In 1795 the new French government started the metric system (公制). Before that, every part of France had a different system for finding the size or length of something, for example, cloth makers worked with one system, food sellers used another. The government wanted one scientific system. They asked a group of scientists and people who were good at math to invent a system. They decided to use the numbers ten, hundred and thousand for their system.
Next, they had to decide on a “natural” length. They chose one ten-millionth (1/10,000,000) of the distance (距离) from the equator to the North Pole (北极点). They called this distance 1 meter.
According to the natural length, they finally decided to choose the gram for weighing things. A cubic (立方的) centimeter of water weighs 1 gram.
The metric system is a wonderful gift to the world. There are only a few countries that don’t use it. The US is one. The metric system is truly an international system.

完成图表。根据短文内容,完成图表中所缺信息。
When you see a globe, close your eyes and spin (旋转) it quickly. Then stop it with your finger. You will probably land on a body of water (水域). That’s because water covers 71% of the Earth’s surface. But if you don’t hit water, you might discover a place you’ve never heard of.
These days, computers and smartphones can tell us where we are. But globes have remained popular. Peter Bellerby, a globe maker in London, says this is because a globe “connects us to our planet.” With a globe, you can easily see what’s on the other side of the world from where you are. Joshua Nall is a museum director in England. He agrees that technology can give students more detailed information about the world. But the physical globe has become a symbol of knowledge.
Bellerby’s company makes about 600 globes a year. To make a globe, workers produce a sphere (球状物) first. Then they place map pieces, called “gores” onto the globe. The gores fit together to cover the sphere completely. Artists then paint the globe with different colors.
The world’s oldest surviving globe dates from the 1490s. It is called the “Earth Apple.” Martin Behaim, a German, made it. The globe shows the world in the late 15th century. You won’t find North or South America on it because Europeans hadn’t discovered them yet. Two of the world’s most famous globes were created about 450 years later. They were made for British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and U. S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt during World War Ⅱ.
Some interesting ____102____ about globes

【原文】Over 100 years later, the Titanic lies at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, about 3000 meters deep. But how did it sink On April 14, 1912, the ship entered dangerous icy waters. It received six warning messages, and the captain turned the ship southward, but he did not slow down. By the time the crew saw an iceberg, it was too late.
In 1985, National Geographic explorer Robert Ballard and French scientist Jean Louis Michel discovered the lost shipwreck. They also found many old items that show the human side of the story, like an old notebook that belonged to the 17-year-old passenger. It contains pencil writing you can still read today. With the help of new technology, researchers continue to study the Titanic. Our interest in this famous ship is still as strong as ever. If anything, it is the story of the Titanic that is truly unsinkable.

25. be seen##be read
26. Why
【原文】Leonardo da Vinci is considered one of the greatest painters of all time. He was born in Italy in 1452. He is still famous today because of his famous paintings, especially the Mona Lisa. However, not many people know that da Vinci was also an engineer and inventor. He drew plans and pictures and wrote about his many ideas in his diaries.
Not all of da Vinci’s plans worked out because they weren’t tested. However, some of his ideas came true. For example, one of his bridges was finally built 500 years after it was drawn, and flying machines such as helicopters are very common now. Everything in da Vinci’s diary is written backwards. Why Something da Vinci didn’t want others to know about his ideas as he wrote his diary in code. Others think it was just easier for him to write this way because he was left-handed. Either way, da Vinci’s diaries can only be read with a mirror so that you can see the words in the correct direction.
