In your dreams, you may clearly see something or hear someone talking. But what about
smells Can you ever remember smells from your dreams
A study published in 1896 looked at different sensory (感官的) experiences in dreams. It
found that visual (视觉的) experience mainly controls one’s dreams. It takes up about 85
percent, while auditory (听觉的) experience makes up 69 percent, and smell only 7 percent.
But why Scientists from the University of Illinois, US, have a theory based on what is know
about the brain.
In our brain, there is a special part called the cerebral cortex It is linked to our
feelings. As much as two-thirds of the cerebral cortex works in vision. So vision appears often in
dreams. Auditory experience is closely tied to language, and language is processed entirely in the
cerebral cortex.
Smell, on the other hand, has little to do with the cerebral cortex. It connects directly to the
memory and emotional systems. That is why a smell can sometimes bring back a distant memory.
Another possibility is that perhaps smell is not easily affected by our imagination. For
example, close your eyes and imagine your favorite dish. What do you get It is easy to think
about what it looks like. But it is not as easy to imagine its smell.
The vision and auditory senses are part of a complex process inside the brain. But smell is a
direct measurement (计量) of chemicals in the air. There is less imagination involved in smell.
Therefore, smell might be less influenced by the brain activity that happens while dreaming. It is
similar to taste and touch. That is why you don’t usually have the experience of taste and touch in
your dreams.
46.Which experience mainly controls one’s dreams, according to the 1896 study ________
A.Smell. B.Vision. C.Hearing. D.Taste and touch.
47.Which of the following is TRUE about the US scientists’ brain theory ________
A.Less than half of the cerebral cortex works in vision.
B.Auditory experience is not tied to language.
C.Smell has almost nothing to do with the cerebral cortex.
D.It’s difficult to imagine what things in your dreams look like.
48.According to paragraph 6 and 7, it’s easier to imagine a dish’s ________.
A.look than its smell B.smell than its look
C.taste than its smell D.smell than its taste
49.What is the best title for the story
A.How Does the Cerebral Cortex Work
B.Why Can’t You Smell in Your Dreams
C.What Experience Happens Most Often in Dreams
D.Why Can’t You Remember Smells from Your Dreams

2021 is the year of the ox(牛). In March, a set of stamps about the famous Tang Dynasty
painting, Five Oxen, came out. It allows more people to know better the great art of ancient China,
as well as the importance of agriculture(农业) in history.
Han Huang (723-787) was the painter of Five Oxen. He worked as a government official in
the Tang Dynasty. His paintings were loved by many because the animals he painted were so
alive. Unluckily, Five Oxen is probably his only painting left.
Five Oxen is one of the best animal paintings in China’s art history. In the painting, the five
oxen are in a line. They are of different colors and shapes. And each has a different appearance(形
态), walking or standing, holding their heads high or low. With lively expressions and bright eyes,
the oxen show the spirit of doing hard work without complaints(抱怨). As the name suggests,
▲ . It makes people focus(关注)on the oxen themselves.
The painting was missing in 1900. Luckily, it returned to China during the early 1950s.
However, it was terribly broken with many holes in it. Great efforts were made to save it. Now
Five Oxen, probably the oldest Chinese painting on paper, is kept with care in the Palace Museum
in Beijing.

One afternoon, a talking bird named Harpo arrived at a rescue center in MinnesotE Harpo, a
very vocal Moluccan cockatoo, began to talk with the sanctuary’s director, Galiene Cimperman.
After some time, Harpo suddenly said, “I hate this bird.” Harpo likely heard that phrase before,
but what did he mean by it According to Cimperman, Herpo was repeating the words, not using
them as language. However, she believes the phrase reflected his past traumas (创伤) and that
saying it was part of his healing process.
Many parrots like Harpo live in rescue centers across the US. Although there is research on
parrot memory and problem-solving, their emotions are mostly unexplored. This makes
understanding the relationship between parrots and people challenging. Parrots’ intelligence,
social nature, and physical needs often make it difficult for them to thrive in captivity. Yet, more
than 50 million parrots live in homes and zoos worldwide. Many end up in rescue centers, where
volunteers like Cimperman must learn about their past to help them find comfort.
There is even less research on whether parrots can experience psychological trauma.
However, they have the cognitive abilities necessary to experience long-term trauma. One of the
few scientific papers on parrot trauma came from a collaboration between the rescue center and
psychologist Gay Bradshaw. The paper describes how parrots at the sanctuary often meet the
criteria for PTSD (创伤后应激障碍)。
Parrots in captivity often face distressing experiences from birth. They may be raised in
isolation and receive little attention. Parrots are social animals, but as pets, they often have limited
contact with humans or other birds. Even kind-hearted owners may struggle to care for them
properly. Some parrots face abuse and cannot escape stressful situations
At rescue centers, it is essential for parrots to feel in control of their lives. Volunteers help
them build trust and allow them to make choices, similar to how they would in the wild. Healing
from trauma may take months or even years.
By the end of Harpo’s life in 2021, he had become a friendly and joyful bird, no longer
saying “I hate this bird.” The possibility that parrots experience emotions similar to humans
highlights the need to protect them in captivity and the wild.
54.What can be inferred about the life of parrots in captivity based on Harpo’s experience
A.They can learn to communicate effectively with humans
B.They often experience significant emotional trauma.
C.They do not have the ability to remember past experiences.
D.They can easily adapt to their new environment.
55.What is a big challenge in understanding the relationship between parrots and people
A.The lack of research on parrots’ emotions.
B.The lack of interest in studying parrots.
C.Parrots’ inability to communicate with humans
D.Parrots’ tendency to repeat un comprehended phrases without understanding them.
56.What is one of the strategies rescue centers use to help parrots heal from trauma
A.They provide them with a new owner.
B.They give them control over their lives.
C.They teach them new phrases to practice.
D.They allow them to interact with other animals.
57.Which of the following would be the best title for the text
A.The challenges of keeping parrots in captivity
B.A closer look at parrot rescue centers in the US
C.The life and times of Harpo: A case study on a talking bird
D.Parrots are intelligent, but do we understand their emotions

We see countless faces every day-at school, in stores and on television. But how many aces
can we really recognize For the first time, scientists from UK’s York University have an answer:
about 5, 000.
The research team asked university students to recall people they were able to recognize in
their everyday lives. These people included family members, friends, neighbors and famous
people. By recording how the students’recall rates (频率) slowed down over time, the scientists
estimated (估计) when they would run out of recognizable faces.
Scientists found that these students could recognize between 1, 000 and 10, 000 faces, with
the average being 5, 000.
Scientists who do research in this area usually just focus on how the brain tells the
difference between familiar and unfamiliar faces. “But we realized we were missing something if
we didn’t know how many familiar faces people did recognize, ” researcher Mike Burton told the
Guardian.
The ability to recognize thousands of faces is an important part of human interaction,
according to the Washington Post. Imagine awkwardly (尴尬地) waving at a stranger who you
thought was a friend-or much worse, being mistaken for a murderer.
However, our ability to recognize faces is different for different people. It is usually harder
for people to recognize others who are of a different race (种族) What’s more, about 2 percent of
the population are thought to have “face blindness”, the Guardian reported. People with face
blindness find it hard to notice differences in the faces of strangers. Others may even have a hard
time recognizing familiar faces.
The team’s findings could be used to improve face recognition (面部识别) technology.
This technology is used to identify people at airports and in police investigations (调查).

Hello, everyone, as we all know, the earth is our home, but it’s getting worse. We can do
the following things to take care of it.
First, we can save water by taking short showers. Second, reusing is often the best way to
save energy. Third, try to go shopping wisely. For example, don’t buy a toy if we already have one.
What’s more, we should also reduce waste. We can recycle paper, plastic and glass to make our
environment Greener. I joined a tree planting activity last Saturday. I planted fifteen trees with my
friends in the park.
If everyone makes efforts to protect our environment, it will become better and better.

A
In your dreams, you may clearly see something or hear someone talking.

But did
you know that long ago, snakes had four legs and could run...than rabbits ”可知,这里是蛇和兔
Once, the
Moon Goddess warned all the...that the weather would be very dry soon.”可知,句中“all the+可数
Leave now, here will turn
into...very hot and dry place!”
故填 a。
But the lazy snake just
laughed and said...‘I’m staying right here!’.”
根据“As
time passed, the hungry snake wanted...because the rivers dried up and there was no food left.”可
知,“want to do sth.”
填 to leave。
Unluckily, its legs...badly by the hot sand.”
般过去时的被动语态结构是“was/were+过去分词”,“legs”是复数,所以用“were burned”。故
填 were burned。
根据“The Moon Goddess felt sorry...the snake.”可知,“feel
sorry for sb.” 故填 for。
So she made...legs
disappeared and gave it a smooth body to slide on.”
故填 its。
Remember this...you are too proud, it will make you lose things.”
故填 if/when。
This story reminds
us that it’s...to be able to look ahead and stay humble.”可知,“It’s+形容词+to do sth.”

The 15-minute Break
Our school has made a great change in the inter-class break. It is longer, from 10 to 15 minutes.
This extension allows us to fully utilize the break time for rest and activities. We have a variety of
sports to choose from, such as basketball, volleyball, running practice, and jump rope. These
activities not only help us to relax and reduce stress, but also provide us with more energy for the
next class.
In my opinion, the 15-minute break is a great idea. It gives us more time to engage in physical
