You can see many people watching short videos on the bus or the subway in order to relax after a day’s work.

Born and grown up in Africa, I first learned about China through famous Kungfu movies. And when I was in
college, I was lucky to get a chance to visit the famous Shaolin Temple in Henan Province.
At the time, I didn’t realize that besides the long-expected Kungfu, thousands of surprises were waiting for me
in China. To begin with, I was not prepared for the weather. It was a difficult change from hot summer in Africa to
cold winter in China. The language was a huge problem for me as well. Getting used to Chinese food also seemed
impossible then, but now I’m a great fan of the food here.
The Kungfu training was far from easy and the first week was the hardest. We got up at 5 a.m. and practiced
throughout the day. The rest of the time was used for having meals and studying Chinese language and culture.
Although it was very tiring, the repeated and long-time exercises built up both my body and mind. The life in
Shaolin Temple made me realize how important politeness, respect and perseverance (毅力) are to the basic spirit
of Chinese Kungfu and that they should be practiced throughout our daily lives.
Day by day, I came to notice that China is a place full of wonders, a place where hard work pays off. And I
finally fell in love with its culture and people. That’s why I’ve decided to stay and continue my studies in China.
The world is becoming better united, and all our cultures are amazing. I will happily be a bridge of China to
the world, sharing my stories in this open and people-centered country.

That day, I was invited to be a judge of a competition at a college. All of the students had been given a piece
of paper with a topic on it.
The first one to speak looked a little uneasy. “My dear friends and judges,” he said loudly, “this is an unfair
competition.”
“I have been given the paper,” he continued, “to speak on the topic with just a few minutes’ preparation, while
those who come after me have more time to prepare their speeches!”
We were shocked at these words but could do nothing for this. He then left the stage and went out of the hall.
Several days later, I met him in parking lot by chance. “Who said life is fair ” I asked him, with a smile. He
was confused.
Then I pointed to the cars around, “Do you know anything about cars When new car is introduced into the
market, you might hear some nice figures (数字) from the car salesmen. But in fact, your car never works so well
as described—because the figures are shown just to say how good a car is.”
“Yes.” he nodded.
“And if you ask the salesmen more about these figures, they will say all the figures are just in ideal road
conditions!”
“Yes.” he said again.
“Can you find ideal road conditions in real life ” I asked him. He shook his head. “So that’s it. A car will sell
