CS 485 (Fall 2024)
David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science
Course Outline
It is aimed to follow the first two parts of the textbook. The first part will be devoted to the general theory of machine learning, and in the second part we will go over some common basic algorithms(算法) and explain the theory. The first 20 chapters of the book are all important for understanding machine learning.
Notes:
● The lectures are flexible without creating a lecture-by-lecture plan in advance. The more interactive the lectures are, the more students learn from them.
● Difference from CS480: This course focuses on theory not practice. It explains the principles behind common algorithms rather than teaching how to use them in practice. This is a rather different focus than that of CS480 (even when both courses discuss the same algorithms).
● There will be no coding and no practical applications of algorithms in this course.
Lectures
Lectures take place online on Mondays and Wednesdays 11:30 am-12:50 pm.
Grading Scheme
Assignments Average of the 4 best of 5 assignments—40%
Mid-Term Assessment Counts only if better mark than the final—20%
Final Assessment 40% or 60% if better than the midterm

Last February, a trip to Caribbean island unexpectedly changed my life—probably for the better. What surprised me most was how the reality contrasted with my expectations.
I read numerous blogs and travel diaries to prepare myself for the trip, so I thought I’d go in with a fairly good idea of what to expect Each and every post I read spoke of fantastic landscapes, wonderful beaches, and charming cities. All of it was true in my experience—except for the interactions with some locals. I didn’t find them as warm as I had expected. They were polite, but their habit of getting something in return—whether souvenirs, small gifts, or other items—often left me with a mixed impression and a sense of uneasiness.
After returning home, I felt the desire to write about my experience—not for other sites or papers as I’d often do. This time, I wanted to share my thoughts freely. So I opened my own blog. With zero tech knowledge, zero understanding of online content creation, I started writing and telling people what they should really expect during a trip. I’d put up the occasional post, while working my regular job.
At the end of the year, my job contract as a social researcher at the local university ended. I decided to take a break from that career path for a while. I packed my bags and left for a long-term trip to Central and South America. I started writing on the blog more consistently, learning as I went, and eventually took my blog full-time, turning it into a career.
As of today, I have never looked back and have no regrets. The one thing I’ll do, as soon as I can, is return to that island to say thank you—because it changed my life in a way nothing else has ever done.
24. What made the author unexpected during his trip
A. The beautiful scenery. B. Some locals’ behavior.
C. The language barrier. D. Large crowds of visitors.
25. Why did the author write about his trip on his own blog
A. To practice his writing skills. B. To seek for a new position.
C. To promote the local tourism. D. To share his true feelings.
26. What happened to the author’s career
A. He decided to be a researcher. B. He intended to retire from college.
C. He signed a new job contract. D. He started his career as a blogger.
27. What’s probably the author’s current attitude towards his trip
A. Grateful. B. Regretful. C. Indifferent. D. Neutral.

In the movie Love, Actually, Hugh Grant’s character shares how the arrivals gate at Heathrow airport lifts his mood. The scene shows people hugging, laughing, and reuniting—a perfect example of how physical touch, like holding hands or a warm hug, connects us. Science proves these simple acts do more than spread joy; they also improve mental and physical health.
Strong evidence links physical touch to better health. A large analysis of 212 studies (with over 13,000 people) looked at the effects of touch, such as massage therapy (按摩疗法) or gentle hugs. These studies spanned a wide range of populations, including infants, adults, and the elderly, and examined the effects of touch on various health outcomes. The results were clear: touch helps people sleep better, lowers blood pressure, and reduces tiredness. For example, a study found that holding hands or a comforting pat on the back reduced stress chemicals, making people feel calmer.
Touch is especially helpful for reducing pain, sadness, and worry. Hospitals use massage therapy to significantly improve patient outcomes. Patients who received relaxing touch or massages felt less pain and anxiety. Cancer patients reported less pain and better moods after massages. Elderly people in care homes who were given gentle touch also felt less lonely and more connected to others.
Researchers think touch works by releasing oxytocin, a hormone that helps people bond and reduces stress. Touch also activates the body’s natural relaxation system, which helps recover from stress.
In a world filled with technology, human touch remains irreplaceable. A hug, a pat, or a kind gesture reminds us of our shared humanity. Next time you see people hugging at an airport, remember: these small acts aren’t just heartwarming—they’re scientifically proven to heal both body and mind.
28. Why does the author mention Grant’s sharing in the first paragraph
A. To criticize some airport services. B. To provide a real-life example.
C. To raise public awareness of health. D. To discuss airport security rules.
29. What may happen to a patient receiving massages
A. Feeling refreshed. B. Improving creativity.
C. Boosting memory. D. Becoming confident.
30. How might hospitals apply this research
A. Help the patients do sports. B. Replace drug therapy for cancer.
C. Train staff in touch therapy. D. Lower the treatment expenses.
31. What is the main idea of the passage
A. Movies inspire scientific discovery. B. Touch therapy is gaining popularity.
C. Massages can cure serious diseases. D. Physical touch enhances well-being.

Over year ago, some of my colleagues and I started a tradition in which we try out different restaurants in the Austin area. This quickly became a highlight worth looking forward to. Each outing has been filled with great food, engaging conversations, and lively debates. But no matter what the evening’s discussion is, one thing is a constant: however full we feel after the main course, we always prefer to order dessert.
A team of researchers led by Marielle Minere and Henning Fenselau, along with colleagues, set out to investigate why this happens. Their findings revealed a surprising brain mechanism at play, one that helps explain why sugar cravings continue even when we are no longer hungry.
Central to their discovery are POMC neurons (神经元), a group of cells that have long been known to regulate appetite and hunger. Traditionally, POMC neurons are believed to work by promoting fullness. But Minère and colleagues discovered something unexpected, which is that not all POMC neurons function this way. Instead of reducing appetite, some POMC neurons actually increase it, but only for sugar! In other words, while the body signals that it has had enough food, the brain at the same time activates a pathway that specifically encourages sugar consumption.
To test this, the scientists used advanced imaging techniques to watch these neurons in action as mice encountered different foods. When researchers blocked the actions of these neurons, mice showed less interest in sugary foods after meals. Interestingly, this effect was specific to sugar and had no impact on the consumption of fatty foods.
Of course, this study also has wider applications beyond just explaining our after-dinner excess (过量). This discovery could lead to useful treatments for overeating, especially when it comes to sugar.
32. What does the underlined word “cravings” in paragraph 2 refer to
A. A routine meal schedule. B. A dislike for certain flavors.
C. A sudden loss of appetite. D. A strong desire for specific foods.
33. What is the key discovery about POMC neurons
A. They regulate hunger for more foods.
B They are responsible for burning calories.
C. Some of them encourage sugar appetite.
D. Some of them influence sleep pattern.
34. What happened when POMC neurons were blocked in mice
A. Mice lost their appetite entirely. B. Mice consumed more fatty foods.
C. Sugary foods were less attractive. D. More vegetables were preferred.
35. What is the text likely to discuss next
A. Possible effects of sugar on mood. B. New ways to control sugar intake.
C. Potential harms of sugar consumption. D. Practical strategies to boost appetite.

For many college students, the concept of “home” becomes no longer just a physical place but a feeling of comfort and belonging. 36 . Here are some strategies that might help you.
Make Self-Care a Priority(优选)
College life often feels like an endless cycle of assignments and responsibilities. Leave little room for personal time. However, maintaining moments for yourself—whether it’s reading a book or simply disconnecting from screens—is important. 37 . When you prioritize well-being alongside academics, college starts to feel more like home.
Find Comfort in Connections
Homesickness often comes from missing familiar people. 38 . But also celebrate small joys with new ones. For example, after a tough week of exams, sharing an ice cream cake with a friend can create a sense of belonging. Home isn’t just a place—it’s the people who make you feel seen.
Establish Routines
39 . Whether it’s a morning coffee or a night walk, these habits create predictability. They’re especially helpful during stressful periods, guiding you when everything else feels stressful.
Embrace Homesickness
Missing home is natural. 40 . Remind yourself: “I’m building a new life here, and that takes time.” Feeling homesick helps you adapt while honoring where you came from.
Home in college isn’t handed to you. It’s built through small, deliberate choices. By carving out time for yourself, nurturing relationships, creating routines, and accepting homesickness, you’ll find that “home” becomes less about a location and more about where you feel most like yourself.
A. These breaks recharge you.
B. Stay in touch with family and friends.
C Random schedules inspire more creativity.
D. Creating this sense of home requires efforts.
E. Instead of resisting it, accept it as your growth.
F. Routines provide stability (稳定) in college life.
G. Academic advisors can fully replace family support.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使其构成一篇完整的短文,
My fingers touched the sick bandages (绷带) covering my eyes. The physical pain had faded, but the memory hadn’t—the sudden fire of the car, the trapped child’s screams, my desperate rush to save her. Now darkness wrapped my world, and light never came.
Nightfall brought a visitor. “Your courage and kindness moved me. You are a hero.” a woman’s voice stated softly. “I don’t want pity!” I said in a weak voice, turning my back to her. Maybe I couldn’t see the sunlight forever, tears rolling down my cheeks. At that time, someone wiped away my tears. No voice. That night grew late. As I struggled to step out of my room towards the bathroom, a firm hand caught my arm—steady and determined.
“You again Are you a nurse ” I asked with the doubts that had been wandering in my mind.
“Yeah. Call me Lena.” she replied, her voice warm. Who could imagine she would change my life
Form that moment, Lena’s voice became my compass—guiding me through endless corridors, describing the golden sunlight through windows, insisting I’d “see” again. Gradually, we began sharing stories and dreams, which created an atmosphere filled with laughter and warmth. When listening to her, I could see the weight of my loneliness and fear of losing sight slowly lifting. It was as if her companionship had produced a spark (火花) within me. Our friendship became a source of joy for me, turning my lonely days into moments full of laughter and hope. Lena taught me about resilience (韧性), love, and the importance of bravery. I felt a strong sense of gratitude.
One day, she suddenly grabbed my shoulder tightly. “They’re testing electronic eyes—operations that make the blind see again. Volunteers are needed.” Her voice trembled with excitement. “Why me ” I whispered, brushing my bandages. Her hand rested gently over mine. “Because heroes don’t just save others—they fight to save themselves too.” The words hung in my head till I entered the operating room with Lena.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为120左右;
2. 在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When I woke up again, bright light greeted my eyes.

Dear Peter,
I’m really excited to share with you my School Hike to a rural village last week.
Our day began with a long and pleasant hike across green wheat fields that stretched as far as the eye could see. The clear blue sky, white clouds, the green crops and the blooming wild flowers along the road altogether created a picturesque painting.
The highlight of the trip was when we joined the villagers in the fields to learn about farming. They showed us how to tend to the crops, and we even had a go at it ourselves. It made me appreciate the hard work that goes into rural life.
I’ll always cherish the memories of the hike. I can’t wait to hear about your countryside adventures!
Best regards!

When I woke up again, bright light greeted my eyes. A gentle scent of flowers filled the air as a familiar voice approached, “Congratulations!” A face appeared before me, curly hair, and bright eyes full of tears. “Lena ” I murmured, my throat tight. “Yes, the surgery was undoubtedly successful!” she exclaimed with a warm smile that could melt snow—the same smile I’d memorized in the dark. Tears rolled down my cheeks, but this time, they were tears of joy. Lena wasn’t just my guide through darkness—she was my light. She showed me that even broken heroes could heal, especially when someone believes in them. To me, Lena was also a true hero. Through her support and belief in me, I learnt the valuable lesson of fighting to save myself.

Text 10
Welcome, everyone, to the weekly meeting here at our restaurant. Before we start, I would like to remind you of one thing. We need your measurements for the new staff clothes we are ordering. Please let me have them as soon as possible. Anyway, I’ll start the meeting with good news. The restaurant is fully booked for the whole of this week. Of course, the sunny weather is helping to bring people out of their homes after the recent rains. But they have booked tables at our restaurant, instead of somewhere else. That shows we must be doing something right and they enjoy eating here. So, keep up the good work. As you all know, next week is the Summer Festival. Monday is a public holiday. The manager and I discussed whether we should open that day, but we decided against it. So there will be no work that day. Also next week, we will be introducing several new meal choices to our menu. So I will now hand it over to the head cook to explain what you can expect.
