During the break, I realized that musical theatre was what I truly needed. I loved to sing and had been taking piano lessons for a few years, but nothing felt as perfect as musical theatre. Two years later, I was in my first musical, Anne of Green Gables, at a community arts studio. It was the start of something incredible that would shape my life.I went on to perform in shows such as Cinderella and Mary Poppins, and I also took part in my elementary school's production of Into The Woods, featuring music by one of my favourite composers, Stephen Sondheim. Although my high school did not produce musicals, I still participated in several plays at the National Theatre School Drama Festival. There was a period when I questioned whether musical theatre was as magical as I remembered. I felt disconnected from that original passion. That all changed during a grade 11 drama class trip to Niagara on the Lake to see Holiday Inn at the Shaw Festival. I knew little about it besides its connection to a classic Bing Crosby film from the 1940s, yet as the overture (序曲) began and the cast started singing, I experienced that life-changing moment once again. It reminded me why performing is my passion and renewed my commitment to the art form.Musical theatre has become a huge part of my identity. It uniquely combines music, acting, and dance into an art form that touches the heart and electrifies the spirit. I owe much of my growth to the amazing teachers who guided me along the way. Music holds great importance in my life, and I owe it all to those who came before me. Musical theatre has the power to change us, lifting us up and opening our eyes.4. Which event marked the beginning of the author’s musical theatre journey A. Taking piano lessons as a child. B. Watching Seussical the Musical.C. Performing in Anne of Green Gables. D. Joining drama festivals in high school.5. What dan we infer about the author’s high school experience A. He stayed active in theatre through plays.B. He stopped performing without musicals.C. He participated in a few favourite musicals.D. He regretted missing musical opportunities.6. What does the “overture” in Holiday Inn symbolize for the author A. A connection to an old movie. B. The technical skills in theatre.C. Boredom from a long bus ride. D. The return of his love for musicals.7. What is the best title for the text A. The Magic of Music. B. Musical Theatre, Myself.C. My Preference for Music. D. Musical Theatre, My Dream.CWhat’s best: a brand new phone or a day out with your friends Is it better to spend money to buy things or to do things A study of UK consumers showed that six in ten people would rather spend their money on something to do than on something to have. Those aged 18 — 34 reported spending the highest amount on fun activities.Material possessions (物质财产) can last for many years, while experiences are fleeting. This, however, might be the wrong way to look at things. Psychology professor Thomas Gilovich discovered that the happiness that objects provide can disappear quickly. We adapt to having new possessions, so that rather than being something we are excited by, they just become our new normal. Soon we may even want to buy a better version of the things we own. Our feelings around possessions can also be affected by others. We tend to compare what we have with other people. If someone else has something better, we can start to feel jealous.A holiday or a day out may be short, but the happiness it provides can last much longer. Waiting for our latest purchases to be delivered is disappointing, but waiting for an exciting event gives us a feeling of expectation. Experiences are often shared, so we gain pleasure from social connection and time spent with other people. Memories of our experiences become part of our identity. As Gilovich points out, we are the sum of our experiences. Indeed, the very fact that experiences last for a limited time can give them value. A physical good gets worse over time, while our memories of an experience can give us pleasure year after year.Of course, it’s not always that simple. Other studies have suggested that happiness gained from experiences might depend on your personality type, and how many possessions you already have. People with more introverted (内向的) personality types may get less benefit from social occasions and those with few possessions may get greater benefit from objects. However, for many of us, it could be that when choosing how to spend money, we’ll get far more benefit by spending on experiences, rather than possessions.8. What is the main conclusion of the new study A. Young people spend much on expensive items.B. Materials bring more happiness than memories.C. Four in ten people enjoy a high level of material wealth.D. Quite a few people prefer doing things to buying things.9 What does the underlined word “fleeting” in paragraph 2 probably mean A. Short-lived. B. Time-tested.C. Eye-catching. D. Far-reaching.10. How does the author mainly develop the argument in paragraph 3 A. By giving expert advice. B. By making comparisons.C. By providing examples. D. By sharing some stories.11. What is the author’s attitude towards spending money on experiences A. Cautious. B. Doubtful. C. Negative. D. Favorable.DA free online platform that allows speakers to practise in front of thousands of virtual viewers has been launched to help with the nervousness or fear many feel when presenting to an audience. Dr Chris Macdonald, who was the founder of the Immersive Technology Lab at Cambridge University and created the online platform, said the approach was an attempt to reduce the lengthy waits or high costs people often face when seeking help. “Most people have some form of anxiety when speaking in public but very few people are accessing the treatment. So what I was trying to do with this project is fix those barriers,” he said. The Virtual Reality Public Speaking platform employs exposure therapy (疗法) — the idea that facing fears can help reduce them — combined with breathing exercises and eye movements that help slow the heart rate and contain the fear response. People using the technology can practise speaking in various virtual reality (VR) settings, from an empty classroom or small audiences of photorealistic figures, to a stadium of 10,000 viewers, with the choice to add distractions such as flashing cameras and loud noises. Macdonald said the latter was an example of “overexposure therapy”.A recent study published by Macdonald suggests the platform could be beneficial. The research involved 29 teenagers from China, who each undertook a 30-minute period in which they alternated (交替) between using the VR system and practising a simple breathing exercise, after which they delivered a prepared one-minute script (稿) in English to 34 people in real life. The percentage of students who said they were anxious public speakers fell from 65% before the experiment to 20% after the presentations, while the percentage who described themselves as confident rose from 31% to 79%. More students said they enjoyed public speaking after using the platform.Dr Matteo Cella, a psychologist who was not involved in the work, said the platform built on the ideas of traditional exposure therapy, making it more accessible and easy to carry out. But Cella said overexposure could probably strengthen people’s avoidance of public speaking, and that more trials were needed to evaluate the system, noting the published work did not fully prove its effectiveness.12. What is the Virtual Reality Public Speaking platform aimed at A. Offering various virtual reality settings.B. Helping people overcome speech anxiety.C. Providing free online courses for speakers.D. Attracting more people to public speaking.13. What does paragraph 2 focus on A. The advantages of exposure therapy.B. The types of VR settings on the platform.C. The working principle of the platform.D. The development process of the platform.14. What do the figures in paragraph 3 imply A. The platform is fruitful and works as planned.B. Practising in VR settings is better than in real life.C. Few teenagers can get the benefit from the platform.D. Breathing exercises help improve public speaking skills.15. What does Dr Matteo Cella think of the new platform A. Perfect and reliable. B. Promising but risky.C Outdated and ineffective. D. Creative but expensive.第二节(共5小题; 每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)根据短文内容, 从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项, 并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。Moving to a new country can be exciting, but it often comes with culture shock. The air was fresh, and the trees moved gently in the wind. It was a peaceful place, far from the noise of the city. We walked along a small path, enjoying the songs of birds. The sunlight came through the trees, making beautiful golden spots on the ground. It felt like we had stepped into a magical world. As we walked, I suddenly heard a weak chirping (鸟叫) sound. I stopped and listened carefully. The sound was coming from the bushes nearby. Curious, I moved closer and saw a small bird lying on the ground. Its feathers were messy, and one of its wings seemed to be injured. Its tiny black eyes were filled with fear and pain.Without thinking, I picked up the bird. It trembled (颤抖) in my hands. My parents came over and looked at the poor bird. “Let’s help it,” my mother said. We decided to make a temporary nest for the bind. My father found some dry leaves and soft grass, while my little sister carefully placed some feathers she had picked up along the way. We created a small, warm bed for the bird under a big tree. Then, I ran back to our car and took out our first-aid kit. With careful hands, I cleaned the small wound on its wing and wrapped it with a tiny piece of soft cloth. The bird seemed to feel better.Just as I thought everything was fine, dark clouds gathered in the sky. A storm was coming. I became worried about the little bird. If heavy rain fell, it might not survive the night. My father suggested taking it with us until the storm passed. I carefully placed the bird in a small basket with soft grass inside and carried it back to our cottage. That night, as the rain poured outside, I kept the bird close and fed it tiny grains my mother found in the kitchen. Slowly, it seemed to trust me. By morning, the storm had passed. The bird looked much stronger. We decided it was time to return it to the forest.注意:(1) 续写词数应为150 左右;(2) 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。We went back to the same place where we had found the bird and carefully placed it on the soft grass._______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________As we were about to leave, the two adult birds followed us for a short way._______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________NT20名校联合体4月高一年级期中考试英语注意事项:1. A. As soon as it touched the ground, it shook its wings a little. Just then, we saw two adult birds fly down from the trees. They chirped loudly and landed beside the little bird. One of them gently touched the small bird with its beak, as if to encourage it to move. The little bird slowly stood up and joined the adults. We watched quietly, happy to see the little bird back with its family, knowing we had helped it survive. As we were about to leave, the two adult birds followed us for a short way. They stayed close, moving around us and chirping softly. It was as though they were saying thank you for saving their child. I couldn’t help but smile, feeling a warmth in my heart. It reminded me of how even small acts of kindness can make a big difference. Sometimes, a little care and attention can change everything. Just like the bird, every small thing we do can help those we love, and together, we can create something beautiful. (159 words) 展开更多...... 收起↑ 资源预览
