Some people are worried about the effect that social media has on the lives of young people. The following text was written by a reporter: He tried to find out whether social media has a positive or negative effect on children.
Social media websites are communities where users can share photos and talk to each other online. They are very popular—millions of people use social media every day. Although some people think social media is a positive thing, many are worried about the negative effects it can have on young people.
James, a 15-year-old student, thinks that social media has many benefits. “I get very nervous when I talk to people in real life—I find it so much easier to express myself when I use social media. Another advantage is that I hardly ever forget anyone’s birthday now because I can look it up online!” Lots of users agree that social media helps young people stay connected to their friends and make new friends from around the world.
However, social media also has many problems. Social media may help young people find friends, but it also makes it easier for bullies to hurt them. Some parents believe that social media makes it harder for families to spend time together. They say their children are so crazy about social media that they ignore(忽视) the rest of their family. Many teachers think social media can distract(使某人分心) their students from schoolwork.
There is no doubt that social media has some problems, and it is very important to avoid spending too much time online. However, generally speaking, social media can be a positive thing for young people. It is a way for nervous people to make friends and for young people to stay connected.

At the 2025 Spring Festival Gala, 16 robots wowed hundreds of millions of viewers. Wang Xingxing, their “boss” and the founder of Unitree Robotics, became an overnight star.
Wang didn't use to be a “star”student. He had trouble with English and often failed English tests. Yet, he loved building small machines and creating new things. When he studied robotics in college, his talent finally found its voice. Today, the
man who couldn't shine in English has made the world amazed at Chinese robotics.
Wang's story proves that the Bucket Theory (木桶理论) is not always the case. According to the theory, the amount of water a bucket can hold depends on its shortest board. However, Wang focused his strengths on robotics, kept trying and created new possibilities.
In fact, everyone has their own advantages. But how can you discover them Let’s start by thinking about what you enjoy and what comes naturally to you. For example, if you love drawing, try joining an art club or taking a design course. Also, try new activities, and you might uncover some hidden talents. Maybe you've never tried programming before, but after a workshop, probably you will realize you have a gift for it. Finally, never stop learning: it opens doors to new interests and skills.

Life has a way of shaping us. Life can make you doubt or question your purpose. These are thoughts that I have had in my head for many years. Poetry prepares me for my purpose. My purpose is poetry.
In my journey towards purpose, poetry is my safety net. I started writing poems at the age of 5. By 13, I had written quite a lot of poems. Poetry was my escape (解脱) from being bullied by my classmates when studying in an American country school. They bullied me because of the way I looked. This bullying gave me low self-respect. Poetry was my way to be seen, be heard and be known.
For each important moment in my life, I wrote poetry. In difficult times, I wrote poetry. I connect with poetry on a deep level. It helped me get away from the pain. However, writing poetry couldn’t support me. So I turned to teaching instead.
While living in China, my job was an English teacher. I helped teach two classes. The two Chinese teachers I worked with gave me advice on how to teach the students English. The students’ needs of studying decided what I needed to do in the classroom. With challenging situations like this, I kept on writing poetry. I wrote down my feelings. I drew pictures of the real world. I accepted a new me. I learnt to think about things with confidence. My relationship with poetry grew over time. Poetry stayed in the depths of my soul (灵魂) .
There is nothing stopping you. The only person standing in your way is yourself. You have the power. Keep going. Keep believing. Remember that your hard work is not in vain. Go for it! Your purpose is waiting for you!
( )12. Why did the writer say poetry is her safety net
A. Because it was a way for her to make friends.
B. Because it made her popular among her classmates.
C. Because it gave her a sense of achievement.
D. Because it helped her get away from the pain.
( )13. Which is the right order of the following events
① The writer started writing poems.
② The writer worked in China as an English teacher.
③ The writer’s relationship with poetry grew over time.
④ The writer was bullied and she wrote lots of poems to escape.
A. ①④③② B. ②④③① C. ①④②③ D. ②④①③
( )14. What does the underlined phrase “in vain” mean
A. Important. B. Necessary. C. Useless. D. Successful.
( )15. What’s the main idea of the passage
A. Failure is the mother of success. B. Work hard to discover your purpose.
