Down House, home of Charles Darwin:
Fun fact
Charles Darwin, his wife, Emma, and their children lived at Down House for 40 years from 1838. Several rooms appear as if the family still live here: with croquet sets thrown into an under-stairs cupboard, a half-played game of backgammon on a side table and Emma’s knitting(毛线) left on a chair in the drawing room. Upstairs, an exhibition showcases Darwin’s voyage aboard HMS Beagle, including a reconstruction of his cabin. Outside, visitors can explore the sheltered gardens which Darwin used as an open-air laboratory, and the greenhouse in which he planted rare plants and devised botanical experiments.
No room at Down House escaped Darwin’s experiments. In the drawing room he once placed a jar of earthworms on the grand piano to see whether they could hear.
Getting there
A 15-minute drive from the A21/Farnborough. Free parking. The R8 bus from Orpington stops nearby (except Sundays) or the 146 bus from Bromley North and South terminates (终点站) in Downe village, half a mile from the property. The nearest railway stations are Chelsfield or Orpington, about four miles away.
Value for money
It’s £12 (adult), £7.20 (child), or £31.30 (family with 2 adults). Under 5s go free.
Opening hours
Open daily 10am-6pm from 30 March to 30 September; daily 10 a.m. — 5 p.m. between 1 to 31 October. Opening times vary through the winter (check website for details).

After their three children grew up and left home, Margaret Thompson and her husband, Kenneth, stretched their legs together on walking holidays in Switzerland. In Interlaken, year after year, they would head up the mountain and watch the paragliders (空中滑翔) launch themselves into the sky. Back in town, in a large park, they watched them return to earth. “Some day I’d love to do that,” Thompson told Kenneth.
But there was always so much to do in Interlaken. So she continued to watch the gliders take flight and land. Kenneth died in 2005. Eleven years later, and three decades after those walking holidays, Thompson finally took to the skies herself, in a paraglider with an instructor. Thompson was 80.
Recently, Thompson heard from an instructor that grown men, when airborne, sometimes cry and beg to be brought down. But what she remembers is “feeling free. You feel weightless. It’s quite windy. It blows you around. You sail along and look around you, and see all the toy houses down below. You feel like you are up in heaven somewhere there, watching everyone down below.”
Thirty years seems a long time to hold on to a dream. “It was,” she says. Why did it take so long “I wanted to do it, but I felt somebody should benefit from it.” She did not think of just enjoying the experience “I don’t think so. There had to be a cause at the end of it all,” she says. With her first paraglide, she raised £1,500 for Moorfields eye hospital in London, most of it with the aid of social clubs run by the Presbyterian church she regularly attends.
Is she scared of getting older “Fear No. People say: ‘Isn’t getting old awful ’ I say: ‘No. You are free to do more things that you want to do.”
Thompson felt no fear paragliding. “I mean, you sort of say to yourself: Well, if anything happens to me now, I’m OK. People might worry about falling, it being the end of them. But that didn’t bother me at all. When it’s your time, it’s your time. No matter where you are.”
24.Why didn’t Thompson take up paragliding after her children left home
A.She was engaged. B.She preferred walking.

26.Why could Thompson hold on to her dream for three decades
A.She got support from social clubs. B.She wanted to make it meaningful.
C.She hoped to contribute to the church. D.She had a good cause to experience fun.
27.What’s Thompson’s attitude towards falling
A.Terrified. B.Helpless. C.Calm. D.Doubtful.

What makes a person a giver or a taker The idea of “give vs. take” takes shape in all interactions and relationships of our lives. We’re either giving advice, making time for people, or we’re on the receiving end. We keep changing between the two based on different situations on a daily basis, if not an hourly one.
According to Adam Grant, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, most people are matchers. They make careful observations on takers and make it a point for them to pay something back. They hate to see people who act so generously towards others not receive any rewards. Actually, most matchers will try hard to promote and support givers so that they can get the good they should get.
Is there a gender (性别) factor that plays a part in this
A study led by Hannah Riley Bowles, a professor at Harvard University, focused on this question. She asked 200 senior managers to sit down in pairs where one person would act as the boss and the other as a worker to discuss salary promotions. Male “workers” asked for an average salary of $146k while the females asked for only $141k. But why did they not bargain (讨价还价) as hard as the men Simply because they were more likely to be givers.
As a woman, I do enjoy the act of giving up my time, my knowledge, and my care and attention to others. I don’t expect anything in return, but I do tend to pull myself away when I feel like I’m being taken for granted (被认为理所当然). I also tend to get upset when I see a loved one’s continuous actions of kindness go unnoticed. So, it’s safe to say I’m 50% giver, 35% matcher and 15% taker.
I do know someone, however, who is 99% giver. They’re constantly giving their time, sharing valuable ideas and going out of their way for everyone who crosses their path. Although they’ve changed the lives of many people, they rarely see any of it returned. But the universe is slowly repaying them; they’re now extremely successful, well known for what they do.
28.Which can best describe the matchers
A.They hate receiving rewards.
B.They see no point in giving generously.
C.They can put up with unfair treat.
D.They want to balance giving and taking.
29.What did Hannah’s study focus on
A.The role of giving and taking in jobs.
B.The gender difference in giving and taking.
C.The role of men and women in society.
D.The salary difference between women and men.
30.What can we know about the author from paragraph 5
A.She is a complete giver.
B.She hates wasting time.
C.She takes helping others for granted.
D.She gives herself an honest assessment (评价).
31.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A.Giving is a short path to success.
B.Sharing is a great human quality.
C.No good deed goes undone.
D.Only the selfless can be fearless.

TripAdvisor, one of the world’s most popular travel sites, has recently announced that it will stop selling tickets to attractions that contribute to the captivity (囚禁) of whales and dolphins. The ban is an addition of the company’s 2016 policy that prohibits ticket sales to attractions where travelers come into physical contact with captive wild animals.
“Whales and dolphins do not grow well in limited captive environments,” Dermot Halpin, a TripAdvisor spokesperson, said in an interview. “We believe the current generation of whales and dolphins in captivity should be the last, and we look forward to seeing this position adopted more widely throughout the travel industry.”
The ban applies to all attractions and aquariums (水族馆) that have whales and dolphins for public display. “Our aim is not only to prevent future generations of whales and dolphins from being raised in captivity, but also to encourage the industry to move toward other models, like seaside reserves, that will better provide for the needs of the current captive population, ” Halpin said.
Not everyone supported the decision. SeaWorld, a top attraction in Florida, said the move ignores the needs and preferences of the general public. “TripAdvisor’s new position ignores the educational value of zoos and aquariums. TripAdvisor should give its customers good information and trust them to make well-informed decisions,” said a SeaWorld spokesman. “SeaWorld always takes good care of all animals, including whales and dolphins. We will continue to advance education and animal protection efforts.”
TripAdvisor — which serves an average of about 490 million travelers a month, according to its website — said the new policy will go into full effect by the end of the year.
32.Why does the TripAdvisor make the new announcement
A.To attract more visitors.
B.To increase ticket prices.
C.To better protect wild animals.
D.To compete with other companies.
33.What do the underlined words “this position” in paragraph 2 refer to
A.Ignoring the educational value of attractions.
B.Calling on tourists to care for animals in attractions.
C.Preventing travelers having physical contact with animals.
D.Stopping selling tickets to attractions with captive animals.
34.What does TripAdvisor suggest the travel industry do
A.Take better care of all animals
B.Continue animal protection efforts.
C.Create natural reserves by the seaside.
D.Build more zoos and aquariums.
35.What is SeaWorld’s attitude toward TripAdvisor’s decision
A.Supportive. B.Positive.
C.Objective. D.Dissatisfied.

For weeks, people in Oak Town had been anticipating an easy future. The town council planned to cut down the landmark of the town, an old maple tree, to build a parking lot to meet the locals’ needs. However, a group of teenagers were determined to stop it. All of them had grown up in the town, playing under the tree and climbing the tree — its branches held their childhood secrets, from first crushes to lost teeth. But when they tried to convince the neighbors at the community meeting, their voice was drowned in the crowd’s indifference. “Progress is inevitable, kids,” Mr. Hart, the mayor, who also grew up in the town, just shrugged and walked away.
Disappointed as they were, they continued to try to make their voice heard by the locals. They worked together, put up their handmade “Save Our Tree” posters and called on more people to join them, though most people ignored them — except Mrs. Rodriguez, the librarian, who proposed, “The most powerful tool to strike others is the inner feelings, not external language.”
Her suggestion gave them an idea — they turned to those whose life was always in the shade of the old tree. They wanted to explore more stories behind the tree and the close ties to the tree. After joint efforts, now they got numbers of rich and colorful stories and memories. Mrs. Jenkins showed them an old wedding photo taken under its golden leaves; Mr. Chen let them record the story of his fruit cart, which had stood in the tree’s shade for years; Mr. Tomas recalled the scene where he and his girlfriend sat on the bench under the tree, talking about the future; Grandpa Nelson even called it the soul of the town.
The night before the final council vote, these teenagers got together under the tree, discussing again how to persuade the locals the next day. Just then, Mr. Hart came up, “Save your breath, kids. Vote’s tomorrow.” He casually waved the book in his hand and strode away. Suddenly, one teenager bent down and picked up a photo. It was a picture of a boy planting a sapling (幼苗). On the back, someone had written: “A perfect way to celebrate Hart’s 10th birthday.”

(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

【原文】We people are easy targets for flu in every season. It makes us wonder why we can’t find a way to totally get rid of it The answer is that there’re actually hundreds of kinds of viruses around us. We can’t see and touch them, and we never know which one we will get infected with, so it’s impossible to find a cure for each one. When a virus attacks our body, it’s hard to detach ourselves from it. We will feel awful because we can’t breathe well. The virus raises temperature of our bodies, and makes us get flu. But the heat of our body is killing the virus at the same time. Besides, we may also have a sore throat or a runny nose to prevent the virus from invading our cells. Different people have different symptoms. In China, some people might eat nutritious food to improve their health and fitness, some people only take hot baths and drink warm water, and some people take medicines. However, there’s one interesting thing to notice. Some experts say taking medicines when we have flu is harmful to our health. The reason why the virus stays in our body longer is that our body can’t develop a way to fight against and kill it.

Actually, most matchers will try hard to promote and support givers so that they can get the good they should get.

I also tend to get upset when I see a loved one’s continuous actions of kindness go unnoticed. So, it’s safe to say I’m 50% giver, 35% matcher and 15% taker.

67. The big day came and almost all the locals came to vote. As the council prepared to cast votes, the teenagers stepped forward, presenting old photos and handwritten journals. One by one, they shared the stories they’d collected — Mrs. Jenkins’ trembling voice describing her sweet memories beneath autumn leaves, Mr. Chen’s laughter echoing as he recalled children stealing peaches from his cart. When they revealed the photo of young Hart planting the sapling, gasps rippled through the crowd. The mayor froze, his stern expression crumbling as memories flooded back. “That tree...” he murmured, touching the faded image, “I’d forgotten... My father said roots grow stronger when they’ve weathered storms.”
All the audience fell into silence when the teenagers shared the stories. Slowly, Mr. Hart rose, guilt written all over his face, “This tree isn’t just wood and leaves. We nearly destroy our own history.” His words trembled, sparking a wave of whispers. Then, Mr. Hart proposed a new plan: preserving the tree as a memorial park while building the parking lot on the empty field behind the library. Without any incident, all the locals voted in favor of the proposal. A smile broke across Mr. Hart’s face as he declared, “The tree stays!” Cheers erupted instantly. The teenagers exchanged smiles, knowing their stories had woven the town’s heart together again.
