When was the last time you used a telephone box I mean to make an actual phone call — not to shelter from the rain. Ages ago, right The last time I used a phone box for its intended purpose was...2006. I was conducting auditions (试演) for my play in my tiny old shared house in London. Hoping to impress some talented actors to come and work for me for nothing, I spread some throws over the sofas and lit candles to make it seem a bit more "young professional".
As I rushed outdoors to empty the wastepaper baskets, the door swung shut behind me. Suddenly I was locked outside. My mobile phone was inside, but luckily there was a telephone box across the street. So, I called Directory Assistance, got put through to our landlady’s managing agent, and had a spare key sent to me with just enough time to get back in before the actors arrived.
As it has been many years since I last used one, I should hardly be surprised that there are no longer any public telephones near my house. The last one standing has just been turned into a "mini community library": any passer-by can "borrow" a book from its shelves return it later, or replace it with another title from their own collection.
For a few months after the "library" opened, I didn’t bother taking a look, as I had assumed that it would be stuffed full of cheese love stories. Then I noticed folk conducting spring cleans dropping boxes of voluminous books on various subjects there. And these books were free. This unbeatable price-point encouraged me to experiment with dozens of titles that I would never normally consider buying. And I’ve discovered some great books!
If I ever get trapped outside my house again, my local telephone box will, sadly no longer be able to connect me with my keys. But it can certainly keep me entertained while I wait for my wife to rescue me.
24.What does the underlined word "it" in the first paragraph refer to

A. It provides phone service for free.
B. Anyone can contribute to its collection.
C. It is popular among young readers.
D. Books must be returned within a month.
27.Why did the author start to use the "library"
A. He wanted to borrow some love stories.
B. He was encouraged by a close neighbour.
C. He found there were excellent free books.
D. He thought it was an ideal place for reading.

In Hangzhou’s Linping District, a friendly AI assistant named "Little Rainbow" is quietly changing how citizens interact with the government. Powered by DeepSeek-R1, an advanced Chinese AI model, this system handles over 1,000 daily inquiries — from explaining policies to guiding paperwork — with 95% accuracy.
Imagine needing to apply for a student scholarship but feeling lost in complicated rules. With "Little Rainbow", citizens simply ask questions in natural language, like chatting with a friend. The AI instantly analyzes policies, provides step-by-step guidance, and even fills out forms automatically. For elderly people unfamiliar with smartphones, it offers voice-based assistance, such as helping them manage health code systems during the pandemic. This "one-stop service" saves time and reduces confusion, making government services more accessible.
"Little Rainbow" relies on two key technologies: natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning. The NLP allows it to understand various questions-whether typed or spoken. Meanwhile, its machine learning algorithms (算法) improve through real-world interactions. For example, if a user asks, "How do I report a broken streetlight " the system not only answers but also learns to predict similar requests in the future.
To ensure reliability, engineers trained the AI using thousands of real cases, covering topics from tax payments to school admissions. Surprisingly, the system can even detect emotional tones in messages. When a user writes, "I’m frustrated with this process!", "Little Rainbow" responds with patience and extra clear explanations.
Hangzhou’s "Little Rainbow" is more than a convenience — it’s a window into an AI-driven world. As this technology spreads, it challenges us to adapt, innovate, and think critically about its impact. For young learners, understanding AI isn’t just about coding; it’s about shaping a future where technology serves humanity’s best interests.
28.What is "Little Rainbow"
A. An AI handling public inquiries. B. An AI replacing office workers.
C. A tool developing new algorithms. D. A tool analyzing user data trends.
29.How does "Little Rainbow" assist users who express frustration
A. By simplifying smartphone functions for the elderly.
B. By transferring them to human operators immediately.
C. By automatically completing forms without user input.
D. By recognizing emotions and offering clearer guidance.
30.What should we learn about AI
A. AI could replace human labor. B. Coding is essential.
C. Emotion detection matters most. D. Shape AI for human benefit.
31.What is the author’s attitude toward AI systems like "Little Rainbow"
A. Unclear. B. Approving. C. Doubtful. D. Critical.
D
Some people never read any books again and feel that since they already know the outcome, there is nothing to be gained by rereading. I have to dissent.
I am reminded of a professor in college, who always had us read our assignments twice. "The first time, read fast and for fun," he said. "The second time, look for delicate distinctions and small differences in meaning." His suggestion works great for me.
When I have a new book, I read fast, eager to discover the resolution. Then if I like the book, I will read it again. Not right away, but a few months later, possibly on a rainy Sunday afternoon, I will grab the book and settle down to discover the small details. I will read more slowly the second time, appreciating the descriptions and looking forward to my favorite sections, enjoying the anticipation. Knowing those favorite passages are coming does not spoil anything. I’m looking forward to revisiting those treasured places in the book. Knowing they are coming heightens my enjoyment.
Rereading a book gives me a chance to appreciate the small things an author integrates into her story. A turn of a character’s head, a thought in the night, a sigh, these are the things that give insights into a book and the characters. I love dissecting (剖析) a story the second time around, looking for clues that give the tale a deep meaning. Reading is like revisiting a friend, familiar, yet always with something more inside.
What have I been reading lately The Merlin Trilogy by Mary Stewart. These books rank among my all-time favorite rereads. Set in Britain in roughly the second half of the 5th century CE, they were Mary Stewart’s take on the familiar King Arthur stories. If you are unfamiliar with them, I highly recommend all three books, especially if you love fantasy and historical fiction.
32.What does the underlined word "descent" in paragraph 1 mean
A. Understand. B. Disagree. C. Complain. D. Discontinue.
33.According to the author’s professor, what should one do during the second reading
A. Look for assignment clues. B. Pay attention to the minor details.
C. Stick to the most interesting sections. D. Skip some parts to get to the end fast.
34.What does the author enjoy about rereading a book
A. Visiting the places mentioned in the book.
B. Discovering the resolution of the story quickly.
C. Finding out the lessons learned by the characters.
D. Appreciating the writer’s storytelling techniques.
35.What is The Merlin Trilogy
A. The author’s new favorites.
B. A series of science-fiction novels.
C. Books based on ancient British stories.
D. Mary Stewart’s successful adaptations.

In today’s world, where negativity often takes center stage, it’s easy to overlook the simple acts of kindness that can bring joy to someone’s life. I recently had a personal experience that reminded me of this during a particularly challenging week.
My week had been filled with problems, from work-related stress to unexpected bills and broken items. By the time I needed to go to the store for a few essentials, I was already feeling overwhelmed and at my breaking point. Despite my desire to just go home and relax, I made the trip across town to the store.
When I arrived, I found the parking lot packed, which only added to my frustration. To make matters worse, the person next to my intended parking spot seemed to think their small car was entitled (有资格) to take up two spaces. After finally finding a spot, I realized that I had left my purse, including my debit card (借记卡) and checkbook (支票簿), at home. Fortunately, I had a small amount of cash and my coupon (优惠券) book, so I decided to go inside and make the best of it.
The store was bustling with people, but I managed to find the items I needed and got in line to check out. However, the line seemed to move at a snail’s pace, and my patience was wearing thin. As I waited, I couldn’t help but feel my stress levels rising.
That’s when I noticed an old lady standing behind me in line. She seemed to sense my anxiety and cast a kind smile at me. I awkwardly returned the smile and continued to wait. After a seemingly endless wait, it was finally my turn to check out.

W: Right! That involved cooking a dish for the judges. We prepared our dishes in the kitchen of an actual restaurant.
M: Did everything go as planned
W: Not exactly! I was relieved to find no one was making dishes anything like mine. But as I was about to start cooking, I realized that the pizza stone I wanted to cook my pizza on was in the back of my mom’s car, and she’d gone home! Anyway, the oven did the job just as well. However, it was tense watching the judges taste the food. Their faces completely lacked expression so I had no idea whether they liked it or not. But they loved my dish and I won!
M: Congratulations!
17.答案:A
18.答案:C
19.答案:A
20.答案:C
解析:W: This is Ellen Coyle with Talk About the News. In today’s world, some might argue that it doesn’t really matter where you live. That’s not true, according to Richard Florida.
In his book Who’s Your City Richard Florida says the decision about where to live may be the most important one you make. Richard thinks that people tend to gather in certain cities according to the work they do and even the type of personalities they have. Some cities, such as Boston, lead the way in technology and innovation. New York and London are financial centers. Cities like Los Angeles make quality films. Others like Guadalajara are known mainly for producing various products. Why are some cities centers of creativity while others are more likely to focus on producing things Richard uses recent research to suggest that personality may play a role.
Cities like Boston are home to people who are open to experience. They like high levels of activity and new ideas. Most technology companies are in or near these centers of creativity. In cities like Guadalajara, residents are both hard-working and agreeable. They tend to follow rules and work well on teams, qualities that are important in manufacturing.
第二部分 阅读理解
第一节
A
21.答案:A
解析:细节理解题。根据Vienna部分中的"The greatest classical composers — from Mozart to Haydn to Beethoven to Mahler — all lived and worked in Vienna at one point or another.(最伟大的古典作曲家—从莫扎特到海顿,从贝多芬到马勒—都曾在维也纳生活和工作过。)"可知,许多伟大的古典音乐家曾在维也纳生活并工作,游客可通过游览该城市深入了解这些音乐家。故选A。
22.答案:B
解析:细节理解题。根据New York部分中的"New York has been described as a "melting pot(熔炉)" of cultures, and that applies to its music, too. (纽约被描述为文化的"大熔炉",这也适用于它的音乐。)"可知,纽约作为一个音乐城市,它是各种音乐风格的交汇点。故选B。
23.答案:C
解析:推理判断题。根据首段"Music is an international language spanning (跨越) cultures across the world, and, in fact, across time, Looking at today’s musical landscape, certain cities truly stand out for their music scenes. B
24.答案:B

故填in。

第四部分 写作
第一节
答案:
Dear fellow students,
With the rapid development of tourism and economy, our precious cultural heritage sites are facing increasing threats. To raise awareness and take action, we are launching the campaign "Please Protect the Heritage Sites!".
As members of the younger generation, we have a responsibility to protect these invaluable treasures that carry centuries of history and culture. We should always follow site regulations, refrain from touching artifacts or writing on walls, and dispose of waste properly. When we’re visiting these sites, choosing environmentally friendly transportation can significantly reduce our impact. Moreover, we should actively share the importance of preservation with those around us.
Let’s unite in this meaningful cause! Together, we can ensure these magnificent sites continue to inspire future generations.

第二节
答案:
However, what happened next was out of my expectation. As the cashier scanned my items, I discovered that the total cost exceeded the amount of cash I had on hand. Embarrassment and confusion filled me as I attempted to explain my situation to the cashier, who seemed increasingly frustrated. Meanwhile, the patience of the people waiting behind me in line began to wear thin. Just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse, a sense of hopelessness began to set in, and I contemplated having to return home to retrieve more money.
As I was about to return for more cash, I suddenly felt a tap on my shoulder. It was the elderly woman who had been standing behind me in line. With a warm smile, she handed me some money and reassuringly said, "Don’t worry, dear. We all have tough days." Her kindness deeply touched me, and I thanked her with all the sincerity I could muster before paying for my items. As I left the store, I felt a profound sense of gratitude and realized that even the smallest acts of kindness can have a significant impact on someone’s day. This simple gesture of goodwill truly brightened my spirits, and it inspired me to pay it forward by helping others whenever I can.
