If you spot a lone fridge sitting on a city sidewalk, don’t quickly assume it’s just someone’s trash waiting to be taken away. There’s a good chance it’s actually full of free food, there for anyone in the neighborhood who might need it. These “community fridges” have been popping up in cities across the U. S. as more and more people struggle to get enough to eat.
Community fridges are a creative, neighborly way to fight food insecurity. They’re set up and looked after by local volunteers who want to help their communities. Volunteers gather donations from grocery stores, restaurants, and even individuals. They use social media to let people know what’s inside, what’s running low, and when new food has arrived. To keep things safe and inviting, they clean the fridges often and arrange the contents so everything is easy to see and clearly marked.
Julian Bentivegna, a chef and restaurant owner, started a community fridge this year. He told the National Post that he was surprised and happy to see how much people cared. At first, he worried there might be too many donations and not enough people taking the food, but instead, things have balanced out naturally. “We don’t police the fridges at all. We just let people take what they need and leave what they don’t,” he said.
In Brooklyn’s Bushwick neighborhood, Pam Tietze founded the Friendly Fridge. She shared a story about a woman who once relied on soup kitchens but now can pick up fresh ingredients to cook at home, giving her more dignity and choice. “There’s the dignity of going to a fridge instead of a soup kitchen. I’m confident we’re serving those in need,” said Tietze.
Although these fridges make a real difference, it’s sad that ordinary people are left to patch up gaps in the food system — a problem that really needs government action. A quarter of New Yorkers deal with food insecurity, and about 30 percent of all food in the U. S. ends up wasted. Generous volunteers can help, but lasting change will come only from better policies and food distribution. Still, it’s heartening to see communities look after each other. If you want to help, check freedge.org or search “community fridge” online to find one in your city.
4. How does a community fridge operate
A. It is set up by the community officials. B. Food information is spread via social media.
C. Donors mark and organize the contents. D. Volunteers help to repair a broken fridge.
5. What difference did community fridges bring to the woman according to Paragraph 4
A. She could get more and fresher food. B. Her cooking skills were enhanced at home.
C. Her pride was prevented from being hurt. D. She found a position in the soup kitchen.
6. Why does the author feel sad
A. The government fails to take on the duty. B. A quarter of New Yorkers are starving.
C. Food donations are severely insufficient. D. Community fridges don’t meet the expectations.
7. What is the purpose of the last paragraph
A. To advertise the website freedge.org. B. To praise the donors and volunteers.
C. To show the author’s positive attitude. D. To call for donations to the fridge project
C
Misinformation and disinformation can be a threat to our society. It can divide communities and make it harder for people to make informed choices. No one is immune. “We just don’t have the time, the cognitive resources or even the motivation to literally fact-check every piece of information that comes our way,” says Briony Swire-Thompson, director of the Psychology of Misinformation Lab at Northeastern University.
People have a whole life’s worth of experiences that affects how they engage with whatever they read online or hear on the news. So often people’s memories really shaped the ways that they engage in current ways with social systems and their media environments. Fortunately, people trust information more when it comes from sources or cultural contexts they are familiar with, so talking to your loved ones can make a difference.
Swire-Thompson says she’s found discussing sources to be an effective way to help reveal misinformation. That will help you have a conversation about who or what you both trust and why. In one study, Swire-Thompson found highlighting a source’s low expertise worked well, like pointing out the source’s lack of skills, professional training, relevant educational background, etc. You can also point out any conflicts of interest they might have. “It was far more effective than just correcting the misinformation,” says Swire-Thompson. You might want to keep that correction short, but research shows providing a “factual alternative,” or saying what is actually true, is more effective than just saying a piece of information is false.
Certainly change after one conversation is not guaranteed. These conversations are not about trying to transform someone naturally. It is more about how we can build this coexisting trust with each other and continue these types of conversations in a sustainable and healthy way. There is always this sense of urgency to say “false, I want to correct you!” But to build long-term relationships, to be able to do this on a slower scale will have a larger impact.
8. What causes people to believe in false information
A. Lack of social engagement. B. Effect of personal experiences.
C. Threat from sources of wrong news. D. Little access to information checking.
9. What is an effective way to correct the misinformation
A Providing professional training. B. Citing the source of information.
C. Offering the factual version of the story. D. Praising the effective news collection.
10. What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A. Transforming a person’s nature is challenging.
B. Harmonious relationships beat being right.
C. False information needs urgent attention.
D. Conversations are encouraged among family.
11. What is a suitable title for the text
A. Trust Loved Ones With Heart B. Misinformation Harms Our Society
C Correction Enhances Communication D. Remove Misinformation by Connection
D
Like rolling into a gas station during a road trip, whale sharks use oil and gas platforms as a brief stop during their migrations of thousands of kilometers across the oceans. The human-made structures attract marine life — including the sharks’ favorite snack: plankton (浮游生物). But experts worry that this attraction could put the endangered giant creatures at risk of ship strike or chemical pollution.
Satellite tracking of whale sharks off the coast of western Australia shows how oil and gas platforms influence the movements of these gentle giants, marine ecologist Ben D’ Antonio, of the Australian Institute of Marine Science and University of Western Australia, and colleagues report January 18.
“Think of seafloor features like a truck stop on a highway,” D’ Antonio says. “On a family vacation, we often pull into truck stops to fuel up and grab a quick bite before heading to our final destination. Whale sharks seem to be using seafloor features in a similar way.”
Over 14 years, the researchers tagged 78 whale sharks, tracked their movements and cross-checked the location of landform characteristics to see how these affect the sharks’ routes. While natural canyons and seamounts also act as brief stops, this attraction towards oil platforms — possibly bolstered by plankton’s attraction to the platforms’ rays of light — could put the huge animals at risk of being hit by a ship or pollution from oil spills or discharges. It’s impossible to know exactly how many are being killed by ships because their bodies sink without a sign.
The researchers hope this finding will help decision makers managing marine protected areas and raise awareness of the potential impact on marine life when human-made platforms are disused or new structures are built. “This will become more relevant as developments for renewable energy begin to add additional structure to many coastal areas,” D’ Antonio says.
12. Why do whale sharks use oil and gas platforms as a brief stop
A. To admire the man-made structures. B. To get food attracted by the platforms.
C. To attract other species of marine life. D. To attack ships stopping at the place.
13. What risk can whale sharks meet when approaching oil and gas platforms
A. Colliding with ships. B. Missing their snacks.
C. Being hunted by people. D. Being disturbed by tourists.
14. What does the underlined word “bolstered” mean in paragraph 4
A. Sheltered. B. Boosted. C. Rejected. D. Polluted.
15. What role do the researchers hope this finding will play
A. Promote the economy of coastal cities. B. Improve the stability of the gas platforms.
C Assist decision makers with structure planning. D. Help countries to upgrade energy structures.

How to Recover Effectively After Exercise
Proper recovery is as important as the workout itself. Many students push themselves hard during sports but neglect post-exercise care, which may lead to injuries or fatigue. Here are science-based strategies to maximize your recovery.
1. Cool down properly
Never skip the cool-down phase after training. A 5-10 minute slow jog or walk helps your heart rate return to normal gradually. This prevents dizziness caused by sudden stops and removes waste products from muscles. ____16____
2. Rehydrate (补水) smartly
Sweating during exercise causes fluid loss. ____17____ For intense workouts lasting over an hour, drinks containing electrolytes are recommended. Avoid sugary beverages as they may slow down hydration.
3. ____18____
During deep sleep your body releases growth hormones that repair tissues. This is when magic happens for muscle recovery. Students should aim for 7-9 hours nightly. Creating a dark, quiet sleeping environment significantly enhances recovery efficiency.
4. Try active recovery
Light activities on rest days boost blood circulation. ____19____ These low-intensity movements deliver nutrients to muscles without causing strain. Even a short walk between study sessions makes a difference.
5. Track your progress
Note down exercise duration, intensity, and how your body responds. This helps identify patterns and adjust training plans. ____20____ Many apps provide visual graphs to make tracking easier.
A. Recover your muscles.
B. Prioritize sleep quality.
C. Swimming or cycling at a gentle pace works best.
D. Keeping a fitness journal brings unexpected benefits.
E. Drink water immediately even if you don’t feel thirsty.
F. Set specific goals before starting any exercise program.
G. Stretching major muscle groups for 15-30 seconds each can also improve flexibility.

第二节(满分25 分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It all started when the new neighbour across the street brought back a Ping-Pong table and left it on his front lawn. He is a college student, and if you live in a college town, you understand that a Ping-Pong table on a front lawn is not just a Ping-Pong table. It’s a beer-pong table.
For those unfamiliar, beer pong involves bouncing balls into an opponent’s cup of beer, thereby forcing that person to drink. I knew it so well because I had spent years living on the other side of town, closer to the university. At that time, my husband and I shared a property line with 27 students, the sounds of beer pong extending late into the night and early into the morning, accompanied by unpleasant instrument sounds.
The best we could do was move to a quieter part of town, which we did at great expense. And now, here was this guy with a new beer-pong table within full view of my new kitchen window.
I come from a big family full of people easy to anger. I have always hoped that I’d be the one to change. I go to therapy. I journal and forest-bathe. These have helped soften the anger I inherited, but it’s still in there. Occasionally, I lose control and I say something I regret. The best way I know to repair the damage is with food. I’ve gifted tons of homemade food and jars of orange juice squeezed from homegrown fruit. I’ve seen the way a simple gift, such as a loaf of banana bread, can open the door of a heart that’s hurt, even if only a little.
Of course, I’d rather not hurt anyone in the first place. But when I saw that beer-pong table, the memories of drunk, loud and entitled college students angered me so much that it overturned a truth I hold to be self-evident: that all neighbours are created equal — at least in theory.

46. Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share with you an exhibition of Ancient Chinese Science and Technology in the City Museum last Friday.
Once inside, we saw ancient astronomical tools, learning how ancestors precisely observed the sky. The paper-making display was fascinating too, showing raw to paper transformation. Bronze vessels and traditional medicine exhibits were equally impressive.
This visit filled me with awe for ancestors’ wisdom. Their creations still benefit us. I’ m proud of my country’s rich heritage. Hope you can experience it someday.

47. 范文
So I walked right up to the student’s house, past that stupid table and knocked on the door. As soon as the door was open, I even didn’t bother to introduce myself and directly told him that his table had to go. “Who are you ” he asked. “And what gives you the right to make such a ridiculous demand ” His impoliteness only infuriated me more. I started to yell how stupid his table was and how inconsiderate he was. Suddenly, I felt a pull on my arm: my husband. He had predicted my action and appeared on time to pull me away. The rest of the day, I was shaking with anger. But the next morning, I awoke, full of shame. Why couldn’t I keep it together Why couldn’t I approach him nicely So I decided to do what I was good at: turning to the fridge.
I put the dough balls on a cookie sheet and baked them just until they looked and smelled perfect. Then I walked what felt like miles across the street to the kid’s doorstep, right past the beer-pong table. The student opened the door wearing a white T-shirt. I offered the plate with one hand, the other pressed to my chest. I told him that the person he met yesterday wasn’t me. At least, it wasn’t the person I wanted to be. “Would you please forgive me ” I asked. He looked down at the plate, and his face softened. He said the person I met at his door yesterday hadn’t been him, either. He was sorry, too. Then he closed the door and I walked back across the street, feeling like I’d witnessed a miracle.
