The Cat Flower Garden, the world’s first cat café, opened in Taiwan in 1998. The café offered baked goods and a selection of tea and coffee in addition to allowing time to spend with the cats. The concept quickly spread to many other places around the world.
Customers can sit with the cats, pet them, play with them or just relax watching cats do what cats do. Each café has its own rules in place for the safety of the cats. They usually include: no loud noises, running or chasing the cats; do not disturb them if they are eating or sleeping; and a limit on the number of people in the cat space at any one time.
Cat cafés are not shelters, so they do not rescue or accept stray (走失的) animals. Most of them partner with shelters and other animal organizations. The cats are available for adoption.
Alisha Reynolds is the owner of Pawsitivitea, a famous cat café in New York. She opened it after visiting a cat café in Virginia. Impressed by the experience, she wanted to open something similar by combining her strong sense of compassion, her culinary (烹饪) training and her experience as a salesperson. “Opening a cat café seemed like a better option than working three jobs,” she said.
Reynolds likes to add fun themes to her business, such as a pretend Halloween party in July, with some of the cats wearing fun, but safe decorated vests. “People love the concept of a cat café,” she said. “Plus we have adopted out more than 350 cats since we opened three years ago.” She also has a blog devoted to the benefits of interacting with cats in a café setting. Some of the benefits she lists are the calming effect of a cat’s purr (猫呼噜声) and sitting with a cat in a peaceful environment can reduce stress.
The cats benefit as well. Whatever their backgrounds have been, they now live in a safe, loving space and they are able to spend time with people who show them love. And of course, many of the café visitors adopt the cats after meeting them in person, which leads to a life-long bond with the cats.

Researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine have led a worldwide, advanced study demonstrating the potential of tirzepatide, known to manage Type 2 diabetes (糖尿病), as the first effective drug treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a sleep-related disorder characterized by repeated episodes of irregular breathing due to complete or partial blockage of the upper airway.
The results, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, highlight the treatment’s potential to improve the quality of life for millions around the world affected by OSA.“This study marks a significant milestone in the treatment of OSA, offering a promising new treatment option,” said physician Atul Malhotra, lead author of the study.
OSA can result in reduced oxygen levels in the blood and can also be associated with an increased risk of heart diseases. Recent studies, also led by Malhotra, suggest that the number of OSA patients worldwide is close to 936 million.
Conducted in two double-blinded, randomized, controlled trials, the new study involved 469 participants living with OSA.They were from nine different countries, including the U.S., Australia and Germany. Participants either used or did not use continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, the most common OSA treatment which uses a machine to maintain an open airway during sleep, preventing interruptions in breathing. Patients used either 10 or 15 mg of the drug by injection (注射) or a placebo (安慰剂). The impact of tirzepatide was evaluated over 52 weeks.
Researchers found that tirzepatide led to a significant decrease in the number of breathing interruptions during sleep, a key indicator used to measure the severity of OSA.This improvement was much greater than what was seen in participants that were given a placebo. Importantly, some participants that took the drug reached a point where CPAP therapy might not be necessary.

Her chronological (按时间计算的) age is 66 but her subjective age is 40. The woman I’ll call Ana did not become fully aware of this disconnect until she went for her Covid-19 vaccination (接种疫苗) a couple of years ago. As she stood in line, surrounded by her contemporaries, she looked around and thought: Are they really my age Later, amused and slightly worried, she discussed it with her friends. Almost all of them said the same thing had happened to them.
Why do some of us feel that the number of candles on our birthday cake can’t be right Psychologists and scientists have been studying this phenomenon since the 1970s. Some wonder about the cultural factors that push us to look younger. A 1989 study by the American Psychological Association concluded that subjective age identities are “a form of defensive denial by which adults can disassociate themselves from the stigma attached to growing old.”
Belén Alfonso agrees. The psychologist specializing in gender studies doesn’t believe a mature person should be blamed for perceiving themselves, or presenting themselves to others, as younger, but she argues that we need to understand the social context that pushes them to do so. “Having a subjective age of 20 when we are 65, for example, suggests that we see ourselves as energetic, strong, attractive. But why can’t we associate those qualities with being 65 ”
Take Madonna. The singer, who is 65, has long been criticized for how she presents herself: a woman confident in herself. Judging by the comments on social media, many people see this as a big problem — they believe that a woman in her 60s should cover herself up and not attract attention. In a statement posted on Instagram earlier this year, the singer responded to the haters: “I have never apologized for any of the creative choices I have made, nor the way that I look or dress, and I’m not going to start.”
At the high-school reunion, we may feel we are the best-preserved of our fellow alumni (校友). That’s okay, but it’s not real. However, seeing yourself as younger can be good for your physical and mental health. So, forever young, to the end, like Madonna.
12.What does the underlined word “stigma” in Paragraph 2 mean
A.Value. B.Prejudice. C.Disability. D.Inconvenience.
13.Why is Madonna mentioned in Paragraph 4
A.To illustrate the influence of social context.
B.To criticize those who dismiss her as inappropriate.
C.To introduce a singer who has enjoyed great popularity.
D.To argue for those who present themselves regardless of age.
14.What is true according to the passage
A.The perception of age is a freshly raised study topic.
B.Women are more eager to present themselves than men.
C.It is rare for people to perceive themselves younger than they are.
D.Younger subjective age helps boost mental and physical health.
15.Which quality is the author most likely to value
A.Staying young at heart. B.Being brave in behaviour.
C.Being honest about age. D.Remaining attractive in appearance.
In the age of social media and the Internet, it’s hard to sell kids on books when they have constant overstimulation at their fingertips. Interacting with books is wildly different than interacting online, but I’m a firm believer in books being able to compete.
Despite the enormous appeal of the digital world, I have managed to raise kids who love books. This was no accident. 16 . I wanted them to find empathy (共鸣), education and beautiful escape in the pages of books. As keen readers, I know they are in the minority. 17 . That’s a shame, because reading opens doors to other people, other places and yourself. So, if you want to help your kids make space for literature, I have some strategies to share.
Buy books about stuff they love
We want our kids to love what we love. 18 . Whatever your kid’s passion is, buy them books about it. Maybe they love rocks, snakes, hairstyles, mummies or drawing. Whatever they love, give them books about those things.
Limit screen time
If you want your kids to read, you have to limit screen time. My children have screen time, but it’s regulated to leave room for other, healthier things.
Ask them about their books
19 . Get to know the plots and the characters. Ask your children fun and interesting questions about what they are reading. Let them amuse you with information, even if you don’t find it interesting. Sharing what they learned will make reading that much better.
20
Actions speak louder than words. In this case, let your children see you reading. Instead of reading online, subscribe to a magazine and let your kids see you reading it. Send the message that one is never too old to read.
A.Read in their presence.
B.Develop a reading habit.
C.I can’t stress this one enough.
D.I was purposeful about raising readers.
E.That’s normal, but it’s also mildly illogical.
F.Encourage your kids to share the stories they read with you.
G.Reading for enjoyment is trending down among children nowadays.

Chase watched the countdown on the video screen. There were only twelve minutes left, and his family wasn’t even close to repairing the damaged spaceship before it would crash into the ground. Even worse, while his family was here in the escape room, he was missing his friend Jayden’s birthday party! Why did his family have to take a winter vacation this year
“You used to love things like this!” Chase’s mom patted his shoulder. “Just look at how excited your brother is.” Chase’s younger brother, Max, was rushing around the room looking for clues. “You know, your dad and I put a lot of thought into this vacation, “Mom said. “We picked the escape room because we thought you’d like the challenge.” Chase nodded toward the countdown. “Well, I don’t think there’s any way we’re escaping in eleven minutes.” Mom pointed to the slogan (标语) printed in block letters over the exit. “Escaping is only half the fun,” she read out loud. Chase sighed. “The other half is bonding with your lovely family, of course.” Mom laughed .
“I found something!” cried Max. He was across the room waving a small white card over his head. “It appears to be part of a combination. But we’ll need two more cards to solve it.” The rest of the family jumped into action, but not Chase. As he collapsed back in his chair, he felt something under his hand. He held it up to the light of the screen.
“Chase found one of the cards!” Max shouted. Chase shrugged (耸肩) and handed it to Dad. For the first time all weekend, Jayden’s birthday party was put to the back of his mind.
“Oh boy,” Mom said, “Two minutes left and we still need another card!” “We can do this,” Chase said with a smile. His mind was racing now. He was on a mission, together with his brother and parents. The birthday party might as well have been on another planet. Suddenly the screen went blank. “Time is up,” Max said, pointing to the countdown. “Mission failed.”
