Our science class was always full of fun things to do, but this project was different. When I was 13, my science teacher, Mr. Thompson, gave us a ____15____ project. “Watch one tree for a month and write about it,” he said. There were several trees behind our building, right away, I noticed the sad-looking maple tree. Its branches were mostly bare (光秃的), with only one red leaf ____16____ a little in the cool autumn wind. It seemed to be holding on to life.
Every single afternoon, I ____17____ set up my painting stand and got my drawing book ready. I really wanted to draw all the small changes of that leaf. Day by day, I saw its ____18____ red color slowly become lighter. The sides of the leaf started to curl, showing it was dying. On the twelfth day, a big rainstorm hit the city. Worried, I ran to check on “my” tree. I was so ____19____ when I saw the leaf was gone. I almost gave up on the project.
But just as I was about to leave, I saw something truly great. Three tiny buds (芽) had grown where the old leaf used to be. They were small and weak, but they still brought ____20____. Mr. Donovan, the kind park gardener, saw my surprised look. “Leaves don’t really die, ____21____, they fall to feed the earth, so new life may rise when spring comes,” he said softly and put an acorn (橡子) in my hand. His words helped me get through the long, cold winter. I spent the ____22____ of the season writing down all the interesting things about the tree. I saw its rough bark (树皮) give a home to many insects, and ____23____ squirrels ran around, hiding nuts under the tree.
When spring came, I saw a beautiful sight. New leaves grew on the maple tree and from the acorn I planted. Years later, when I ____24____ the national science competition, I thought of the tree. It made me realize that true strength lies in rising after every fall, just like the maple tree.

How to bank a seed!
Scientists are working to save world’s plants from dying out. Storing a seed correctly can make its life longer by hundreds of years. Just like a regular bank, a seed bank is a safe place to save for the future. But this special vault (保险库) keeps seeds, not money! Find out how the scientists do it... 1. Collection Successful seed banking starts with collecting! Along with the seeds, scientists must gather information about the plants’ location and time of year they were gathered. 2. Drying out The drying room is a lot less humid (湿热的) than a regular room. Depending on a seed’s size, it’ll stay there for between two weeks and six months, slowly drying out. 3. Clean up & X-rays They are either cleaned by hand or with a machine that removes dirt and damaged (被损坏的) seeds. Then, an X-ray machine examines a sample of the seeds to check what percentage of them are damaged, empty or have bugs inside! 4. Into the vault It’s now time for most of the seeds to go into the vault! They’re stored in air-tight containers at -20℃ in underground rooms. If all goes to plan, they should survive for hundreds of years. 5. Testing time After a few months, a sample will be tested to see if they’ve survived. Scientists take a careful note of the best ways to germinate (发芽) each seed so that they can be grown successfully by scientists of the future. 6. The nursery Once the sample seeds have germinated and flowered, it will be used to confirm whether the seed was labelled correctly in step one. If it is right, the seeds can be used for important scientific projects.

“That’s strange,” thought Mom, peering into the cookie jar. “It’s empty.”
She turned it upside down, just to make sure.
“I’m sure that I filled it up yesterday,” she thought. “Dad and Harry can’t have eaten them all!”
Mom looked around the kitchen. Everything else seemed to be in the right place. She looked in all the cabinets. She searched on all the shelves. She looked in the refrigerator. She looked in the dog’s bowl. But she couldn’t find the missing cookies anywhere.
When Harry got home from school, Mom was waiting with the cookie jar.
“Anything to tell me ” she asked, pointing to the empty jar.
“Maybe you left them somewhere, Mom,” said Harry. “I mean, you do, um, lose things sometimes.”
Mom tried again when Dad got home.
“They are probably in the dog,” said Dad. “He always looks hungry.”
Suddenly, Harry rushed up to his room. When he came back, he was holding a magnifying glass and a large notebook.
“Don’t worry, Mom,” he said. “Detective Harry and his dog are here to solve the mystery of the missing cookies.”
“Humph,” said Dad. “I bet that means you’ll want a reward.”
Harry began searching for clues. He didn’t have to look very hard. He found cookie crumbs on the hall carpet and on the kitchen floor. There were even cookie crumbs on the dog.
“I wonder what that’s doing there ” said Harry, picking up a half-eaten cookie from Dad’s bedside table.
Next, Harry decided to interview the chief suspects.
“Mom,” he said. “How many cookies have you had today ”
“Um, none,” said Mom. “That’s the problem.”
“Dad,” said Harry. “Can you explain what this cookie was doing in your bedroom ”
“I have no idea,” said Dad. “It is because of that dog. Ask him.”
That night, after Mom and Dad had gone to bed, Harry quietly went downstairs and set up a clever trap for the cookie thief. He put new cookies in the jar and left it on the kitchen table. Then he tied a long piece of string around the jar. He tied the other end around his finger. Finally, Harry went into the family room next door, settled down on the sofa, and fell fast asleep.
A few hours later Harry felt a tug on his finger. He secretly went into the kitchen. A dark figure was munching a cookie. The cookie thief was…
“Got you!” said Harry. But Dad didn’t seem to hear him. He was still fast asleep.
“I had a funny dream last night,” said Dad, the next morning. Mom and Harry said nothing. They just looked at each other and smiled.

C. The dog once stole some food. D. The dog was seen eating a cookie.
32. What happened after Harry set up the trap

C. He slept on the sofa waiting for the thief. D. Dad woke up and ate the cookies openly.

A. Mom’s Empty Jar B. An Excellent Detective Harry
C Dad’s Funny Dream D. An Unexpected Cookie Thief

What man-made objects in China can be seen from space They don’t include the Great Wall of course, which is mostly no wider than a country road; but surely include the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces (红河哈尼梯田).
Hacked (开辟) from mountains in Yunnan province, the terraces spread over more than 160 square kilometers to create one of the most amazing landscapes on the planet.
“Since ancient times the local Hani people have built ditches (沟渠) to pass spring water from mountains and forests to water terraced fields,” said a local guide. “The number of ditches required has been huge. It needs a great deal of manpower.”
It is believed that the Hani people arrived in the Ailao Mountains around the third century, having moved south from the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau (高地). They were so impressed by what they found there—rich land, mild climate, plentiful rainfall—they chose to put down roots.
Hani farmers began carving the terraces by hand during the Tang Dynasty. Some are as big as football fields, and others no larger than a bed. The terraces climb from 500 meters to 1,800 meters above sea level. They’re “stairways to heaven”.
However, the Hani’s engineered wonder remained largely hidden from the rest of the world for centuries. Nobody paid much attention to them until the 2000s. The local government managed to get them highlighted on UNESCO’s World Heritage (遗产) List in 2013.
Though the terraces shine with bright green in the summer growing season, the landscape is at its most photogenic (上镜的) from November to late April, when the waterlogged terraces become natural mirrors that reflect (折射) every sunrise and sunset, with farmers and water buffalo (水牛) walking by from time to time.
34. The Honghe Hani Rice Terraces ________.
A. were built with the help of the local government
B. are the only man-made object that can be seen from space
C. were carved by Hani farmers on the Qinghai-Xizang plateau
D. were created to bring water down from the forests to the farmland
35 When does the Hani Rice Terraces look the most beautiful in photographs
A. In winter. B. From autumn to spring.
C. In late spring. D. During the summer growing season.
36. Why didn’t the Hani Rice Terraces come to light until the 2000s
A. Because the government didn’t support it.
B. Because people couldn’t get there easily.
C. Because there were not enough reports about them.
D. Because the local people were unwilling to be discovered.
37 What may be the writer’s attitude (态度) towards the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces
①A place worth visiting and enjoying. ②One common nice tourist attraction in China.
③An amazing man-made wonder. ④ A site showing Chinese people’s greatness.
⑤A useful area full of history and wisdom. ⑥ A wonderful place not known by the world.
A. ①②③④ B. ①③④⑤ C. ②③④⑥ D. ②④⑤⑥

六、阅读回答问题(本大题共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
阅读下面的短文,然后根据短文内容回答问题,每题答案不超过9个单词。
It is easy for many people to catch a cold in spring or fall. It makes us wonder since scientists can send a man to the moon, why they can’t find a cure for common colds. The answer is easy—there are many different cold viruses. You never know which one you will get, so there isn’t a cure for each one.
When a virus gets into your body, your body works hard to fight against it. Blood rushes to your nose and causes a block in it, so you feel terrible because you can’t breathe well, but your body is actually eating the virus. Your temperature goes up and you get a fever, but the heat of your body is killing the virus. You also have a runny nose to stop the virus from getting into your cells. You may feel very uncomfortable, but actually your wonderful body is doing everything it can to kill the cold.
Different people do different things to deal with colds. Some people might have chicken soup to help them get over the cold and some take medicine to stop different symptoms (症状) of colds.
There is one interesting thing to note—some scientists say taking medicine when you have a cold is actually bad for you. The virus stays in you longer because your body doesn’t have a way to fight it and kill it. Bodies can do an amazing job on their own. There is a joke, however, on taking medicine when you have a cold. It goes like this: It takes about one week to get over a cold if you don’t take medicine, but it takes only about seven days to get over a cold if you take medicine.

I am Li Hua from Class 1, Grade 9. I recommend a paper-cutting workshop. Participants can learn to create traditional patterns like flowers or animals with scissors and red paper. Teachers will demonstrate basic skills and guide students to design their own works.
This activity is ideal for two reasons. First, paper-cutting is a vivid symbol of Chinese culture, with history over 1,500 years. It allows foreign students to experience the beauty of Chinese folk art up close. Second, it’s a hands-on activity, encouraging creativity and interaction. Students can take their works home as souvenirs, spreading Chinese culture beyond the show. Such an activity combines education and fun, making it a great choice for the folk art show.
I hope my idea can be considered. Thanks.
