At the end of my first year in high school, I realized, as a sixteen-year-old boy, I needed to find a summer job since I was tired of having to ask my parents for money. I imagined having a job at a store or at a summer camp where I could play games with children. But what actually happened was disappointing. The only job I managed to find was cleaning up tables at a local restaurant.
At first, the idea of clearing tables upset me. The thought of getting up in the early morning to go clean up after people made me regret ever asking for a job. The first day was terribly busy. I was racing to get a table ready for the waiting customers. I’ll never forget how tired I felt that day, but I’ll also never forget sitting down for lunch with my workmates for the first time. People about my age or ten years older all sat and talked about their days. All of a sudden, it was good to be so included.
I’ve now worked at the restaurant for almost one year. I’ve learned to be happy about getting up so early, because I know there are going to be a few good moments every day there.
From starting there as a shy student, I’ve been able to grow into a person that can go up and greet anyone, at work or anywhere else. I’m also not as sensitive as I used to be—even if an impolite customer makes me feel bad, very soon I can laugh it off with my workmates. The little job has given me so much, and I can’t wait to go back and continue to grow from my experience.
Why did the boy decide to find a job
A.To make some friends. B. To make some money.
C. To get work experience. D. To support the family.

C. Because he could relax himself. D. Because he was older than his workmates.
29.What’s the boy like now
A. Shy. B. Outgoing. C. Humorous. D. Sensitive.
30.What might the boy do with this job in the future
A. Move to a different job. B. Do the job for fun. C. Give up the job. D. Stay in the job.

Before losing herself in the enjoyment of writing Chinese calligraphy (书法) for hours, Ma Huiyan makes a pot of tea using a beautiful tea set. She says it’s the perfect way to relax after a busy week. In today’s fast-paced world, a growing number of Chinese are turning to calligraphy as a way to quiet the mind. Ma Huiyan, a 32-year-old office worker in Shanghai, rediscovered her childhood love for this art. Though she also enjoys playing the violin or painting, calligraphy is where she finds spiritual peace. “Focusing on every stroke (笔画) clears my mind. Finishing a piece gives me great pride,” she says. Sometimes, when she completes a piece, she shares it on Douyin and tons of viewers post their works following the video and exchange opinions on how their works look.
At a time when people use a computer keyboard for writing, the ancient Chinese art of writing with a history of several thousand years still leaves a lasting mark on people’s lives, according to Fang Jianxun, a calligraphy researcher. He opened a calligraphy course at the university in 2019. “Writing calligraphy is not for practical use. The movements of the brush on paper are like a dance performance. The process includes a perfect match of one’s hands and mind. It’s a highbrow (高雅的) form of enjoying life in modern society,” says Fang. He points out people can learn calligraphy at any age, as opposite to the opinion that calligraphy must be learned from childhood.
For Zhou Jinsheng, writing calligraphy is more like sports activity. The 75-year-old has been writing on the ground with a brush in parks for 10 years. He needs just a 1-meter-long brush and water. When the weather is good, he goes to a park and writes on the ground. “Writing on the ground is very environmentally friendly. It requires the balance of my body and mind. Every time I finish my practice, I feel like finishing a set of tai chi exercises,” says Zhou.
Calligraphy’s timeless charm remains strong even in the modern age. As Fang says, “When most people type on keyboards, this ancient art helps modern hearts find peace.”
31.What does Ma Huiyan do before practicing calligraphy
She shows her tea set. B. She recalls her childhood hobby.
C. She prepares a pot of tea. D. She draws a beautiful painting.
32.Why can Ma Huiyan find spiritual peace in calligraphy
Because she can share her works. B. Because it helps to clear her mind.
C. Because it helps with her job. D. Because she’s enjoyed it for years.
33.What does Fang Jianxun mean by “Writing calligraphy is not for practical use”
A. Calligraphy is too hard to practice. B. Calligraphy values the beauty of art.
C. Calligraphy isn’t useful any more. D. Calligraphy should be protected.
34.Why does Zhou Jinsheng mention tai chi while talking about calligraphy practice in paragraph 3
A. To list information. B. To compare the differences.
C. To provide more details. D. To show the similarity.
35.What does the passage mainly discuss about Chinese calligraphy
A. Its history. B. Its development. C. Its writing skills. D. Its modern role.

It doesn’t matter if your business is big or small. You have to let people know that you’re there and what it is you have to sell. And that, of course, is where advertising (打广告) comes in. It’s everywhere you go—in newspapers and magazines, on TV, on radio, in cinemas, on websites...there’s no escape anywhere.
There are many ways to show people your ads, and this has always been true. Sandwich board men were, and in some places still are, a popular way of producing a simple and mobile ad at a reasonably low cost. There are surely more unusual ways, like sky-writing: hiring a special, smoke-producing plane to write the name of your product in the sky. It works well, but of course, it’s costly and doesn’t last long. Planes are also sometimes used to pull banners (横幅) with words across the sky. They’re still quite popular nowadays.
The world of advertising is all about making an impression and getting noticed, and this can lead people to be very creative. For example, an airline paid a cafe to advertise the price of their flights to Rome in the foam (泡沫) of coffee. Also, there’s a restaurant in the USA that made large, fake seashells (贝壳) and placed them on the beach. When passers-by opened up a shell, they read the message “Looking for seafood ” and the restaurant’s address. It is pretty smart and maybe works very well.
Advertising is often funny too. One of my favourite ads is made by as small a business as you can get—a window cleaner named Jim. He placed a small card behind the windows that he cleaned which said: “If you can read this, I’ve done a good job”, followed, of course, by his telephone number. This has been called “guerrilla (游击) advertising”—using very cheap materials like sandwich boards to make a big impression. Instead of using people, you could use something else, like cows. That’s what a website in Florida did.
However, some people feel that advertising is too intrusive. When facing ads, they may think “Can’t we have a cup of coffee or a walk along the beach without someone trying to sell us something ”
36.What can we learn about advertising from paragraph 1
Ads can help businesses grow in size. B. Some businesses need more ads than others.
C. The Internet is the best way of advertising. D. People can not avoid ads in everyday lives.
37.What did the airline and the US restaurant have in common in advertising
Both offered low prices. B. Both used online methods.
C. Both advertised in unusual places. D. Both cared about service.
38.Which of the following is the possible reason why the writer likes Jim’s ad best
It connected humor with his service. B. It used expensive materials creatively.
C. It was widely shared on the Internet. D. It followed common advertising rules.
39.What does the underlined word “intrusive” in paragraph 5 probably mean in Chinese
A. 便利的 B. 复杂的 C. 打扰人的 D. 有规律的
40.What is the main purpose of the text
To encourage people to advertise. B. To describe forms of advertising.
C. To compare different products on ads. D. To list reasons for advertising.
