Ershi Wenchuang (儿时文创) is a shop in Shibati, Yuzhong, Chongqing.
Its name basically means “childhood
culture”, and it lives up to its name.
The other day, I visited the shop with my parents. At the front was an old TV and a show was playing on it.
On the wall were old pictures of movie stars and singers from the old days. There was also an old bike by the door. A white box with the word “popsicles (冰棍) ” was put behind the seat.
After I walked in, another old TV caught my eye. It was connected to a video game: Super Mario! At first, I thought the game was boring. But once I found out my parents played it when they were kids, I was really excited to try it out. The game was easy but so interesting. I was surprised at how such a simple game could be so fun.
The store sold products from the old days. They were mostly snacks and little toys such as Dada Bubble Gum or wind-up frogs. In the end, I bought a packet of preserved plums (话梅) , the kind my mom used to eat. After walking out of the store, I gobbled up (狼吞虎咽) the plums. They tasted so sweet. It was unbelievable that my parents could have such a fun childhood even though they went through many difficulties.
They didn’t have the fancy (炫酷的) technology we have today. So perhaps today, we don’t really need too much of that either.

This is why scientists are hoping for and working on something new, something that will change our lives just as greatly as smart phones do. At the moment, the next invention might be smart glasses.
Just imagine. Instead of having to pick up your phone and look at the screen, all of the information you need simply appears in front of you, in your glasses. Satellite navigation directions (卫星导航方向) would appear right there on the road. And your smart glasses could guide you to the right shelf in the supermarket!
Smart glasses could also be used in industry. They could show engineers the instructions they need to fix things more quickly.
A doctor could carry out a difficult operation, guided in real time by someone on the other side of the world.
This may sound impossible. But most of the technologies to invent them are already there. For example, one key technology is called AR, which can make digital 3D objects appear as if they are part of the real world. We’ve used it a lot in our video calls. Similarly, huge progress has been made in spatial audio (空间音频).
This means a sound is made to give it a sense of place, like what you hear in an empty room. Some high-end earphones (高端耳机) can already do that. Future glasses will of course need to recognize your voice to do tasks. This technology has been widely used in our daily life.
So, why aren’t we all wearing smart glasses yet So far, no one has invented a good way to send images of our world onto glasses. However, with the rapid development of the technology, smart glasses could arrive much sooner than we think.
