January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI system called DeepSeek-R1. This system is as powerful as the advanced chatbots from big companies like OpenAI and Google. Tests often used by American Al companies show that DeepSeek’s chatbot can answer questions, solve math problems and write code as well as other products on the market.
Moreover, this system costs much less to build. People used to think only big American tech companies could make the best AI systems, but now that idea is shown to be wrong. Chinese engineers said they spent about $ 6 million on computers for this new system. This is nearly 10 times less than what Meta paid for its latest AI technology.
In 2022, OpenAI released (发布) ChatGPT, which started a big wave in AI. Since then, many experts and investors (投资者) have believed that it’s impossible to compete with big companies without spending hundreds of millions of dollars on special computer chips.
When top AI companies train their chatbots, they use supercomputers with up to 16,000 or more chips (芯片). However, engineers from DeepSeek said they only needed about 2,000 special Nvidia chips.

Last winter, a really cold wave came to our town. The freezing air got into every small space, and the nights felt so long. One evening, I was sitting at my desk, busy with my Grade Nine textbooks. My teeth were shaking because of the cold. The thin blanket (毯子) on me didn’t help much to keep me warm.
Suddenly someone knocked on my door softly. It was my grandma. She was an old lady with a kind face and a warm smile that always made me feel good. In her hands, she had a thick quilt (被子) that she made by herself. “I thought you might be cold, dear,” she said kindly. She walked to me slowly. She didn’t walk very well because she was old. She carefully put the quilt around me. Right away, the cold disappeared, and I felt very warm. But what made me even warmer was the love in this small thing she did.
When she was making sure the quilt covered me well, I saw her hands. They had a lot of lines and felt not smooth, which saw her hard work all her life. These hands also made this quilt, one stitch (针脚) after another, just because she loved our family so much.
That night, under the warm quilt, I not only felt warm on my body but also very thankful inside. It made me remember that no matter how cold or hard things get, family love is always there, just like a warm quilt, keeping us safe and comfortable.

②How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk through the woods and see nothing worthy of note I can’t see, but I find hundreds of things to interest me only through touch. If I can get so much pleasure from touch, how much more beauty must be found by sight (视力) And I have imagined what I should most like to see if I were given the use of my eyes for just three days.

④On my second day. I should go to the museums to see man’s progress. I should try to explore the spirit of man through his art. In the evening, I should spend at the movies.
⑤The following day, I should spend in the world of common people going about the business of life. At midnight, endless night would close in on me again, and I should realize how much I had left unseen.
⑥I who am blind can give one suggestion to those who see: Use your eyes as if tomorrow you would be blind. The same is true of other senses. Hear the songs of birds. as if you would be deaf tomorrow. Smell the flowers, as if tomorrow you could never smell again…But of all the senses, I’m sure that sight must be the most pleasant.

Suddenly, someone knocked on my door softly.
