How to Take Your “Before” and “After” Photos
Suppose you’re about to start a weight-loss or body-shaping journey that will change your body and your life, nothing shows the results of this experience better than a set of “before” and “after” photos. Whether you just want to keep them as a personal reminder, or share your story with the world, prepare to be an expert to get high-quality photos!
Camera, Photographer, and Location
It’s best to use a digital camera.
If you have a camera stand, that’s great; otherwise, try to get someone to take your photos—don’t worry, he or she doesn’t have to be a professional photographer!
Choose a well-lit area in front of a plain wall. The simpler the background is, the more attention will be on you and your transformation.
Dress Code (密码)
A swimsuit or form-fitting workout clothes work best. You should show as much of your body as you’re comfortable with, but please keep it appropriate for public consumption.
Photo Composition
Take full-body photos and make sure your face can be clearly seen.
Try to take the photos from different angles, such as a front view and a side view.
Whatever you do, consistency is key!
Ideally, your “before” and “after” photos will show you doing the same poses, wearing the same clothes, in the same place both before and after your transformation. This way, your body is the only thing that can be seen changing.
Timing
Make sure to take the photos at the beginning, during, and end of your program so that you can see your progress over time. If you’re doing a 90-day program, for example, you could take photos on Day 1, and then on Day 30, Day 60, and Day 90 until you’re done.
21. What is the aim of a set of “before” and “after” photos
A. To record a touching story. B. To remember a trip.
C. To share a workout method. D. To show a transformation.
22. What is needed before taking “before” and “after” photos
A. A plain setting. B. A fashionable dress.
C. A high-tech camera. D. A well-trained photographer.
23. Which of the following can probably guarantee high-quality “before” and “after” photos
A. Taking photos every day. B. Adopting a unique angle.
C. Making your face visible. D. Wearing a consistent smile.
B
The following is part of an interview between Professor Bernard Feringa (a Nobel Price winner) and a CNN reporter.
Q: You often say that universities should be playgrounds. How can we make sure that this is a case
A: I’m a strong believer in challenging students at all levels — to think, to discover and to go beyond the current knowledge. The universities have a special role here, because academic training and science should go beyond the current horizon. I think that we shouldn’t forget that we shouldn’t train our students for today or tomorrow; we should train them for 10 to 20 years from now. Because then they will be the innovators in our society, and they will be the persons that make a difference. Train our students for future means that they have to be able to surpass the border of our current knowledge. This is what I mean with playground. I mean that you have sufficient space to think, to discover and to be free to make mistakes, but in particular to make the next steps, be creative and not limited by what should be done. A lot of things happen by accident and suddenly you get a major breakthrough or new insight. Schools should encourage students to ask questions and be creative.
Q: What is it that you like so much about teaching
A: I really enjoy the transfer of the beauty of knowledge: insights, questions, things that we don’t know, or the limitations of what we know. I never get tired of my job. I think that you share with your students the opportunity to transfer some knowledge, but also get a lot of things back by asking questions and discussing. Across all fields, from natural sciences to humanities, you have knowledge and insights built upon generations and decades. At the universities we have to transfer a lot of knowledge and teach students the basic skills and techniques. But it’s also our duty to go beyond that — to ask them questions about what we don’t know and what improvements we can make for the future. Doing surgery in the hospital now might be taken over by robots in the future. How are we going to deal with that Or will we be able to make fuel for airplanes These are challenging and tough questions but to share those with the students is really nice. Most of all, I think the beauty of knowledge and the excitement of insights and discoveries is fantastic.
24. What does the professor agree to
A. Students are bound to surpass their present teachers.
B. Students are expected to be different future citizens.
C. Students are supposed to have more academic training.
D. Students should definitely be encouraged to be challenged.
25. What does “plavground” mean to Bernard Feringa
A. An area for physical activities. B. An area for extra-curricular experiments.
C. An area for bold exploration. D. An area for academic improvements.
26. Which saying can best describe the reason for the professor’s devotion to teaching
A. He who teaches learns. B. Work makes a workman.
C. Never too old to learn. D. Truth never fears investigation.
27. How can you describe Professor Bernard Feringa
A. Respectable and reliable. B. Innovative and devoted.
C. Generous and sharp-minded. D. Independent and professional.
C
Today’s Brussels sprouts (孢子甘蓝) taste better than you might remember from childhood, and that is because a new variety has replaced the original vegetable. You can thank plant breeders for the change. Modern breeders, armed with new gene-editing technology, are looking to reproduce Brussels sprouts’ reinvention.
In the late 1990s, scientists discovered specific chemicals which made Brussels sprouts taste bitter. Plant breeders started growing old seeds, previously abandoned due to poor yields (产量), to look for tastier versions with lower levels of these specific chemicals. Then they crossed these delicious but low-yield plants with high-yield individuals until they found a version that made plenty of tasty sprouts, transforming the vegetable from a bitter pill into a popular dish.
But other vegetables haven’t fared as well. That’s because most breeding decisions favor plant traits (特性) that matter to vegetable growers, not vegetable eaters. For instance, disease resistance is probably the major focus these days of most breeding programs because that prevents the farmer from growing the crop. The taste of vegetables is ignored.
People, however, are now becoming interested in prioritizing the taste of vegetables thanks in part to new genetic technology. “There’s never been a better time to be a fruit breeder or a vegetable breeder because we have more tools and techniques,” says Susan Brown, an apple breeder at Cornell University.
Some companies are beginning to use those tools to deal with the challenge of developing tastier vegetables. One company, Pairwise, is fighting the same compounds that troubled Brussels sprouts. But this time researchers are improving the flavor of salad greens.
All vegetable growers hope that more flavorful products on store shelves will convince people to consume the recommended allowances (定量) of fruits and vegetables — and do so better than decades of nutritional guidance have. “Don’t waste your time talking about trying to educate people to eat better,” said Harry Klee, a professor who specializes in tomato breeding. “Just give them products that taste better and that they want to eat.”
28. Why did plant breeders grow old Brussels sprout seeds
A. To study why Brussels sprouts are bitter. B. To research the specific chemicals.
C. To select high-yielding products. D. To find the less bitter versions.
29. What does the underlined word “fared” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Survived. B. Emerged. C. Mushroomed. D. Succeeded.
30. What can we learn from Susan Brown’s words in paragraph 4
A. The breeding techniques are booming.
B. The breeding techniques need no improvement.
C. The breeders are struggling to develop new species.
D. The breeders should develop new genetic technology.
31. How can fruits and vegetables be consumed more according to Harry Klee
A. By enhancing the taste. B. By improving the nutrients.
C. By making them more accessible. D. By telling people the benefits.
D
The Painting Fool is one of a growing number of computer programs which, as their makers claim, possess creative talents. Classical music by an artificial composer has had audiences overjoyed, and even tricked them into believing a human was behind the score. Artworks painted by a robot have sold for thousands of dollars and been hung in prestigious (有声望的) galleries. And software has been built which creates art that could not have been imagined by the programmer.
Human beings are the only species to perform complicated creative acts regularly. If we can break this process down into computer code, where does that leave human creativity “This is a question at the very core of humanity,” says Geraint Wiggins, a computational creativity researcher at Goldsmiths, University of London. “It scares a lot of people. They are worried that it is taking something special away from what it means to be human.”
To some extent, we are all familiar with computerized art. The question is: where does the work of the artist stop and the creativity of the computer begin Consider one of the oldest machine artists, Aaron, a robot that has had paintings exhibited in London’s Tate Modern and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Aaron can pick up a paintbrush and paint on canvas on its own. Impressive perhaps, but it is still little more than a tool to realize the programmer’s own creative ideas.
Simon Colton, the designer of the Painting Fool, is keen to make sure his creation doesn’t attract the same criticism. Unlike earlier “artists” such as Aaron, the Painting Fool only needs minimal direction and can come up with its own concepts by going online for material. The software runs its own web searches and trawls through social media sites. It is now beginning to display a kind of imagination too, creating pictures from scratch. One of its original works is a series of blurry landscapes, depicting (描绘) trees and sky. While some might say they have a mechanical look, Colton argues that such reactions arise from people’s double standards towards software-produced and human-produced art. After all, he says, consider that the Painting Fool painted the landscapes without referring to a photo. “If a child painted a new scene from its head, you’d say it has a certain level of imagination,” he points out. “The same should be true of a machine.” Software bugs can also lead to unexpected results. Some of the Painting Fool’s paintings of a chair came out in black and white, thanks to a technical glitch (小故障). This gives the work an eerie, ghostlike quality. Human artists like the renowned Ellsworth Kelly are praised for limiting their color palette (调色板)-so why should computers be any different
32. What is the writer suggesting about computer-produced works in the first paragraph
A. People’s acceptance of them can vary considerably.
B. A great deal of progress has already been attained in this field.
C. They have had more success in some artistic genres than in others.
D. The advances are not as significant as the public believes them to be.
33. According to Geraint Wiggins, why are many people worried by computer art
A. It is aesthetically inferior to human art. B. It may ultimately supersede human art.
C. It undermines a fundamental human quality. D. It will lead to a deterioration in human ability.
34. What is a key difference between Aaron and the Painting Fool
A. Its programmer’s background. B. Public response to its work.
C. The source of its subject matter. D. The technical standard of its output.
35. What point does Simon Colton make in the fourth paragraph
A. Software-produced art is often dismissed as childish and simplistic.
B. The same concepts of creativity should not be applied to all forms of art.
C. It is unreasonable to expect a machine to be as imaginative as a human being.
D. People tend to judge computer art and human art according to different criteria.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Over the past few decades, technology has advanced at an unprecedented rate, revolutionizing industries and shaping new ways of life. 36
According to the International Telecommunication Union, a key advocate of technological advancement, the rapid growth of technology has significantly improved the quality of life in numerous communities. It cites studies that show the integration of technology into daily lives has led to increased efficiency, more access to information, and even progress in healthcare in numerous regions. 37
Those who embrace technological progress argue that it creates new opportunities for individuals and businesses alike. For instance, farmers in remote areas can now access real-time market information and weather updates through smartphones, enabling them to make more informed decisions about their crops. Additionally, small businesses can expand their reach globally through online platforms. 38 They argue that while technology may bring benefits to some, it often expands the difference between the technologically informed and the digitally excluded. Studies conducted by organizations like the United Nations Development Programme reveal that many individuals, particularly those in developing regions or with limited resources, lag behind in accessing and utilizing technological advancements. 39
Furthermore, critics fear that the unchecked growth of technology may have negative impacts on society and the environment. For example, the rise of social media and the internet has led to an increase in cyberbullying, privacy concerns, and the spread of misinformation. Moreover, the overuse of technology may contribute to do-nothing lifestyles and other health issues.
One thing is certain about technological progress — it is an inevitable trend. The rapid pace of innovation and the widespread availability of technology make it impossible to turn back. 40
A. But how can we take control of technology to our advantage
B. The question arises: Is technological progress beneficial for all
C. This digital divide can lead to increased social and economic gaps.
D. However, critics of technological advancement hold a different view.
E. These advancements have been particularly evident in rural and underserved areas.
F. It ensures that the benefits of technological progress are shared equally across society.
G. The challenge now is finding ways to command the power of technology to benefit all.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
In the golden mist of late summer, Frank and John, two inseparable friends, set off on an adventure they had particularly planned for weeks: a camping trip by the river. The air was filled with excitement as they packed their backpacks with essentials—tents, cookers, and a map, though they were confident in their knowledge of the area, having explored its boundaries since childhood.
As the sun began its fall, casting long shadows across the green landscape, they arrived at their chosen spot—a quiet bend in the river, far from civilization’s noisiness. They set up camp, and the crackling of the campfire and the gentle lapping of water against the shore were their only companions. Under a starry sky, they shared stories and dreams, unaware that their comfortable escape was about to take a dangerous turn.
The following morning, as they ventured deeper into the woods to gather firewood, the sky, which had been clear and blue, turned frightening, with heavy clouds gathering. In the distance, a low, powerful, rolling thunder echoed through the valley, a warning they should have noticed. Not frightened, they continued, their laughter now was drowned out by the growing roar of the river.
It happened swiftly. A wall of water, caused by the storm, rushed down the river, catching them off guard. In a heartbeat, their return path was cut off, the once familiar place was transformed into a maze (迷宫) of rushing currents and mudslides. Panic rose within them, but Frank, always the calmer of the two, remembered a survival tip from his father: “When lost or in danger, stay put if possible, assess your resources, and think reasonably.”
With the river too dangerous to cross, they came back to higher ground, seeking shelter beneath a rocky overhang. As the rain pounded down, they gathered together, their spirits dampened but not defeated. John remembered another crucial lesson: using natural resources for survival. He suggested they start a fire using dry leaves and branches they had collected before the storm and they managed to light a small flame, providing warmth and a light of hope.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The new sunrise brought new challenges and opportunities for Frank and John to prove their courage. ______

M: Hello, Brian parks speaking.
W: Oh, hello, I’m calling about the ad for the car in the paper.
M: What would you like to know
W: It’s my brother Jeff who’s interested actually,
M: fine. It’s a mini and it’s grey. Doesn’t show the dirt.
W: Have you been the only owner
M: No, I’m the second one.
W: Now, about the price, I see you’ve got it down as 1250 pounds, so would you be prepared to go down to 1000
M: That’s really too low.
W: 1100
M: I might be able to go to that.

W: Well, the day after that.

Hello, everyone—this is your headmaster, Mr. Dodson, speaking. I’m sure you’ve all noticed the snowstorm has become worse since we arrived here at 8 a.m. The school staff and I apologize for not realizing how heavy this storm would be. It was reported that there would be 5 cm of snow. But indeed, we currently have double that amount, and it’s expected to become over 20 cm by three o’clock. So, what does that mean It will require classes to end now, at 11 o’clock. Lunch will still be served in the cafeteria; you may have it now. For senior students who have driven to school, you’re welcome to drive home, but please be careful. For everyone else, the school buses are coming at noon. You are advised to wait in the cafeteria until then. But please, for everyone in the school, call your parents to tell them what you’re doing. It’s quite a dangerous situation out there right now. And by this evening, we’ll have almost a meter of snow on the ground. Next, wait for an announcement from our school bus driver, Jamie Johnson. He will tell you more information about bus schedules and safety advice. Thanks, everyone—and please, stay safe out there.

【答案】21. D 22. A 23. C

【答案】28. D 29. D 30. A 31. A

【答案】
Good morning, everyone!
In my opinion, a role model is someone or something worth learning from and someone or something who inspires and guides others.
The most influential role model for me is Quan Hong Chan, who is a 14-year-old girl. She began to receive diving training in 2014, and won the gold medal in the 10-meter platform competition on August 5, 2021. It is her hard training that makes her so successful. She also has a strong will.
I think I should learn from her. She never gives up however hard the life is. And at the same time, she is also filial. Through her hard work and effort, she looks after her mother well.
Thank you for your listening.

【答案】
The new sun rise brought new challenges and opportunities for Frank and John to prove their courage. They crafted fishing hooks from bent wires found among their scattered belongings, cleverly attaching them to flexible branches to catch fish in the running river. The day was also marked by tireless efforts to signal for help, arranging branches and rocks into massive arrows that pointed toward their location, hoping these markers would catch the eye of a passing aircraft. Frank, with his keen observation skills, noticed patterns in the helicopter search patterns, suggesting they move closer to the riverbank during flyovers, increasing their chances of being spotted.
The next day, as hope was beginning to fade, a rescue helicopter appeared. The bright clothes they had hung between trees and the persistent smoke from their controlled fire served as a signal in the wilderness. As they were airlifted to safety, Frank and John looked at each other, their eyes reflecting a newfound appreciation for life, friendship, and the power of preparation and quick thinking in the face of disaster. The adventure was also a reminder that even in the most unexpected and dangerous circumstances, there is always a way out — if one remains calm, resourceful, and never loses sight of hope.
