Robert Frost (USA,1874-1963)
Frost loved writing about the countryside in New England. His poems, like The Road Not Taken, use simple scenes (like a road in the woods) to talk about big life questions. such as making choices. Though he worked as a farmer, his poems became famous and won him prizes.

In the fall of 1985,I was a bright eyed girl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty one years later I am later I am still a bright eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell.
My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college at the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait.
Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopt and biological children. In 1999, we adopted our first son. To lay eyes on him was fantastic...and very emotional. A year later came our second adopted boy. Then followed son No. 3. In 2003, I gave birth to another boy.
You can imagine how fully occupied I became, raising four boys under the age of 8!Our home was a complete zoo...a joyous zoo. Not surprising, I never did make it back to college full time. But I never gave up on the dream either. I had only one choice: to find a way. That meant talking as few as one class each semester.
The hardest part was feeling guilty about the time I spent away from the boys. They often wanted me to stay home with them. There certainly were times I wanted to quit. But I knew I should set an example for them to follow through the rest of their lives.
In 2007, I graduated from the University of North Carolina. It took me over 21 years to get my college degree!
I am not special, just single minded. It always struck me that when you’re looking at a big challenge from the outside it looks huge, but when you’re in the midst of it, it just seems normal. Everything you want won’t arrive in your life on one day. It’s a process. Remember; little steps add up to big dreams.

In the year 2075 humanity’s dream of living beyond Earth had become a reality. The Mars Colony, established two decades earlier, was now home to over 50,000 people. Among them was 16-year-old Lila, who had never set foot on Earth but often listened to her mother’s stories about the blue planet.
Life on Mars was both fascinating and challenging. The colony was surrounded by a giant glass dome (穹顶) to protect residents from the thin atmosphere and extreme temperatures. Inside, artificial gravity kept everyone from floating away, and air purifiers worked 24/7 to turn the carbon-dioxide-rich air into breathable oxygen. “We’re lucky to have these technologies,” Lila’s mother often said. “When I first arrived, the water recycling system wasn’t as efficient, and we had to ration water strictly.”
One evening, Lila asked her mother, “Why do people still talk about Earth so much Isn’t Mars our home now ” Her mother smiled sadly and replied, “Earth was once a beautiful place with green forests, blue oceans, and countless species. But pollution, climate change, and wars destroyed much of it. Now, scientists are working on a ‘Ecological Rehabilitation Project’ to bring back its natural beauty. Maybe one day, you’ll get to see it.”
Lila looked at the hologram of Earth on her desk — a planet covered in gray cities and dry deserts, but with small patches of green where the rehabilitation project was working. She wondered if Earth could ever be as vibrant as the old photos her mother showed her. “Don’t lose hope,” her mother said, placing a hand on her shoulder. “Science fiction once imagined life on Mars; now it’s our reality. Who knows what future we can create for Earth ”
8. What is the purpose of the glass dome in the Mars Colony
A. To keep the air warm.
B. To protect people from the harsh environment.
C. To generate artificial gravity.
D. To recycle water for daily use.
9. Why does Lila’s mother mention the “Ecological Rehabilitation Project”
A. To explain why Mars is a better home than Earth.
B. To show that science fiction can become real.
C. To describe the problems on Earth, like pollution.
D. To hope that Earth might recover its beauty.
10. What does the word “rehabilitation” (Paragraph 3) most nearly mean
A. Destruction. B. Restoration. C. Imagination. D. Pollution.
11. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Life on Mars is perfect with advanced technology.
B. Earth has become uninhabitable due to human mistakes.
C. Science fiction inspires real-life innovations and environmental efforts.
D. Teenagers in the Mars Colony don’t care about Earth’s problems.

The Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt is one of the most famous iconic attractions in the world. Built around 4,500 years ago, it has long puzzled scientists and historians: How did ancient people build such a huge structure without modern machines New research now gives us some answers.
The Stones and Construction
Scientists studied the stones used in the pyramid. Each stone weighs about 2.5 tons, and there are over 2million such stones. They found that the stones were not just cut from mountains nearby. Some stones came from faraway places, but ancient Egyptians used the Nile River to move them by boat. This was a clever way to transport heavy stones without trucks or cranes.
The Workers’ Lives
For a long time, people thought slaves built the pyramid. But recent studies of workers’ tombs show they were free Egyptians. These workers had families, and the king’s officials took care of them. They worked in teams, and some were builders, some were cooks, and others were doctors. This shows the pyramid was built by a large group of organized workers, not slaves.
The Science of Shapes
The pyramid’s shape is a perfect square-based pyramid. Scientists found that the ancient Egyptians used simple tools to measure angles (角度) and lines. For example, they used a rope with 12 equal knots to make a right angle (直角), which helped them build the pyramid’s straight sides. The pyramid’s top points exactly to the north, showing their understanding of astronomy (天文学) and math.
Why It Still Stands
The Great Pyramid has survived thousands of years because of its strong structure. The stones fit together so tightly that even a knife can’t go between them. Scientists say the pyramid’s shape helps it stand against wind and earthquakes. It’s a great example of ancient people’s wisdom and engineering skills.
12. What can we learn about the stones of the Great Pyramid
A. All stones were found near the pyramid.
B. Most stones were too small to weigh 2.5 tons.
C. Ancient Egyptians moved some stones by water.
D. Modern machines helped cut the stones.
13. Why does the passage mention “a rope with 12 equal knots”
A. To show ancient Egyptians’ love for art.
B. To explain how they measured right angles.
C. To prove the pyramid’s top points to the north.
D. To describe the shape of the pyramid’s sides.
14. What can we infer about the pyramid workers
A. They worked alone without any teamwork.
B. They had different jobs within the group.
C. They were not allowed to have families.
D. They came from countries outside Egypt.
15. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To compare the Great Pyramid with modern buildings.
B. To question the historical importance of the pyramid.
C. To introduce new scientific findings about the pyramid.
D. To encourage readers to visit the Great Pyramid.

One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more way for her to solve my strange problem—inability (没能力)to read.
In the library, I found my way into the “Children’s Room”. I pulled a few books off the shelf and sat down on the floor. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of dog. I had recently had a dog, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. He was the one I could share secrets with, but later he was given away to someone who had space and money to care for him. I never forgot my dog.
On the book’s cover, there was a dog which looked the same as mine. I figured the picture of the dog on the cover. My eyes ran across the little, Amos, the Dog with a Plan. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
Under the shade of a bush, I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty and got the main ides of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. At the end of the story, my mind continued the final scene of reunion. When I finished my reading, a stream of tears ran down my cheeks. It was until then that I realized I had begun to overcome my inability to read. Thus, this was the very first book for me which I had read through and deeply immersed myself in the real scene.
