It was September 2007. I was a new Grade Seven student. I was all alone reading books during the breaks while my classmates were busy making new friends. I was doing well until (直到) the third lesson on the first day.
The teacher had us finish a questionnaire with “get to know you” questions. I thought she would read them herself after class, so I felt safe to write about who I was. But after getting the sheets, she mixed (混合) them up and handed them out to the class. One by one, we read out the student’s name and then our two favorite answers. My sheet went to an unfriendly kid.
The first question was “What’s your favorite movie ” While other kids wrote popular Disney movies, my answer was “The Wizard of Oz (《绿野仙踪》), a film made in 1939.” The next question was “Where would you like to travel ” The others said “Australia” or “France”; I wrote, “Wherever a good book takes me.” A loud laugh came out.
My face was on fire. I wish I could hide inside my school bag! But I didn’t know what to do.
But then, a voice from the back of the room said. “Guys, stop!” It was Michael Siever, a popular boy. The room went silent.
Michael then turned to the teacher and said, “There’s no need of doing this activity if we make fun of each other.”
Fifteen years have passed since then. I don’t remember the names of most people in that class. But Michael and I still chat with each other on the phone from time to time. He is not only a friend of mine but also a hero.

Jenny finished playing the last few pieces of music and bowed to the animals on her bed. “I just hope I can play it well at the concert”. In just an hour she would be playing the violin onstage for the first time, and the thought made her nervous.
She looked around the room at the bear, lion, money and other animals that lined her bed and shelves. “I wish you could all come with me,” she sighed. She gave them one last look and went to join her parents in the car.
“Do I have to play in the concert ” asked Jenny as she climbed into the back seat.
“Is my favorite first-grader getting nervous ” her dad asked, smiling.
Jenny didn’t answer. She was trying to picture what it would be like to play in front of those people.
“You will be fine. The first time is always the hardest. ” said Mom.
When they arrived, Jenny headed backstage. She could see that all the seats were filled, with many people standing in back.
Nervously she sat with the other students onstage. She held her breath as the curtains started to open and her teacher picked up the microphone to begin the program. One by one the students played their pieces of music. Finally Jenny heard the teacher announced, “Our last student tonight will be Jenny, who will play Bach’s Minuet in G Major.”

As she played, she looked out at the audience and some of the animals changed into people. But she was not nervous any more. The audience looked friendly now.

Three hours,18 km, a climbing height of 400 meters, this is what I remember from my first time of cycling in a mountain area.

He told us some members once hurt their legs because they were not careful enough.
The first two kilometers was on a smooth road through the village, it was easy, but when we rode into the mountains, the hike became heavy and difficult to go. Stones and sand made my hike go like a rabbit. After 10 minutes I was out of breath, and I want to stop, but the coach asked me to go on.
It was even harder and sometimes a little dangerous when we got down the mountain. When I returned to the club, I lay down on the ground and couldn’t move. I thought I would never want to try the sport again, but the next day I did my best and improved myself. I was very happy.

Lucy was excited and a little nervous. Today was the day of her first soccer game. She put on her blue and white uniform, laced up her new cleats (防滑鞋), and tied her brown hair back into a ponytail (马尾辫). Her heart was racing as she stepped onto the grassy field.
The referee blew the whistle, and the game began. Lucy tried to remember all the things she learned at practice. She ran fast, kept her eye on the ball, and passed it to her teammates. There was a time when I had to count every penny (便士) I spent. I had to count the cost in my head while shopping. I would stand there and add up each item (物品) over and over. I remember one Christmas Eve when I was shopping at Trader Joe’s. I stood by the fridges and counted up the cost of the items I wanted to buy.
The total (总价) was too high and I couldn’t buy everything. I looked through each item, trying to decide what to put back. I kept everything that everyone else in my family loved but had to give up the one thing I loved—a bag of chicken tamales (鸡肉玉米粽). That bag pushed the total over budget. I hated the feeling of not being able to pay for it but life was hard at the time.
That night, the doorbell rang. It was strange because it was very cold and late. I went to the door, opened it, and found bags of food on my front steps. Nobody was there. On the top of the first bag, I saw the bag of chicken tamales, the same kind I had put back hours before.
I cannot describe the feeling of learning that even at my loneliest, I wasn’t alone. The feeling that I mattered, and the thankfulness I felt.

She put her violin under her chin, but she couldn’t remember even her first note(音符). Her eyes were filled with tears. She closed them, hoping to hold back the tears. Strangely, it looked as if all the people had changed into animals. She could see the Leopard, Giraffe and Zebra. She felt like laughing. More relaxed, she remembered her piece. As she played, she looked out at the audience and some of the animals changed into people. But she was not nervous any more. The audience looked friendly now.
Finally she played the last note. She took a bow. She had done it. She had played her first solo. As she walked offstage, her parents greeted her with hugs.

Three hours,18 km, a climbing height of 400 meters, this is what I remember from my first time of cycling in a mountain area.

That day we started from a village and rode along Xi Wu Road, and the road goes through green tree, lakes and fields. Before the tour, our coach (教练) taught us what we should know.
