Good morning, my dear fellow doctors, welcome to the TCM Promotion Conference today. Our schedule
today includes 3 lectures and 4 academic seminars. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) refers to the study of
human body, disease diagnosis and the prevention and control of diseases. For thousands of years, Chinese people
have accumulated rich experience in fighting against diseases, thus forming their own unique medical theory. It
has its own basic principles of diagnosis and treatment, which build the foundation of a systematical theory.
TCM is often interpreted to be the medical science developed by the Han Chinese. There are many other
branches of medicine in China, such as Tibetan medicine and Miao medicine, which can be called ethnic medicine.
Currently, many Asian countries, such as Thailand and Vietnam, are also practising TCM. What WHO has proved
is that it can help ease post-surgery pains, discomfort caused by pregnancy and toothache. Meanwhile, the
effectiveness of Zhenjiu and herbs is also well proved by scientific evidence. On May 26, 2002, WHO issued a
document that called on 180 countries to adopt TCM as an alternative in their medical policies. Now, let’s
welcome the first lecturer today...

As an ordinary man, I have a special habit to confess. Whenever I walk down the street, I offer to pour a
bottle of water from the nearby river into the dirt of a street tree. It’s just my personal habit, and I think it doesn’t
make a difference, but I’d like to do it. I mention this in light of a campaign launched by the Arboricultural
Association to call on the public to water new street trees.
The UK government has committed to planting millions of trees to help meet climate targets and aims to
increase tree cover from 14.5% to 16.5% by 2050. However, as John Parker, chief executive of the Arboricultural
Association, says, “Planting a tree is just the start of the story. The health and survival of new urban trees is
threatened by increasingly dry weather. It is recommended that the newly planted trees be given about 50 litres of
water per week for the first three years.” While in rural settings, the newly planted trees and woods can take care
of themselves and adapt, the challenging conditions mean trees in the urban areas need a bit more care.
Long ago, I assumed that the good of street trees was to soften the hard edges of urban environments. But,
what an underestimation of tree power that was! A study from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities illustrates
they can provide inspiration or a calming atmosphere in an otherwise crowded city. Trees are responsible for
easing urban heat island effects and air and pollutant filtration. And I think they provide the habitat for wildlife,
especially birds.
Trees can’t run away. Unfortunately for them and fortunately for urban residents, city trees are stuck with us.
If we want to continue enjoying all the good they do, we should try to understand their needs and do all that we
can to support them. A bottle of water won’t do much, but next time you all together have a bucket of water to
pour, you know what big effect will happen.
24.What does the author think of his personal habit
A.It is of little effect. B.It is enforced.
C.It is of much significance. D.It is common.
25.What does John Parker say about urban trees
A.They have started to be watered regularly.
B.More work needs to be done for their living.
C.They are threatened by the increasing flood.
D.The newly planted ones can’t look after themselves.
26.What can we learn about street trees from paragraph 3
A.Their usage is overrated.
B.Their value is thought highly of by the public.
C.They benefit residents physically and mentally.
D.They can thoroughly solve environmental problems.
27.What can be concluded from the last paragraph
A.When in need, ask for it. B.Tall trees catch much wind.
C.Many hands make light work. D.Misfortunes seldom come alone.

Schools need to give students all the tools they need when they graduate. Besides teaching the basics of
reading, writing, and arithmetic, teaching about mindfulness, and mental health are important life skills for young
people to have. The state of Florida agrees.
Now, public schools in Florida have been required to teach five or more hours about mental health for
students in grades 6-12. This new idea was welcomed by the Florida Board of Education in July and is being
carried out as a potential lifesaver.
The new curriculum requires-students to learn about the symptoms (症状) of mental illness and where to
find help if they are feeling sad or have other problems and even teaches the teenagers how to help their friends
and classmates if they see them struggling.
“We know that 50 percent of all mental illness cases begin by age 14, so we are being active in our
commitment to provide our kids with the necessary tools to see them through their successes and challenges.
Providing mental health instruction is another important step forward in supporting our families,” Education
Commissioner Richard Corcoran said.
Florida is the third state, following New York and Virginia in 2020, to pass laws that require mental health
education in schools. According. to CNN, the New York law updated the health curriculum to include mental
health for elementary, middle and high school students. The Virginia law required that mental health education be
provided for 9th and 10th graders.
These three states in the US are taking bold steps to help youth deal with the intricacy of life as they grow
from teenagers into adults. It is a confusing world they face and giving them the tools they need is essential.
Mental health is something that should be taught in schools in all the US and across the globe.
28.What can the new curriculum-bring students
A.Basic professional skills. B.The ability to use language.
C.Emotional handling skills. D.Skills that cure physical diseases.
29.What does Richard Corcoran intend to stress in paragraph 4
A.The steps of mental health instruction. B.The consequences of mental illness cases.
C.The importance of mental health education. D.The content of the mental health curriculum.
30.What does the underlined word “intricacy” mean in paragraph 6
A.Complexity. B.Process. C.Trick. D.Balance.
31.Where is the text probably taken from
A.A technology report. B.An educational website.
C.A government document. D.A natural science magazine.

The U. S. is in the midst of a “loneliness epidemic”. For a lot of people, the feeling is even more noticeable
during the holidays. In addition to the emotional impact of chronic loneliness, it has some dramatic health
consequences: increased risk of heart disease and stroke, infections, cancer, even death.
People may feel lonely when their social needs are not met by the people around them. Laetitia
Mwilambwe-Tshilobo, a social cognitive neuroscientist at Princeton University, says loneliness epidemic captures
two distinct groups: first, people with a low number of social connections; second, people who feel they have poor
quality existing relationships.
Elisa Baek, a social neuroscientist at the University of Southern California, co-authored a study that looked at
whether lonely people view the world differently than non-lonely people, specifically among college freshmen.
Baek found that while non-lonely people were all similar in their neural responses, lonely people had responses
that were really different — not just from the non-lonely group, but also from each other. Baek says that these
idiosyncrasies (特性) in how lonely participants process the world, “may pose challenges in how these people are
able to achieve social connection and feel connected with others.”
To study these changes to the brain, Baek’s team collected fMRI data — a measure of blood flow changes
in the brain — while first-year college students watched short videos to measure how similarly participants’
brains responded to the videos. The videos ranged from dramatic and comedic clips to instructional
demonstrations in order to reproduce experiences participants might have in daily life. She says it’s the closest
they could get to study people’s brain activity — and how they process the world — while they were going
about their lives.
Mwilambwe-Tshilobo, who is not involved in the study, says the research accurately highlights how
individual differences affect people in experiencing loneliness. “Trying to connect more deeply with one or two or
three other people may be more important than to try to get to know everybody and being on good terms with
everybody. It doesn’t have to be someone who is like-minded. It’s more like: How can we get on the same page
with people who we might not start off on the same page with, but that might form deeper connections
afterwards ” she adds.
32.Which description best characterizes the “loneliness epidemic”
A.Harmful mentally and physically. B.Exclusive to people with few friends.
C.Striking throughout the year. D.Spreading between people.
33.What can be inferred from the study conducted by Elisa Baek
A.Its findings focus on the differences between lonely and non-lonely people.
B.It targets freshman students at the University of Southern California.
C.It casts light on how lonely people perceive the world.
D.It challenges lonely people to be more social.
34.What is required of the videos for the study
A.To monitor the response speed. B.To model everyday situations.
C.To study the recreational activities. D.To look into the brain structures.
35.What advice might Mwilambwe-Tshilobo give to lonely people
A.Expand the social network. B.Befriend with those in high places.
C.Seek out friends who think alike. D.Deepen connections with patience.
【答案】32.A 33.C 34.B 35.D

故选 A。
Elisa Baek, a social neuroscientist at the University of Southern California,
co-authored a study that looked at whether lonely people view the world differently than non-lonely people,
Baek found that while non-lonely people
were all similar in their neural responses, lonely people had responses that were really different — not just from
the non-lonely group, but also from each other.
The videos ranged from dramatic and comedic clips to instructional
demonstrations in order to reproduce experiences participants might have in daily life.(这些视频内容从戏剧和喜
Trying to connect more deeply with one or two or three other people may
be more important than to try to get to know everybody and being on good terms with everybody. It doesn’t have

For 27 years, Mao Shihua 56 (be) a permanent fixture for the residents of Huangtankou, selling
breakfast to schoolchildren from her simple stall (货 摊 ) meters away from a primary school. 57
(fond) nicknamed “Breakfast Nanny”, Mao served food that was both nutritious and cheap. Each item cost just
half a yuan, 58 the price was never raised.
Mao’s “day” began at 2 am, 59 she would start preparing the breakfast items. Around 5:30,
Mao would ride a tricycle cart to her stall to sell the breakfast, and remained there till 7:30 am. 60
hours of preparing and selling the breakfast, Mao barely made 50 yuan a day. She would often need to dip into her
pension (养老金) 61 (cover) costs. Even owners of neighboring stalls would admit that Mao made
no money out of her business.
However, Mao didn’t care. The hours she spent serving food to the children living in the mountainous area
was the 62 (happy) part of her day.
When 90-year-old Mao died on December 18, 2023, netizens from around the country expressed their
63 (admire) for her and grief over her death, praising her as 64 “ordinary hero”.
In 2019, inspired by Mao, the public service center established the “1-yuan caring breakfast” store. From 7

special groups such as sanitation workers and elderly people.

56.had been 57.Fondly 58.and 59.when 60.Despite 61.to cover 62.happiest 63.
admiration 64.an 65.priced
根据句中的“For 27 years”和后文中的“When 90-year-old Mao died on December 18, 2023”可知,
填 had been。
故填 and。
to cover。
空前的“the”和空后的“part of her day”可知,这里表示一天中最快乐的时间,应用 happy 的最高级 happiest。
故填 happiest。
故填 an。

It began as a typical January day. The grey skies were heavy with snow and wind in front of Valleyview
School. I was in my first year of teaching and had no idea that this approaching snowstorm would be so severe.
By mid-day the principal called the school buses back so the three hundred kids could get home safely
before it was too late. My students gathered their belongings, excited to go home early. The buses arrived but the
storm suddenly worsened before the waiting kids could board and it was quickly clear no one was going anywhere
soon. By now the bus drivers and a couple of snowplow (铲雪车) operators were discussing the situation. There
were over three hundred children, staff, bus and snowplow drivers stuck inside the school.
Night approached and the storm showed no signs of stopping. We were facing some basic questions. What
would we feed several hundred children for dinner Where would they sleep
Earl, our school gatekeeper, began working non-stop to keep the heater running. Concerned about the old
pipes freezing, he wrapped them with whatever material he could find. With our electricity lines swaying under
the increasing weight of ice and snow in heavy winds, what would we do if we lost power A plan was definitely
needed.
Every parent was called to reassure them that their children were safe, and then people who lived close
enough to brave the storm were called and asked if they could help. Soon, a handful of people had managed to
travel through the heavy and blinding snow bringing bags of sandwiches, tinned juices, blankets and a couple of
board games. One woman, who lived right on the edge of the school, wrapped herself up and felt through the
blinding snow with a huge kettle and enough ingredients to make tomato soup for at least half of the school. There
wasn’t a lot of food, but everything was shared, no one went hungry , and no one complained.

One possible version:
Before night fell, we worked out entertaining and sleeping arrangements for the kids. As the evening came,
the school gymnasium transformed into a makeshift dormitory, with rows of mats laid out for the children to sleep
on. Teachers took turns telling stories and leading sing-alongs to keep spirits high. Despite the challenging
circumstances, the children remained surprisingly cheerful, their laughter echoing through the halls. Some of the
older students even organized talent shows and games to keep everyone entertained. Meanwhile, the staff worked
tirelessly to ensure that everyone was comfortable and safe throughout the night.
The next morning the snow stopped and people began to clear the snow. Parents and nearby residents
arrived with shovels in hand, ready to help dig out the buses and snowplows a path through the snow. The
community spirit was truly inspiring, and together we were able to clear a path for the buses to finally depart. As
the last bus pulled away, cheers erupted from those who remained behind. It was a challenging experience, but
one that brought us all closer together. Looking back, it wasn’t just the snowstorm that made that day memorable
— it was the resilience and kindness shown by everyone involved.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
