International Volunteer Day
December 5th is the International Volunteer Day. This important day was started by the United Nations (UN) in 1985. Its aim is to thank volunteers around the world for giving their time and energy to help others and to encourage more people to do volunteer work.
Today, more than 100 countries, including China, hold volunteer activities on this day. The International Volunteer Day, as an important symbol(象征) of international volunteer activities, is now deeply rooted(植根于) in the hearts of people.

Nowadays, 300 to 500 million volunteers around the world work more than 15 billion hours a year. And the UN urges governments around the world to develop volunteer service awareness(意识) among people. One great thing about volunteer work is that it makes you feel like a useful person to society.

I’ve been a volunteer for seven years.
What do the volunteers do at the shelter
Each year we find thousands of animals that need our help. This means a lot of work in many different areas. Some volunteers help out with the daily care of the animals.They feed and exercise them and make sure their cages are clean. Others help owners find their lost pets or sort out animal adoptions.
Can you give some information about adoption
Before adoption, a vet checks the animal and vaccinates it. It costs 1500 yuan to adopt an animal, but that also includes the vet services. Since the shelter opened in 2009, we have found homes for 1890 animals.
That’s very impressive!
Well, down at the shelter, we’re all very proud of the work we’re doing. We hope to improve our services in the future and that’s why we need more people to join us!
This week, we speak to Raincy, a volunteer at the Love Animal Shelter.
