That day, I was invited to be a judge of a competition at a college. All of the students had been given a
piece of paper with a topic on it.
The first one to speak looked a little uneasy. “My dear friends and judges,” he said loudly, “this is an unfair
competition.”
“I have been given the paper,” he continued, “to speak on the topic with just a few minutes’ preparation,
while those who come after me have more time to prepare their speeches!”
We were shocked at these words but could do nothing for this. He then left the stage and went out of the
hall.
Several days later, I met him in parking lot by chance. “Who said life is fair ” I asked him, with a smile. He
was confused.
Then I pointed to the cars around, “Do you know anything about cars When new car is introduced into the
market, you might hear some nice figures (数字) from the car salesmen. But in fact, your car never works so well
as described—because the figures are shown just to say how good a car is.”
“Yes.” he nodded.
“And if you ask the salesmen more about these figures, they will say all the figures are just in ideal road
conditions!”
“Yes.” he said again.
“Can you find ideal road conditions in real life ” I asked him. He shook his head. “So that’s it. A car will
sell well and become the real winner just because it can provide strong power and smooth speed on the worst
roads.”
“Don’t look for ideal competition conditions. And don’t always think about the fairness!” I told him, “Just
fight the unfair and come out a real winner!” Then I got into my car.
When I started it and looked back, I noticed he smiled and waved to me. I believed that he knew what he
should do in the future.
19.The student thought the competition was unfair perhaps because ________.
A.he should write the topic first B.he was the last one to get the paper
C.he wasn’t good at the topic he picked D.he didn’t have enough time to prepare as others
20.What can we know about the figures
A.People should read them carefully. B.They could hardly be realized in real life.
C.They are always shown on the worst roads. D.Only the most expensive car can reach them.
21.The author gave the example of the figures in order to ________.
A.tell the student that life is not always fair B.show the student how to sell more cars
C.teach the student how to choose a good car D.describe why his car was in good condition
22.What can we infer from the passage
A.The author was a professional car salesman.
B.The best car provides less power but higher speed.
C.One should try his best to win no matter what condition he is in.
D.The author didn’t feel surprised when he heard the student’s speech.

During the Spring Festival, Liu Huimin and other craftsmen (工匠) set up a furnace (熔炉) and inside it,
there is liquid (液体) iron. When the furnace is red-hot, the craftsmen scoop (用勺儿舀) up the molten (熔化的)
iron and hit it hard with a board. The sparks scatter (分 散 ) everywhere. It’s called Datiehua in Chinese, a
traditional folk art in China.
It is popular in Henan and Shanxi provinces. It first appeared in the Northern Song Dynasty (960—1127),
and it became popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Inspired by the process of forging (锻造) iron, the
blacksmiths splash the molten iron onto the brick walls of a castle. The sparks are just like fireworks. The
performance is a way of praying for good luck and avoiding misfortune.
When villagers open a business or get married, they invite Liu and his team to spray (喷洒) the molten iron
for the celebration.
“In the past, rich people set off fireworks, while poor people had to spray the molten iron instead. My
family couldn’t afford the fireworks. So my grandfather used a stove and a blower to spray the molten iron for us,”
Liu said.
According to Liu, the furnace should be preheated for nearly 40 minutes, and the internal temperature
should be higher than 1,500℃. Only in this way can the liquid iron be fine and smooth for the amazing sparks.
On the day of the performance, the craftsmen put iron pieces into the furnace. It warms up the cold air of
early spring. When the night falls, the performance begins. Using a big ladle, a man throws the molten iron into
the sky before hitting it with a board soaked (浸泡) in cold water,
Bang! The red-hot molten iron explodes into dazzling sparks. Shining stars are all over the sky, covering
the performer like a golden umbrella. The show is quite wonderful against the night sky, and it is in some ways
better than real fireworks.
With the shower of sparks, the whole village is lit under the red sky at night, being a sign of a rich and
successful life in the future. People sit around the furnace, smiling with satisfaction and. Happiness on their faces.
23.Which of the following is TRUE about Datiehua
A.Datiehua came out about 2,000 years ago.

On December 29, 2024, two samples of the CR450 high-speed train were shown in Beijing. This wonderful
train can reach a test speed of 450 kilometers per hour and an operating speed of 400 km/h. When it starts to be
used for business, it will be the quickest high-speed train in the world, much faster than the CR400 that runs at
350 km/h.
The China State Railway Group, which made this train, said that the CR450 has set new global standards in
many important parts like speed, using less energy, making less noise, and braking performance (制动性能). Even
though it goes at a higher speed, its braking is as good as the 350 km/h trains. This is because of the great
engineering work that keeps the train steady and safe even when it’s fast.
The CR450 also cares a lot about making passengers feel comfortable. By using good noise-cutting
technology, the inside of the train is as quiet as the 350 km/h trains. Also, What’s more, its running resistance (阻
力) has been decreased by 22 percent and its weight has been reduced by 10 percent, which helps to save energy.
The inside has been made again, with 4 percent more room, and there are better places to put luggage.
Two samples were shown on that day. They were made by different companies, but both want to give
passengers a nice trip. The China State Railway Group will do more tests to make sure the train is okay for
business use.
Since 2012, China’s railway has made many new things, like the Fuxing high-speed train, and has built a
whole high-speed rail technology system. The CR450 shows China’s ability to make new things and its science
power. It also shows the good points of China’s system, which helps the railway grow.
In the past 15 years, China has built a very big railway network, including the world’s largest and best
high-speed rail network, which is very long. The CR450 is an important step in China’s railway growth.
27.We can infer from the passage that the CR450 ________.
A.costs more than the CR400 B.is more popular than the CR400
C.is safer than the CR400 D.has more seats than the CR400
28.Which of the following is NOT mentioned about the CR450
A.Its braking performance. B.Its ticket price. C.Its energy saving. D.Its noise reduction.
29.Why is the carriages (车厢) of the CR450 high-speed train quieter than that of the 350 km/h trains
A.Because it travels at a higher speed.
B.Because it uses advanced noise-reducing technology.
C.Because it is lighter.
D.Because it has less running resistance.
30.What is the main idea of the passage
A.The introduction of the CR450 high-speed train.
B.The history of China’s high-speed rail.
C.The comparison between the CR450 and other trains.
D.The future of China’s railway.

Paul McCartney is a famous rock star and song writer. He was born in England in 1942. He wrote most of
the music for the band Beatles. Let It Be is one of his most popular songs and it’s also the most famous song in
history. Many of us may remember some of its lines, but few of us understand their true meanings. In fact, he
wrote this song to remember his mother.
Paul McCartney used to have problems with math in his primary school days. Every time he looked
worried, his mother, Mary, always came to him and said, “Let it be.” Mary wanted him not to worry about his
trouble. She wanted him to face the music and feel more comfortable about solving his problems.

A.Because it travels at a higher speed.
B.Because it uses advanced noise-reducing technology.
C.Because it is lighter.
D.Because it has less running resistance.
30.What is the main idea of the passage
A.The introduction of the CR450 high-speed train.

【答案】例文
How to Make Full Use of the 15-minute Break
A well-planned break can refresh both our body and mind. Here are some practical suggestions.
First, take a short rest. Long hours of studying strain our eyes and brains. Closing eyes for 2-3 minutes or
enjoying the green view outside the window can relax our eyes and clear our minds, helping us focus better in the
next class.
Second, do light activities. A short walk in the corridor or simple stretches can energize our bodies.
Chatting with classmates about fun topics is also a great way to relieve stress.
Third, prepare for the next class. Spend 3-5 minutes reviewing the textbook and organizing stationery like
pens and notebooks. This simple step ensures we start the next lesson calmly and avoid last-minute rush.
By balancing rest, activity, and preparation, the 15-minute break becomes a perfect chance to recharge. It
boosts study efficiency and helps form healthy habits. Let’s make every break meaningful!
