My name is Will Charouhis. My hometown is Miami, in the U.S. state of Florida. The city is known for its warm weather and many beautiful beaches. It’s very popular with tourists. However, scientists say it’s in trouble. Because of climate change (气候变化), the sea level is rising. As a coastal city, Miami will suffer badly. By 2070, the city will probably be under two feet of water.
Life will be hard then. I know this because I once experienced the effects of climate change. It was September 2017. Hurricane Irma (飓风“厄玛”) hit Florida. It caused serious flooding in Miami. My city was almost completely under water. For days, I thought about what I could do. How could I help to prevent this from happening again
I became interested in mangroves. These trees grow in or near water. They are good at taking in greenhouse gases from the air. They can also protect coastal cities against rising seas. I started the “A Million Mangroves” project. I ask people to help protect mangroves.
Three years ago, the COVID-19 pandemic (疾病大流行) shut down the world. I couldn’t go to school. Neither could I spend time with my friends indoors. But I was able to spend months working along Florida’s coastlines. I planted more than six miles of new mangroves.
I’ll continue to work hands-on and teach people about the importance of protecting trees. It’s useless to just be afraid of climate change. Turn your tear into action. We can all do something to save our planet.

Ma Baoli is a pilot with the Dalian branch of China Southern Airlines, in Northeast China’s Liaoning Province. He has won the name “poetic captain” for his passion for poems.
While flying over the Yellow River, he thinks of this verse: “① Do you not see the Yellow River come from the sky, rush into the sea, and never come back ” Above the Yangtze River, he recites (吟诵): ② “Wave after wave the Yangtze River roars east, sweeping away with it all our heroes.”

Most of the energy we use for heating, lighting, transportation and manufacturing (制造业) comes from fossil (化石) fuels. These are carbon-based fuels from oil, coal and natural gas.
There are three main disadvantages to using these fuels. Firstly, they are causing climate problems because of the greenhouse effect. When we burn fossil fuels they produce carbon dioxide which causes global warming. Secondly, when we have used up all our coal, oil and natural gas, we will have nothing left to burn. Thirdly, they are not very efficient. The internal combustion engine (内燃机) that we use in most cars, trucks and buses, for example, is only about14% efficient.
Scientists are working on another fuel-hydrogen (氢). There are a couple of advantages to using hydrogen as a fuel. Firstly, because two-thirds of the Earth’s surface is water and water is made of hydrogen and oxygen. There is an almost unlimited supply of hydrogen. Secondly, burning hydrogen does not cause global warming. Thirdly, it is much more efficient than carbon-based fuels.
Unfortunately, there are problems with hydrogen at the present time. We don’t know how to separate it from water cheaply, and there is difficulty of storing it. It can be stored under pressure but high pressure tanks are far from safe. It can also be stored as a liquid but only at extremely low temperatures. It seems likely, therefore, that there will have to be a completely new technology before hydrogen replaces fossil fuels. Solving these problems is an urgent matter. Although China, India and Australia have huge amounts of cheap coal, and there are still large oil and gas reserves (储藏量) elsewhere, the effects on the planet’s climate will be worse if they are still used.
25.________ isn’t carbon-based fuel.

As more Americans try to have healthy lifestyles and protect the environment, the idea of growing their own food has become popular among city people. Not long ago, a city gardening meeting, Rooting DC, took place in Washington, D.C. Many organizations and people got together to support the food movement.
Katie, one of the main organizers of Rooting DC, says people can get free seeds if they take part in the one-day gardening meeting. According to Katie, the aim of Rooting D.C. is to teach people gardening and develop more gardens all across the city.
Katie says, “People realize that gardening is a way to bring healthy foods into their lives. They become interested in gardening because of that. Growing worry about the environment has also worked. We not only grow food, but protect the environment through gardening.”
Several organizations that encourage school children to grow fruits and vegetables in healthy ways also ran classes at Rooting D.C. Scott, a college student, who came with his friends, says, “I am really interested in gardening. Certainly I know how to find local food, but I want to grow the food on my own and encourage others to do so.”
Ann came to get information for her daughter. “We started a garden together at the school. I need to find out more resources to support school gardens.”
Brian, a computer teacher, says gardening is a hobby that he can enjoy with his friends. “I am looking forward to getting some seeds since I need new seeds to exchange with my friends. We’d like to see different plants grow in our gardens.”
The organizers hope that city gardening can become more and more popular not only in their area but also around the country and even across the world.

Turning rubbish into new earth
My father is a quiet man. He has his thoughts, but he usually keeps them to himself. There is one thing that really gets him excited. Just say the word “rubbish” to him! Or I should say, he is keen on solving the rubbish problem!
“We have become a ‘throw-away’ society,” he says. “We buy and buy, and then we throw it away. We can’t keep doing this. Rubbish is everybody’s problem.” My father doesn’t just talk about it though. When he sees a problem, he tries to find a solution.
Last year, my father decided to do something about all the wasted food we were throwing away. One family makes nearly 500 pounds of food waste each year. We throw away the potato skins and the apple cores (核) when we finish with them. Imagine how they collect in the large area!
However, there is something that we can do to reuse rubbish. For example, if we carefully deal with food waste, it can be changed from rubbish to a rich, dark earth known as compost (肥料). This compost can be added to vegetable gardens to make the plants grow really well.
“I bought a compost bin today.” Dad said at dinner one night. “From now on, instead of throwing away all our food waste, we will put it in the compost bin. Mother Nature will slowly turn it from rubbish into earth.”
It took a while to get used to it, but soon, we were taking our food waste to the compost bin. In three months, we found it full of rich compost material!

Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题):
Pu Cuifen, a villager from Yunnan Province, experienced that an elephant visited his house two years ago. The elephants were harmful to no one, but had com and beans on the farm. The villagers lost nearly 50,000yuan. Earlier than that, villagers would drive away the elephants to protect their crops, which made the animals angry and led to human injuries or deaths.
Now the government has helped to pay the money for the crops damaged (损害) by elephants. Such things will help protect the interests of farmers and elephants. The government has also created “dining halls” for the wild elephants to grow their favorite food, such as elephant grass and bamboo. Villagers now simply leave the elephants alone.
Yunnan Province is not the only example of protecting wild animals. In Tibet, Migmar used to be a hunter, but now has become a rescuer at the wildlife rescue station of Qomolangma. He and his friends take turns to go around to check there’s no trouble or danger for wild animals every day. The wildlife rescue station was set up in 2019. From then on, they have saved 17 wild animals. During this period, they learned to tie up the animals and clean their wounds, and set them free into the wild when they got well again. “Animals don’t talk, but I can feel their trust. We should protect them,” said Migmar.
Examples of taking care of wild animals appear more around us. From damage to protection, people see more changing on human-wildlife relations. Even the simplest change and action can make a change to the world.
66.The elephants were harmless to people in Pu’s village, weren’t they
67.What happened when the villagers drove away the elephants
68.Why did the government create “dining halls” for the wild elephants
69.What topic do the two examples have in common
70.How do you feel about Migmar and his friends Please give your reason(s).
When I was six years old, Grandpa sent me into the woods to gather pecans (山核桃). Pecan picking was quite difficult to me and my little basket was only half full. Just then, something caught my eye. A large squirrel (松鼠) was a few feet away. I watched as he picked up a pecan, hurried to a tree and disappeared in a large hole in the tree. A moment later, he jumped out and climbed down to the ground to pick up another nut. Once again, he took the pecan back to his hiding place.
I ran to the tree and looked into the hole. It was filled with pecans! Golden pecans were right there for taking. I scooped (抱起) all of them into my basket. Now it was full! I was so proud of myself. I couldn’t wait to show Grandpa all the pecans. He looked into the basket and said, “Well, how did you find so many ” I told him the truth.
Grandpa congratulated me on how smart I’d been in observing the squirrel and his habit. Then he did something that surprised me. He handed the basket back to me and put his arm gently around my shoulders.
“That squirrel worked very hard to gather his winter supply of food,” he said, “Now that all of his pecans are gone, don’t you think that little squirrel will survive the cold winter ”
“I didn’t think about that.” I said.
“I know,” Grandpa said, “But a good person should never take advantage of someone else’s hard work.”
I understood. After supper, I did the right thing.

Instead of playing with toys, Yang loved making models himself when he was little.
His parents bought him model cars and airplanes, but he preferred using plastic bottles to make his own.
When he started middle school, Yang began putting even more effort into making model air-planes. Once, he locked himself up in his room to build a 5-meter-long wooden hang glider. He covered the frame with his bed sheet as he couldn’t afford the proper material for the wings. Yang wanted to try flying the glider by jumping off a hill, but his father found out about his plan and thought it was too dangerous. So his father destroyed the plane.
But this didn’t stop Yang from building model airplanes.

John Wesley Powell
Every time I go whitewater rafting, I think of an explorer named John Wesley Powell who was an amazing figure in the American West. Powell was fearless and thought nothing of hopping in a boat and rowing down an unknown river. Along the way, he studied geology, plants, and wildlife, teaching himself much about the natural world.
In 1860, Powell joined the army in the Civil War. He was injured and lost his right arm. When the wound was cured, he went back into battle! In 1865, he retired as a major (上校).
Powell took a teaching position as professor of geology even though he had never gone to college himself. During this time, he began to develop a daring plan. He wanted to explore the Grand Canyon by rafting the Colorado River. No one had done such a thing before.
In May of 1869, Powell set out with ten men on the Green River in Wyoming for a ten-month trip. Everyone who saw them leave thought they would be done for.
No wonder! They were facing the unknown with every bend of the river. No one knew what rapids (急流) lay ahead or how dangerous they’d be. But Powell refused to give up. He had courage and carefulness. He did what he set out to do. He got a river’s-eye view of one of the most unbelievable natural formations (构造) on Earth. And he lived to tell the tale.

Just before midnight on July the 31st, 1997, some skiers returning to their hotel in the village of Thredbo heard a huge sound. The frightened skiers rushed to where the noise came from and found that part of the hillside above the village had dropped down onto two buildings in which nineteen people had been sleeping.
As soon as the day broke, rescue workers began digging for people alive. They used hand tools because they were worried that machines might hurt anyone trapped (围困) under the rocks. For two days, rescue workers never stopped digging. On Thursday evening they found the first body. The next day they found two more. They had almost given up hope of finding anyone alive when, at 5: 37 a. m. on Saturday morning, a special machine they were using found a small movement.
Immediately someone shouted to tell the workers to be silent. Everyone stopped talking, and no one moved. A fireman lay down over to a hole in a large piece of concrete (混凝土) and shouted down, “Can anyone hear me ” “I can hear you,” came the reply.
Worried that their digging could start more rocks falling down the mountain, rescue workers began carefully taking away the rocks and dirt on top of the trapped man. By 10 o’clock, a small hole had been made. At 10: 10 a. m. , rescue workers sent two tubes down through the hole, one carrying warm air and the other a warm drink. Then a microphone was passed through the hole so that they could talk to the man.
For the next seven hours, two workers talked to the trapped man while others slowly and carefully worked to free him. They found out that his name was Stuart Diver. By the time he was found, he was cold and hungry and had almost given up any hope of being rescued.

Sophia’s Big Day
It was Sophia Taylor’s big day. As a reporter for her school newspaper, she would interview Ramon Fuller today, the star player for the Green-port football team.
To Sophia, this meant a lot. She planned to be a professional football player, just like Ramon. Sophia’s dad, Dr. Philip Taylor, said YES to her but only allowed her to train after she finished her homework. “Work hard in all areas, and many things are possible,” he often said seriously.
At school, Sophia went over the questions again and again before the big hour came. When she finally saw Fuller, Sophia was surprised to find he didn’t look like the exciting player she saw on TV. He seemed steady (稳重的) in a suit. For some reason, he reminded Sophia of her brother.
Sophia began to ask Fuller how he got started in sports.
“My talent showed early,” Fuller continued to tell Sophia how he won competitions and became famous. “But I hurt my knee in my last year of high school, That was when I met my hero.”
“Who was that ” Sophia was interested.
“Dr. Philip Taylor,” Fuller smiled.
“My dad ” Sophia shouted, “Why was he your hero ”
Fuller told Sophia how her father encouraged him to do his best in football after treating his knee. But with four operations on the knee, he couldn’t imagine playing football for long. Then Dr Taylor advised him to explore more possibilities.
“That’s why I started studying medicine in the university,” Fuller continued. “When I retire from football, I want to be a doctor like your father.”
“But you are rich enough,” Sophia felt curious. “You don’t have to work.”
“It’s not about money,” Fuller said. “I want to achieve more with my life. Work hard in all areas. And many things are possible.”

When I was ten years old, Mother found a dog by the roadside that had been hit by a car. She immediately took him to a vet as one of his back legs was badly hurt. His leg took some time to get better. Since Mother could not find the dog’s owner, we kept him and named him Chip. Chip and Mother were always together. He was Mother’s shadow and followed her everywhere. Whenever she left the house, he would whine sadly.
One day, on our way to my grandparents’ house for dinner. Mother stopped at a minimart. “Mary, let’s buy some fruits for Grandma and Grandpa and a snack for Chip.” Mother told me as she got out of the car. I went along to take the chance to buy an ice cream for myself. Soon, we were on the road again.
Half an hour passed when mother asked suddenly, “Where is Chip ” Chip was a quiet dog, so nobody realized that he was not in the backseat. None of us remembered seeing him out of the car at the minimart.
It was dark by then and raining very heavily. Worried sick, Mother decided to drive back to the minimart. When she stopped in front of the store, she was shocked. There sat Chip, soaking wet, with water dripping off his long ears. Mother rushed out of the car and quickly flew towards our pet.
“________!” the minimart owner exclaimed when she saw us hugging and patting chip. “He must have been waiting for you to return and has not moved from this spot even though it was raining.”
