Read Para. 3 and answer these questions.
This book has taught me not to give up. The fisherman fights hard, even though he loses the fish in the end. As Hemingway said, “Man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated." Even though I've already read the book three times, I'm not tired of
it yet. If you've never read
Ernest Hemingway, I recommend this book.
1. What has the writer learnt?
2. What does that famous saying of Ernest Hemingway mean?
3. Does the writer like the book? How do you know that?
The writer has learnt not to give up.
It means people aren't meant to be defeated. Bad things may harm us, but our will to keep going can't be broken.
Yes, he does.

Is the fisherman
successful? Why or why not?
Yes, he is successful. Although he lost the fish, he showed great courage and didn‘t give up, and he is still alive.
No, the old man isn't successful. He tried hard but still lost the fish, so from the result, he didn't reach his goal.
A successful loser;
a failed hero.
一个胜利的失败者;
The story is about an old man fishing, fighting with a big fish and sharks.
It shows the old man's courage and spirit.
A man’s can be destroyed, but his will not be destroyed.
A man can be but not .

defeated
The writer didn't tell us everything directly. We need to think and find those hidden meanings ourselves. This makes the story short but full of deep ideas.
sea
sharks
the old man
the huge fish
What do they stand for respectively(分别)?
the spirit of perseverance and courage
the goals, dreams or great achievements
difficulties, bad luck and challenges
the uncertain and challenging environment
What are the “sharks” in your life? How should we face the “sharks” ?
In my life, the "sharks" are tough exams. They always make me nervous. Also, conflicts with friends can be like sharks. They make me feel sad and confused.
When facing tough exams, I'll study hard in advance and stay calm. When there are conflicts with friends, I'll talk to them sincerely, listen to their feelings and share mine. That way, we can solve problems and get along better.
Even though we may lose our fish, we can enjoy the process.
Never give up when you are in difficulties!
Be brave to face it and keep optimistic. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.
Read the book report again and complete the chart.
