A 19. C 20. W: Jessica Watson who was born in 1993 became the youngest person to sail non-stop around the world alone in 2010. The journey took seven months. During that time she went through heavy storms and had to do repairs on the boat herself as, according to the rules, she was not allowed to stop at any port halfway or receive anything that another person gave her. She was inspired to make the voyage after reading a book written by the previous record holder Jesse Martin, who sailed around the world at the age of 18. Since completing her voyage, Jesse has written her own book called True Spirit. Jordan Romero, born in 1996, became the youngest person to climb Mount Qomolangma at the age of 14. He was accompanied on the climb by his father. He was inspired to achieve it after seeing a painting at his school which showed the seven continents’ highest peaks. The parents of both Jessica and Jordan have received criticism for allowing their children to put themselves in danger. One sixteen-year-old girl called Janet Gordon lost five fingers from frostbite while attempting to climb Qomolangma two years before Jordan and a Dutch court took a girl away from her parents and put her into state care to stop her attempt to beat Jessica’s record. AAWP Award Series 2025The AWP Award Series is an annual competition for the publication (出版) of excellent book-length works. Despite the physical challenges, she was determined to lead an active life.Sweta’s foray (尝试) into comedy initially came from her admiration for Indian comedians like Aditi Mittal, Azeem Banatwalla, and Daniel Fernandes. Encouraged by their ability to connect with the audience through humor, she decided to engage in comedy herself, exploring the work of global comedians and shaping her own comedic style. When Sweta first stepped into comedy in 2016 in her hometown Pune, she noticed people often pulled back when they saw her on stage. “It was difficult because people weren’t used to the idea of a disabled woman doing comedy; it was a real downer,” she recalls. To get people to accept her as a comic, Sweta began her sets by reading the room and accommodating her jokes to the audience’s moods. It took some time to understand which jokes landed and which didn’t. She spent the first few minutes easing the audience into her performance before delivering her strongest jokes. At one of her early comedy shows, Sweta faced a tough setup, making it hard for her to manage her stick. She recalls that while previous comics had successfully warmed up the audience, the atmosphere of the room changed when they saw special arrangements made for her. Later, to deal with such problems, Sweta always eases her anxiety by making light of her struggle to get on stage. For example, if the steps are particularly steep and it takes time to climb, she jokes, “Oh, thanks for clapping for two hundred years, guys!”Sweta’s message to people with similar conditions thinking about starting their own careers is simple: “Own your space and speak your mind confidently, without worrying about how others might react. Be yourself and don’t try to fit into anyone else’s image.”24. What brought Sweta Mantrii into comedy A. Her inborn sense of humor.B. Her parents’ encouragement.C. It argues that people who start from a place of advantage, like intelligence, fame, wealth, or skill, will have the opportunity to collect more of that advantage compared to others. The Matthew Effect is often thought of by the phrase, “the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer.”The Matthew Effect may largely be explained by preferential attachment, whereby wealth or credit is distributed among individuals according to how much they already have. This has the net effect of making it increasingly difficult for low ranked individuals to increase their totals because they have fewer resources to risk over time, and increasingly easy for high ranked individuals to preserve a large total because they have a large amount to risk. The Matthew Effect is often seen in sports and the development of athletes. It has been proven that how many children who start playing in elite (精英) are the oldest and most mature in their age group, with physical advantages. They then have professional coaching, more practice time, and ongoing competition against better players. This experience helps them improve significantly more each year compared to their peers. These advantages continue to gather over time. Their eventual skill level greatly surpasses those of their peers. In education, the term “Matthew effect” has been adopted by education theorists to describe a phenomenon on how new readers acquire the skills to read. Effectively, early success in acquiring reading skills usually leads to later successes in reading as the learner grows, while failing to learn to read before the third or fourth year of schooling may be indicative of lifelong problems in learning new skills. While the Matthew Effect can significantly influence career development and your performance in other fields, it is not an unbreakable barrier. By actively breaking down these barriers with a clear goal and determined mindset, we can cultivate a more inclusive and fair workplace environment. Expanding networks, strengthening connections, and advocating for fair practices are crucial steps in breaking the cycle of the Matthew Effect and fostering equal opportunities for all.28. Which of the following is a typical example of the Matthew Effect A. A famous actor wins a national award.B. A brilliant pupil fails in middle school.C. A beggar becomes wealthy and popular.D. A celebrity becomes poor and homeless.29 What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about A. The underlying logic of the effect.B. The methods of distributing wealth.C. The results of risking fewer resources.D. The causes of being low ranked people.30. Who can be superior to their peers in the development of athletes A. A freshman with a good coach.B. An athlete fond of competitions.C. A mature male proud of his goal.D. A senior with physical advantage.31. What does the last paragraph talk about concerning the Matthew Effect A. Its possible limitations.B. Its practical application.C. Expectations for expanding it.D. Suggestions on overcoming it.【答案】28. A 29. A 30. D 31. 根据文章第一段“The Matthew Effect is a term that describes the concept in society of accumulated advantage. It argues that people who start from a place of advantage, like intelligence, fame, wealth, or skill, will have the opportunity to collect more of that advantage compared to others(马太效应描述社会中累积优势的概念,即拥有智力、名望、财富或技能等优势的人,会比他人获得更多优势)”可知,马太效应的典型例子是“已有优势者进一步获得更多优势”。 故选A。 根据第二段“The Matthew Effect may largely be explained by preferential attachment, whereby wealth or credit is distributed among individuals according to how much they already have. This has the net effect of making it increasingly difficult for low ranked individuals to increase their totals because they have fewer resources to risk over time, and increasingly easy for high ranked individuals to preserve a large total because they have a large amount to risk(马太效应在很大程度上可以用优先连接来解释,即财富或信誉是根据个人已有的多少来分配的。这产生的净效应是,随着时间的推移,排名较低的个人越来越难以增加他们的总量,因为他们可冒险的资源较少;而排名较高的个人则越来越容易保持较大的总量,因为他们有大量的资源可以冒险)”,可知,本段解释资源如何基于已有优势分配,导致“富者愈富”。可推理出本段重点在于分析效应的内在逻辑机制,而非结果或原因。故选A。 根据第三段“It has been proven that how many children who start playing in elite (精英) are the oldest and most mature in their age group, with physical advantages. They then have professional coaching, more practice time, and ongoing competition against better players. This experience helps them improve significantly more each year compared to their peers. 根据最后一段“While the Matthew Effect can significantly influence career development and your performance in other fields, it is not an unbreakable barrier. By actively breaking down these barriers with a clear goal and determined mindset, we can cultivate a more inclusive and fair workplace environment. Expanding networks, strengthening connections, and advocating for fair practices are crucial steps in breaking the cycle of the Matthew Effect and fostering equal opportunities for all(虽然马太效应会显著影响职业发展以及其他领域的表现,但它并非不可逾越的障碍。通过明确的目标和坚定的决心积极打破这些壁垒,我们可以营造一个更加包容和公平的职场环境。拓展人脉、加强联系以及倡导公平实践是打破马太效应循环、为所有人创造平等机会的关键步骤)”可知,末段指出“马太效应虽影响深远,但并非不可打破”,并提出“主动打破障碍、建立包容环境、扩展人际网络”等建议。选项D“克服它的建议”正确概括段落内容,故选D。DFew things can make us act unreasonably like feeling hungry. We’ve all been there. Even small inconveniences can cause a meltdown when we’re desperate for a snack. To quote that great Snickers’ catchphrase: you’re not you when you are hungry. And neither are your gut bacteria At least, that’s the conclusion of a new study.According to researchers from the University of North Carolina (UNC), when our bacteria cells get hungry, they start to release harmful toxins (毒素) into our bodies, making us feel unwell. Dr Adam Rosenthal, assistant professor of UNC’s School of Medicine, has been looking at the functions of different cells within the gut microbiome to see why some lead to a feeling of isolation and others make us feel ill.He and his team selected one particular gut bacteria type called Clostridium perfringens, which is one of the most common causes of food poisoning. They found that when starved of nutrients, these bacteria cells produced toxins that make people feel sick. When well-fed, they didn’t produce toxins.“If we provide more of these nutrients, maybe we can get the toxin-producing cells to behave a little bit better,” suggested Dr Rosenthal. To test the theory, the scientists exposed those badly behaving cells to a substance called acetate (醋酸盐) and found that both toxin levels and the number of toxin-producing cells reduced.Based on this new research, there’s one key lesson for us ordinary individuals. Not eating enough and leaving wide gaps between meals aren’t great for our gut health. We also know that what we feed our gut really matters. Increasingly, experts suggest we should aim to eat a blend of a minimum of food from 30 plants a week to give our bacteria vitamins, minerals and other nutrients they need to thrive. So it makes sense that a dearth of nutritious foods might have a damaging impact on how well our microbiome functions.Eating regularly and focusing on having a diverse range of plants and fermented (发酵的) foods, which have been proven to help improve gut diversity more than fibre.32. What will happen when people feel hungry A. They behave logically. B. They get more tolerant.C. They break down easily. D. They desire only to sleep.33. What did Dr Adam’s research focus on A. The functions of various body cells.B. The substances to reduce toxin levels.C. The common causes of food poisoning.D. The type of nutrients gut bacteria need.34. What plays a major role in maintaining the gut health A. The duration of your meals.B. The variety of nutritious food.C. Eating enough meat every week.D. Leaving wide gaps between meals.35 Which of the following is the best title for the text A. Overeating is harmful to your health.B. Your gut bacteria can get “hungry” too.C. Over the years, my drawings became more expressive, but it wasn’t until I attended a lecture by Dr. Patch Adams that my art took on a new direction. He spoke about using humor to heal (治愈), reaching people in ways that medicine alone sometimes couldn’t. “A simple drawing could do more than just fill space on paper; it could bring light to even the darkest moments,” he said. His words sparked an idea in me: I decided to use my art to cheer patients in the hospital.By chance, I discovered that our local hospital had an arts-in-medicine program. Without a clear plan, I nervously called the head nurse and introduced myself as a “clinical cartoonist”. There was a brief silence before she asked, “What exactly is that ” I laughed awkwardly, admitting that it was something I had just made up. To my surprise, she invited me to come in and give it a try.Walking into the hospital for the first time with my sketchpad (素描簿), I felt both excitement and fear. I was used to spending hours alone, creating art. But now, I was in a children’s ward (病房), surrounded by patients and families facing real struggles. Could my humor fit into this space Could my drawings bring any comfort to those in pain That day, I met my first patient, Sarah, a 5-year-old girl who lay quietly in her bed, with no light in her eyes. Her mother sat quietly beside her to offer her comfort. I tried to introduce myself in a playful way, but Sarah didn’t seem to show any interest. Her look was fixed on the ceiling, distant and disconnected. The room was heavy with quiet tension. I knew I had to do something to break the ice. I pulled out my sketchpad and announced, “I’m going to draw something for you!” Sarah’s mother offered a faint smile, but Sarah didn’t react. I knew I couldn’t give up and began to create my cartoon character.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Looking at my drawings, Sarah finally broke into a long-lost smile.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】范文I knew I couldn’t give up and began to create my cartoon character. After a while, several funny drawings appeared on the paper, which demonstrated a playful panda with a heart-shaped nose and a hat that seemed to dance on its head. I sketched with a gentle hand, each line a whisper of hope, trying to capture Sarah’s attention. The panda’s eyes twinkled with a friendly mischief, and its arms were open wide, as if inviting her into a world of joy and imagination. The atmosphere in the room seemed to warm up, with me waiting for Sarah’s reaction.Looking at my drawings, Sarah finally broke into a long-lost smile. Her eyes finally met mine, bright with a child’s wonder. The room, once heavy with tension, now echoed with the soft laughter of a child finding a magical world in a simple, yet powerful cartoon. Tears of gratitude welled up in her mother’s eyes as she watched her daughter’s face lit up with happiness. The panda had not only filled the space on the paper but had also cured the pain in Sarah’s heart, bringing the light back to her eyes.【解析】【导语】本文以人物为线索展开,讲述了作者从小开始画漫画,在受到帕奇·亚当斯博士的启发后,作者决定用艺术来鼓舞医院里的病人。 词汇激活行为类①吸引:capture/catch②点亮:light up/lighten③遇见:meet/encounter情绪类①快乐:joy/happiness/pleasure②感激:gratitude/thankfulness【点睛】[高分句型1] After a while, several funny drawings appeared on the paper, which demonstrated a playful panda with a heart-shaped nose and a hat that seemed to dance on its head.(运用了which引导非限制性定语从句)[高分句型2] Tears of gratitude welled up in her mother’s eyes as she watched her daughter’s face lit up with happiness.(运用了as引导时间状语从句)海南中学高三年级第六次月考英语注意事项:1. How much is the shirt A. 19.15. Her appreciation of Indian comedians.D. Her desire to win the fight against spina bifida.25. How did the audience probably feel about Sweta’s initial performance A. Relaxed and amused. B. Curious and interested.C. Concerned and anxious. D. Doubtful and uncomfortable.26. How did Sweta handle awkward situations on stage A. She started to seek for help in time.B. She ignored the audience’s reactions.C. She adapted her jokes to the audience.D. She apologized and left the stage quickly.27. What can we learn from Sweta’s story A. He laughs best who laughs last.B. Actions speak louder than words.C. Walk your way despite what others say.D. Always believe in the goodness of people.CThe Matthew Effect is a term that describes the concept in society of accumulated advantage. Which of the following is a typical example of the Matthew Effect A A famous actor wins a national award.B. A brilliant pupil fails in middle school.C. A beggar becomes wealthy and popular.D. A celebrity becomes poor and homeless.29. What is paragraph 2 of the text mainly about A. Suggestions on overcoming it.DFew things can make us act unreasonably like feeling hungry. Leaving wide gaps between meals.35. Which of the following is the best title for the text A. Overeating is harmful to your health.B. Your gut bacteria can get “hungry” too.C. There are some ways to improve gut health.D. Gut bacteria can do wonders for your health. Workplace productivity greatly influences the level of effectiveness and co-operation within a business. I knew I couldn’t give up and began to create my cartoon character.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Looking at my drawings, Sarah finally broke into a long-lost smile.__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 展开更多......
