moon appears larger near the horizon because
A.it is actually closer to Earth at that moment
B.the mind compares its size with nearby objects
C.it gives off more light when low in the sky
D.its orbit becomes perfectly round
( )62.The underlined word“plausible ”in Para.3 probably means “______”.
A.seemingly reasonable B.impossible C.funny D.strange
( )63.What can we learn about a supermoon
A.It is a full moon. B.It happens twice a year.
C.It is farthest from Earth. D.It explains the moon illusion.
( )64.Which activity can help test the moon illusion
A.Comparing the moon's size at different times of a month.
B.Looking at the moon through a telescope(望远镜).
C.Use your finger to cover the moon at different heights in the sky.
D.Watching the moon next to a house or a mountain.
( )65.Which moon in the picture may look the biggest according to the text
A.A B.B C.C D.D
