In the lovely town of Elmwood, the local library was a magical place. It held countless interesting books and
was dear to everyone. Young children were fascinated by the stories, students used it as a quiet study spot, and
adults enjoyed chatting in book clubs. But one day, the town council announced budget cuts, and the library might
close.
Sixteen-year-old Emily led a group of brave teenagers to save it. They started the “Save Our Stories” plan.
“The library is where I made so many great memories. We can’t let it shut down,” Emily said.
The teens organized a book-reading marathon. High school students took turns reading for 24 hours! Families
brought picnic baskets and sat on the lawn, listening to stories. Local shops donated food and drinks. They also
created an online petition (请愿书). After months of hard work, they succeeded! The library got enough money to
stay open and even added a new section for young adults.
After saving the library, Elmwood became more in love with books. They started an annual Literary Festival,
which now attracts people from far away.
The festival begins with a big parade. Schools make floats based on famous books, like a Hogwarts float from
“Harry Potter”. Famous writers come to share their stories, and there are writing workshops. The “Street of Stories”
is popular: artists paint book scenes on storefronts, actors dress as book characters, and volunteers act out story
parts on small stages.
This love for literature has changed young people. Jake, who once disliked studying, found his love for
reading and writing while helping save the library. Now he plans to study English literature in college.
Emily says, “This experience made us more confident. Books have brought our town closer together.” In

People are different, but they all have the same needs. Needs are things people must have to live. Our bodies
need food and water. We also need air to breathe. We need a place to live to keep us safe. We need clothes to keep
us warm. If we did not have these things, we could not survive (生存).
Needs may be different for people who live in different areas. If you live where it is cold, you may need
special clothes to keep you warm. If you live where it is hot, you may need more water.

by hand. They used to pick plants by hand. Now they have machines that do this work.
● Our Wants
Wants are things people would like to have but do not need to live. Suppose you hope to get a football for your
birthday. A football is a want. You can live without it.
Sometimes we might want something so much that it feels like a need. We have to make choices, though. If
you need a new coat for winter, you might not be able to get the football you want. We must choose what we need
over what we want.
Sometimes we must make choices between things we want. Suppose you want to go to a birthday party for
your uncle. That day, a friend asks you to go to a movie. The movie is at the same time as the party.
If you choose to go to the party, then what would you give up What would you give up if you went to the
