Growing up in a small town in the heart of the countryside, my hometown holds a special place in my heart.
My hometown has rich history. Dating back to the early 1800s, some people came to the countryside from
the noisy city and built the town. They tilled (耕种) the land, made the roads and built buildings along them. As I
walk down the wide streets, I can see the buildings still stand tall today. By looking back at the town’s history, I
always feel so proud.
My hometown is also a lively community, where neighbors greet each other with a smile and lend a helping
hand in times of need. From festivals that bring the town together to volunteer chances that make the town better,
there is a strong sense of family. Along the streets, there are many local businesses run by hard-working people.
They offer places for people to catch up over a cup of coffee or share a meal with friends.
My hometown is rich in natural beauty. The rolling hills surround (包围) the town. In the spring, flowers
are everywhere in the town, while in the fall, the leaves turn red and gold. The local park offers a peaceful place
where I often rest and connect with nature.
From the Main Street with mom-and-pop shops to the fields that spread as far as the eye can see, every
corner of this town is filled with memories of my childhood.
1.Who built the town in the early 1800s
A.People from the countryside. B.People from the city.

Sugar painting, as the name means, is a painting made of sugar. It’s the sugar for us to taste, and the

once could only enter homes of the kings, also went into common people’s homes. During the Song and Yuan
Dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sweetness. In the Ming Dynasty, some people added
pictures with good luck to the bowl of sugar, and sugar painting came into being.
Sugar painting is different from other paintings. Sugar painters use syrup (糖浆) as the material (材料), a
spoon (汤勺) as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth table as the “paper”. To make syrup, they have to make sugar hot
before painting. Since syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to make the work very quickly. They
move the spoon full of syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting is finished.
_________ The sugar painting that used to be rich in shapes has become poorer because of fewer needs.
What’s worse, only a few old sugar painters are willing to pass on this kind of art.
For most people, painting is a kind of art and difficult to understand. However, sugar painting has entered
people’s daily lives. Through it, we may see the spiritual support of people across centuries. Now, sugar painting
has been an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in China. So we Chinese should remember, miss and
pass on the art till forever.
1.What does the underlined word “precious” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.valuable and expensive B.useful and cheap
C.inexpensive but special D.simple but priceless
2.When did sugar painting appear
A.In the Warring States Period. B.In the Tang Dynasty.
C.In the Yuan Dynasty. D.In the Ming Dynasty.
3.Why should sugar painters make the work very quickly
A.To show their good skills. B.To stop syrup becoming hard.
C.To protect the spoon and the table. D.To save people’s waiting time.
4.Which sentences can be put in the ________
A.Luckily, more and more young people like it
B.It’s strange that fewer people enjoy eating.
C.However, it’s a pity that this folk art is dying recently.
D.As time goes on, people create different forms of sugar painting.

5.How might the writer feel about today’s sugar painting according to Paragraph 4
A.Hopeful. B.Angry. C.Unclear. D.Worried.
【答案】1.A 2.D 3.B 4.C 5.D
【导语】本文主要介绍了一种中国传统艺术形式兼小吃——糖画。
1.词义猜测题。根据“So sugar, the precious thing that once could only enter homes of the kings, also went into

sugar painting came into being.”可知,糖画出现在明朝。故选 D。
3.细节理解题。根据“Since syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to make the work very quickly.”

4.推理判断题。根据“The sugar painting that used to be rich in shapes has become poorer because of fewer needs.
What’s worse, only a few old sugar painters are willing to pass on this kind of art.”可知,糖画的形式变得单一,
且只有少数老艺人愿意传承这门艺术,说明此段讲糖画面临的危机,因此填入“However, it’s a pity that this
folk art is dying recently.”最合适。故选 C。
5.观点态度题。第四段提到糖画“需求减少、传承人稀缺”,作者用“What’s worse”强调问题严重性,并呼
吁保护这一非遗。由此可推断作者对糖画的现状感到担忧。故选 D。

We are a small country; lend suitable for building is expensive. The
price of land is an important part in house prices. Also, in Britain, most
houses are built of brick, so labour costs (人力成本) are high. When I visited
the U.S., I noted that many of the new houses were built of timber and didn’t
have slates (石 板 ) or tiled roofs (用 瓦 平 铺 的 屋 顶 ). This is why when
tornadoes (龙卷风) hit, houses there are blown away.
Because of the housing market and prices, I am back for good in
France, after 10 years of working in the U.K. For 130,000, you can at least
get a three-to four-bedroom cottage and lots of land in France.
You might Google “British country houses images” for some nice
pictures of bigger houses. There is a huge variety of styles and sizes of houses
in the U.K. well worth a look.
In the past, nobody could afford bigger houses. And it’s cheaper when
you have less space to heat. Remember that it’s not a warm country.
If you have been to the U.K. , you will see how crowded it is around
cities and towns. There is no room for large houses. What’s more, energy is
very expensive in the U.K. and it is cold in winter, so a large house costs a lot
of money to heat.
1.According to Berry, what causes Britain to have small but expensive houses
①Limited land. ②High labour costs.
③A large population. ④High prices of land suitable for building.
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.②③④
2.According to the article, why is Sue back in France
A.She got tired of living in the U.K. B.She has found a better job in France.
C.She already has a big house in France. D.She thinks the house prices in the U.K. are too high.
3.Who lists lower energy costs as a benefit of a smaller house
A.Sue and Kim. B.Kim and Chris. C.Berry and Chris. D.Berry and Tiffany.

三、U6 单元话题期末热点预测:诗中美景/向往的香格里拉
Have you heard of a place named Shangri-La It is said that it is a wonderful place. People there seem very
happy. But does it really exist Well, it is in China.
Shangri-La first showed up in a novel called Lost Horizon in 1933. The book was written by a British man
named James Hilton. It tells the story of a man who goes to Shangri-La after a plane crash in Xinjiang’s Kunlun
Mountains.
However, Shangri-La is not in Xinjiang. People believe it is in Yunnan and Sichuan. We are not 100% sure,
but many think Hilton wrote about it based on what Joscph Rock wrote. Rock was a botanist. He spent a lot of
time in the forests and mountains of Yunnan and Sichuan in the 1920s and 1930s and was always researching and
writing about different kinds of plants. What he saw in China is like what Hilton described about Shangri-La.
I first knew Shangri-La from a video game, Far Cry 4. In this game, you sometimes go to Shangri-La to
fight against bad guys. The place in the game is really beautiful. There are special animals and brave people. I
think the game makers got ideas from Lost Horizon and Rock’s writings.
I haven’t been to Yunnan or Sichuan. But I heard the countryside there is really nice. I hope to visit there
some day and see the beauty of “Shangri-La” by myself.

(Translated by Xu Yuanchong)
Take the poem “Mount Heaven’s Gate Viewed from Afar” by Li Bai (Tang Dynasty) as an example. The
whole poem depicts (描绘) the poet’s magnificent view of Tianmen Mountain, as well as the rushing of the Chu
River (a section of the Yangtze River near Tianmen Mountain) and the majesty of the green mountains on both
sides of the river. This poem not only shows Li Bai’s excellent poetry skills and inner feelings, but also reflects
the love and yearning of Tang Dynasty literati (文人) for natural beauty. Their love and strong wishes for the
beauty of nature are just like ours in modern society.
Another is Wang Wei’s poem. His works often depict quiet mountains and flowing waters. These poems let
us feel the peace and magic of nature. Chinese landscape poetry is like a window, through which we can not only
enjoy the beauty of nature but also understand the poets’ rich emotions. It’s also like a bridge connecting us to the
beautiful world of ancient poets and nature.

As modern games come out, people forget (忘记) about the old ones. Teachers at a primary school ask their
students to write games they know. They are surprised that many students know more about computer games. It is
easy to see many of today’s school children don’t know those traditional games like hide-and-seek (捉迷藏) and
jump rope games. They like to play computer games, go to the Internet and play games on smartphones.
A teacher says, “Children forget those old games. It’s sad.”
The old games are usually outdoor activities. Children can play in breaks and after school. They often need
friends to play with. They feel happy. Jump rope (跳绳) games are always popular in countries all over the world.
People like playing in different ways. When a parent talks about her primary school, she says, “Rubber band (橡
皮筋) jumping is so interesting. Girls love playing this game. This game can help children improve their jumping
skills and make friends.”

High above the city stood a shining golden statue of the Happy Prince. His body was covered with fine gold,
his eyes were made of two bright blue sapphires, and a large red ruby glowed on his sword. People passing by
always said, “He looks as perfect as the sun!”
One cold night, a little Swallow flew to rest between the Prince’s feet. Suddenly, a water drop fell on his
head. “How strange! The sky is clear,” he thought. Looking up, he saw the Prince’s sapphire eyes filled with tears.
“Why do you cry ” asked the Swallow.
“When I lived in the palace, I never knew pain. But now I see hungry children and lonely old people.
Please take the ruby to the little boy coughing in the poor house,” said the Prince.
The kind Swallow did as asked. He carried the ruby to a dark room where a boy lay ill. The next day, the
Prince said, “Now take my sapphire eyes to the writer starving in his attic.” Though sad to see the Prince blind,
the Swallow obeyed.
Days grew colder, but the Swallow stayed. “Give my gold leaves to the poor,” the Prince begged. Piece by
piece, the Swallow gave away the gold until the statue turned grey.
One morning, the Swallow whispered, “Goodbye, dear Prince,” and fell dead at his feet. At that moment,
the Prince’s lead heart broke into two pieces.
When the mayor saw the ugly statue, he ordered it melted. Only the broken heart and the dead bird
remained. God said, “You are the most precious (珍贵的) things in my garden.”

Sugar painting, as the name means, is a painting made of sugar. It’s the sugar for us to taste, and the
painting for us to enjoy.
Since the Warring States Period (战国时代), people loved sweets and had different ways of making sugar.
In the Tang Dynasty (朝代), people greatly improved skills of sugar making. So sugar, the precious thing that
once could only enter homes of the kings, also went into common people’s homes.

Even in more rural or open areas like Scotland, the newer houses are so
small but expensively. Compared to England, Scotland has so much space for
much bigger homes like those in the U.S. or Australia, but people there
choose to build small homes that look really out of place in the countryside.
What’s more, the prices are so high. Why

In the past, nobody could afford bigger houses. And it’s cheaper when

However, Shangri-La is not in Xinjiang. People believe it is in Yunnan and Sichuan. We are not 100% sure,

Mount Heaven’s Gate Viewed from Afar
Breaking Mount Heaven’s Gate, the great River rolls through;
Its east-flowing green billows, hurled back here, turn north.
From the two river banks thrust out the mountains ________;
Leaving the sun behind, a lonely sail comes forth.
