Fourteen-year-old Akram used to spend a boring hour waiting at a bus stop after school each day. Teachers
were preparing for the next day in the classrooms, but students weren’t allowed in. Akram thought it was such a

Everybody knows how important it is for students to get a good night’s sleep every night. You aren’t able to
do your best and keep up with all of your responsibilities unless you sleep well. I’m sure you already know that
you should go to bed at a reasonable hour. Most experts agree that the best number of hours is eight, and this has
been accepted as common sense for as long as I can remember. Nowadays, experts at the National Sleep
Foundation suggest that people sleep between seven and nine hours each night. However, I was young once and I
know that most of you get much less sleep than that—and in some cases it will be influencing your schoolwork.
I read an interesting article in a teachers’ magazine recently. They did a study of 848 students in Wales.
Worryingly, the results showed that teenagers are facing a new problem. They may go to bed and get up at proper
times but a growing number are waking up in the middle of the night, not to use the bathroom or have a snack but
because of a new phenomenon (现象): FOMO—fear of missing out!
According to the article, schoolchildren are painful because of a growing trend (趋势) to wake up during
the night to check social media. Afraid of missing a comment (评论) or opportunity to take part in a conversation,
teenagers are waking at all times of the night, going online and getting involved. They are always eager to interact
(互动) with others.
Experts are worried about this growing trend and the report shows some worrying statistics (统计数据) that
I’d like to share with you:
23% of 12 to 15-year-olds wake up nearly every night to use social media. Another 15% wake up at night
once a week for the same reason.
One in three students are always tired and unable to provide their best effort.
Students who use social media during the night are more likely to have both depression (抑郁) and anxiety.
So, I’d like to ask you to be responsible when it comes to social media. Be brave! Switch off your devices

Some parents and some students feel that the study of English literature is misguided and disadvantageous
to students, particularly if they are second language learners of English. However, there are still good reasons for
the study of English literature.
Students of English language sometimes fail to see the point of studying English literature, especially if
they have no plans to study English or translation at university. But English literature can introduce students to
many aspects (方面), not only the English language but also the culture of English-speaking countries.
There are aspects of English culture that are summarized by English literature. Of course, this is quite
evident (明显的) when we are studying the works of Shakespeare or of writers, however, also true when we are
studying other works of English literature. Students can learn about good stories and references to different
aspects of English culture. They can also learn the context (背景) and meaning of famous quotes and phrases.

to literature in other contexts, such as American literature. The enjoyment and appreciation of literature will give
students the ability to develop this into an interest in books and reading as they move away from their studies and
into the adult lives. They will have the confidence to approach and deal with new forms of books and writing.
When studying literature, students can learn not only language aspects such as vocabulary but also the
language aspects which can be used for specific purposes. For example, if the students are familiar with the
concepts of the beat and rhythm of English poems, they can improve their own writing as they are able to
appreciate and apply these ideas.
Finally, the study of literature can provide students with a fresh and creative angle, from which the students
can deal with their studies in particular and their lives in general. So the next time you are reading a newspaper
article complaining of the lack of creativity and initiative (主动性), remember that in a small way the study of
English literature can help to add a refreshing and further dimension to a person’s life.

Recycling is good for the environment. It can also benefit a community in surprising ways. Mateo Lange,
15, knows this well. On weekends, you’ll find him sorting through glass and plastic bottles and drink cans in his
hometown of Indian River, Michigan, where he leads a community recycling program.
Mateo started the program in 2020. He was playing baseball with the Northern Michigan Cyclones at that
time. The team was new and needed money to travel to tournaments (联赛). Mateo came up with a plan.
“There were cans and bottles always thrown around the road,” he tells TIME for Kids. In Michigan, these
can be collected and sold for cash. With his dad’s help, Mateo started a bottle and can drive. It raised $7,500. “We
built up so much money in just a few weeks,” he says.
Since then, Mateo says, his recycling effort has raised $350,000 and helped at least 50 local youth groups.
It has also prevented more than 2 million bottles and cans from littering the roadside and polluting Michigan’s
lakes and rivers.
Cash for Trash
Michigan has developed return programs to help stores get the empty bottles and cans back for recycling so
as to reduce litter and protect the environment. But the return program stopped during the COVID-19 pandemic
(疫情). “All these big stores weren’t letting people bring their bottles and cans back,” Mateo says. “People just
had to put them in their garage (车库).” His bottle and can drive gave people a way to solve the problem. They
drove his grandpa’s truck to collect the bottles and cans and then sort them.
Helping Hands
In 2023, Mateo was awarded (奖励) a Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. The award honors kids and
teens who are working to help others and protect Planet Earth.
When asked about all he’s achieved with his cleanup effort. Mateo says, “I am happy knowing that all these
teams and clubs and kids around the community are benefiting.” Mateo believes everyone can—and should—be
of service. “Just do a little bit to help make the world a little bit of a better place,” he says.

FOMO
Everybody knows how important it is for students to get a good night’s sleep every night. You aren’t able to
do your best and keep up with all of your responsibilities unless you sleep well. I’m sure you already know that
you should go to bed at a reasonable hour. Most experts agree that the best number of hours is eight, and this has
been accepted as common sense for as long as I can remember. Nowadays, experts at the National Sleep
Foundation suggest that people sleep between seven and nine hours each night. However, I was young once and I
know that most of you get much less sleep than that—and in some cases it will be influencing your schoolwork.
I read an interesting article in a teachers’ magazine recently. They did a study of 848 students in Wales.
Worryingly, the results showed that teenagers are facing a new problem. They may go to bed and get up at proper
times but a growing number are waking up in the middle of the night, not to use the bathroom or have a snack but
because of a new phenomenon (现象): FOMO—fear of missing out!
According to the article, schoolchildren are painful because of a growing trend (趋势) to wake up during

Some parents and some students feel that the study of English literature is misguided and disadvantageous
to students, particularly if they are second language learners of English. However, there are still good reasons for
the study of English literature.
Students of English language sometimes fail to see the point of studying English literature, especially if
they have no plans to study English or translation at university. But English literature can introduce students to
many aspects (方面), not only the English language but also the culture of English-speaking countries.
There are aspects of English culture that are summarized by English literature. Of course, this is quite

Recycling is good for the environment. It can also benefit a community in surprising ways. Mateo Lange,
15, knows this well. On weekends, you’ll find him sorting through glass and plastic bottles and drink cans in his
hometown of Indian River, Michigan, where he leads a community recycling program.
Mateo started the program in 2020. He was playing baseball with the Northern Michigan Cyclones at that
time. The team was new and needed money to travel to tournaments (联赛). Mateo came up with a plan.
“There were cans and bottles always thrown around the road,” he tells TIME for Kids. In Michigan, these
can be collected and sold for cash. With his dad’s help, Mateo started a bottle and can drive. It raised $7,500. “We
built up so much money in just a few weeks,” he says.
Since then, Mateo says, his recycling effort has raised $350,000 and helped at least 50 local youth groups.
It has also prevented more than 2 million bottles and cans from littering the roadside and polluting Michigan’s
lakes and rivers.
Cash for Trash
Michigan has developed return programs to help stores get the empty bottles and cans back for recycling so
as to reduce litter and protect the environment. But the return program stopped during the COVID-19 pandemic
(疫情). “All these big stores weren’t letting people bring their bottles and cans back,” Mateo says. “People just
had to put them in their garage (车库).” His bottle and can drive gave people a way to solve the problem. They
drove his grandpa’s truck to collect the bottles and cans and then sort them.
Helping Hands
In 2023, Mateo was awarded (奖励) a Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes. The award honors kids and
teens who are working to help others and protect Planet Earth.
When asked about all he’s achieved with his cleanup effort. Mateo says, “I am happy knowing that all these
teams and clubs and kids around the community are benefiting.” Mateo believes everyone can—and should—be
