There is an interesting part of your body. It is always dying, and it is replaced (代替) every 28 days. Everywhere you go, you leave tiny pieces of it on the ground or the floor. It is the largest part of your body. It is your skin.
When we think of parts of the human body, we usually think of the heart or the brain. But the skin is also a part of your body. In fact, it makes up about 15% of your body weight and covers an area of about two square meters.
The skin is always replacing itself. Dead skin cells (细胞) are always falling off your body. In fact, scientists say that half of the dirt in your house is made up of dead skin. But your skin does not just make you look pretty or old. It does some very important things.
The skin protects your body. Your skin is a covering for the inside parts. It also works hard to keep your body warm or cool. Tiny holes in the skin can open or close to help control body heat.
Your skin is also a “feeler” for your body. It feels touch or pain. Parts of cells that feel touch are connected to the brain. When you touch something, your brain decides what to do and then tells your muscles (肌肉). But the parts that feel pain are connected straight to muscles. If these feel sudden pain, they tell the muscles to move quickly. The muscles don’t need the brain to tell them to jump.
Because of all the things the skin does, it truly is an amazing part of your body.
9. The author thinks the largest part of your body is ________.
A. brain B. heart C. hand D. skin
10. How can you find the skin replaces itself
A. By making you look pretty old. B. By seeing dead cells that fall off.
C. By cleaning the dirt in the house. D. By watching tiny holes in the skin.
11. Which parts of cells are connected straight to muscles
A. The parts that feel pain. B. The parts that feel cool.
C. The parts that feel warm. D. The parts that feel touch.
12. What’s the writer’s purpose in writing the text
A. To describe parts of our body. B. To tell us about dead skin cells.
C. To introduce the amazing skin. D. To advise us to protect our skin.
D
“The red walls and green tiles (瓦) set each other off beautifully. It’s so Beijing,” said a 33-year-old Beijing person with the family name of Lin.
Lin and her 14-year-old cousin were enjoying a city walk along the Beijing Central Axis (中轴线). On this walk, they saw most of the old city buildings of Beijing like the Forbidden City and the Bell and Drum towers. Since the show Glory Is Back! Beijing (《登场了!北京中轴线》) was shown in July, more and more people have become interested in the Central Axis. Some even travel by foot to know it better themselves.
Dating back to the Yuan Dynasty (元朝,1271—1368), the 7.8-kilometer-long Beijing Central Axis joined royal palaces (皇家宫殿) and marketplaces for common people in the past. Though time changes many things, the Central Axis has left a special feeling with many Chinese people.
When people walk around the Bell and Drum towers, they can find peace in the busy city life.
At a square between the Bell Tower and the Drum Tower, you can see people relaxing, cycling and playing games and even celebrating life events.
This was one of our favorite meeting places when we went on dates. “You could say that the towers have seen our love grow,” said a young couple who were taking wedding (结婚) photos under the Bell and Drum towers.
A number of visitors from other parts of the world have been amazed by the Beijing Central Axis.

I grew up in the countryside. I didn’t understand what it brought to me until I became an adult. It helped me learn more practical skills than my peers (同龄人) who grew up in cities.
I learned to cook at the age of 10. The first skill I learned was making dough (面团). In my hometown of Ningxia, people make noodles from the start of the evening. Since my parents often came home late, a prepared dough would help my family have dinner sooner. I thought it would he easy because I often saw my mom do it-just mix water and flour (面粉), right Not quite! It was a mess for a while. At the beginning, I made the dough too soft. Then, I made it too hard. But as I kept trying, I learned the trick (窍门).
Later, I cooked fried dishes and things like dumplings. I fell in love with cooking. It’s a good way to relax. Thanks to my cooking skills, I live a better life when I need to work from home. I cook every meal instead of ordering delivery (外卖). It saves money, and I don’t have to wait for delivery drivers to bring me food.
This may be why I’m so happy to know that students now have labor (劳动) education at school in China. These practical skills will help them for the rest of their lives.

Dear David,
Long time no see! Recently I have read an article about natural disasters. And I want to share my thoughts with you.
The disaster I fear most is earthquakes. They happen suddenly without warning, and buildings may collapse within seconds. Last year, I watched a documentary about the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, and it shocked me deeply. People lost their homes, families, and even lives in just a few minutes. Unlike floods or storms, earthquakes give almost no time to escape, which makes them especially terrifying.
What about you Which natural disaster scares you the most Looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Li Hui
