一、阅读理解
Types of Travel Agents
Travel agents play a crucial role in the tourism industry, offering various services tailored to different customer needs. The four primary types of travel agents vary based on the services they provide and the products they offer.
High Street Travel Agents
High street travel agents have been a longstanding presence in the industry. Typically located in major shopping areas, such as local high streets or shopping malls, many customers appreciate the face-to-face interaction they offer. However, the rise of online booking platforms has led to a decline in foot traffic, resulting in the closure of several high street travel agencies.
Business Travel Agents
Business travel agents specialize in planning and booking travel for business purposes. They do not always have a visible high street presence. Instead, they may be located in office blocks or quiet areas. Business travel agents are popular because they help save organization time and money, as they are able to quickly plan itineraries (旅程) and book travel at the best prices.
Internet Travel Agents
Internet travel agents operate online. They are the most popular type of travel agent nowadays, as many people prefer to book online. The rise of internet travel agents has been so significant in recent years that there is now much competition in the marketplace. This has helped drive down prices and make holidays more affordable for customers.
Call Centre Travel Agents
A call centre travel agent operates from a call centre. It provides advice and guidance on booking holidays via the telephone. Some companies even choose to base their call centres in developing countries, where wages and overhead costs are lower. However, this may negatively impact the service quality due to communication challenges and varying customer expectations.

Three years ago, Lydia Pender and her husband, Andy, were moving into their new apartment in Honolulu, Hawaii, when they noticed loud music coming through the walls from their neighbor’s apartment. Curious, they decided to visit, introduce themselves, and find out what on earth all the noise was about.
That’s when they met Derek Peart, a 98-year-old former English pilot in the British Navy. After chatting with him, they discovered the music was playing loudly because he wore hearing aids that didn’t pick up sound very well. So, the couple helped him adjust his hearing aids. As they worked on the adjustments, they realized the source of the loud music they had heard earlier was actually the piano in his apartment.
Later, the couple learned that Mr. Peart had taken lessons as a child but eventually stopped. When he got older, he realized he could just sit and play anything from recall, relying on his sense of touch to navigate the piano keys. His late wife, Mickey, had encouraged him to play and even bought him the Yamaha piano he still plays today. “He said he would play for us sometime, and that’s where the friendship started,” Lydia recalls. “We thought he was the coolest guy and wanted to hang out with him more!”
Lydia and Andy initially invited Mr. Peart over for tea, which turned into a monthly tradition of pizza, beer, and dessert, followed by a mini concert from Mr. Peart. They enjoyed singing and dancing to old songs, including “Secret Love” by Doris Day. Lydia began recording their performances and posted a video on TikTok, which went viral, bringing Mr. Peart unexpected fame. He enjoys the positive comments and can’t believe the reach of the videos. Through their friendship, Lydia has learned that the friendship across ages is a gift. Mr. Peart, who loves animals, especially enjoys visiting Lydia’s cat, Biscuit. Their bond is strong, and Lydia hopes to continue enjoying his company and music for as long as possible.

New research from King’s College London and the University of Greenwich shows that loneliness in young people can affect their future, including their job chances and overall success. The study found that lonely young adults are more likely to be out of education, work, or training, and they think they are less employable compared to their peers (同龄人) who aren’t lonely.
The researchers studied 2,232 people born in England and Wales between 1994 and 1995. They looked at these people when they were 12,18, and 26 years old, checking how lonely they felt and how they rated their social status. At age 18, they also looked at their job situation and employability.
Researchers found that young adults who had experienced loneliness earlier in life experienced difficulties in young adulthood, even if they were no longer lonely. Researchers think that this demonstrates that loneliness impacts a person’s long term economic prospects and that addressing loneliness in young people could help them be more successful and productive, which could benefit the economy.
Louise Arseneault, Professor of Developmental Psychology and one of the study’s senior co-authors, said, “Our research is one of very few studies reporting on the impact of loneliness years later. If we are to create effective prevention strategies, we need to continue collecting data in order to unravel the long-term outcomes of loneliness at various stages of life. This can offer insight for developing prevention strategies.”
Dr. Timothy Matthews, Lecturer in Psychology at University of Greenwich and one of the study’s senior co-authors, said, “While we should never forget that loneliness impacts people of all ages, our research suggests that reducing loneliness in children and young people could have benefits both for their own employment prospects and for the economy more widely.”
8.What impact does teenage loneliness have on the future
A.It has no impact. B.It increases productivity.
C.It improves employment. D.It leads to higher unemployment.
9.How does the article explain the long-term effects of loneliness
A.By providing only statistical data.
B.By telling personal stories and experiences.
C.By presenting research data and expert opinions.
D.By giving examples of successful young adults.
10.What might the underlined word “unravel” mean in the 4th. paragraph
A.Explain. B.Plan. C.Solve. D.Produce.
11.What does Dr. Matthews recommend in the last paragraph
A.Focus on adults, not children. B.Forget about loneliness in children.
C.Reduce loneliness to improve employment. D.Research loneliness’s link to economic growth.
Researchers are working on making transparent (透明的) wood using natural materials that are good for the environment. This new material could replace plastic in things like smartphones and windows. The problem with plastic is that it is not biodegradable, which means it doesn’t disappear in nature. Transparent wood is made by removing some parts of wood, like lignin (a substance that makes wood hard) and hemicellulose (a type of sugar that helps hold the structure of wood together), leaving only cellulose (the main substance in wood). After that, the wood is soaked in a mixture of egg whites and rice juice to make it strong and semi-transparent.
Bharat Baruah, a chemistry professor at Kennesaw State University, was inspired by his hobby of woodworking. He also thought about how buildings were made in his home state of Assam in northeastern India, where builders used a mix of sand, sticky rice, and egg whites to make strong materials. Baruah thought these materials could be used to make transparent wood strong without using harmful plastic.
To make transparent wood, the team used a vacuum (真空) and some chemicals like sodium sulfite, sodium hydroxide, and diluted bleach. These chemicals were used to remove the lignin and hemicellulose. Then, they soaked the wood in the egg white and rice mixture, which filled the holes in the wood and kept it transparent. The result was a wood that is flexible, strong, and semi-transparent.
The team also tested the transparent wood in windows. They found that the wood kept a small house cooler than glass windows did. This shows that transparent wood could be a good, energy-saving choice for windows. The researchers also added tiny wires to make the wood able to conduct electricity, which could be useful for things like wearable sensors or solar cells.
Although the transparent wood is not completely clear yet, the team is happy with their progress. The materials are natural and cheap, and they hope to make the wood fully biodegradable in the future while still keeping it strong and useful.
12.What makes transparent wood a more eco-friendly option than plastic
A.Its ability to break down naturally. B.Its ability to use wind energy.
C.Its strength and long-lasting nature. D.Its lightness and low energy use.
13.What inspired Bharat Baruah to explore transparent wood
A.Interest in plastic alternatives. B.Desire to use metal in construction.
C.Research on eco-friendly materials. D.Woodworking and Assam’s building methods.
14.How did the transparent wood perform in windows
A.It broke easily under pressure. B.It was completely clear like glass.
C.It was less energy-efficient than glass. D.It helped maintain a cooler indoor temperature.
15.What do researchers aim to achieve with transparent wood
A.To make it more flexible than plastic. B.To make it a good material for furniture.
C.To ensure it remains strong and eco-friendly. D.To make it resistant to water and fire damage.

For as long as I could remember, fear had been a constant shadow in my life. It went into my thoughts at the most inconvenient moments, whispering that I wasn’t good enough, that I would fail. When I considered pursuing my dreams, the fear was always there, reminding me that failure would be waiting to embarrass me. It was easier to listen to its warnings — taking the safe, familiar path rather than risking everything.
One day, while browsing through a local newspaper, I came across an advertisement for a writing competition. The grand prize — a publishing deal — seemed like a distant dream, something only those with true talent could achieve. I paused, the excitement briefly overshadowing my doubts. I had always loved writing, but the thought of others reading my work — judging my deepest thoughts and emotions — made my hands tremble. I could already hear the voice of fear, louder now, “You’ll never be good enough. Don’ t bother. It’s not worth the pain of failure.”
As the submission deadline grew closer, my mind became a battlefield. My fingers paused over the keyboard, and I would write a sentence, then delete it, doubting every word. My heart raced as I questioned whether my story could stand up to the others. Would I be laughed at Funny I spent hours reworking my entry, staring at the flashing line, unsure if it was even worth submitting. The fear ate at me, whispering, “You don’t belong here.”
Then, one afternoon, as the sun dipped low, I sat back in my chair, my eyes closed. The silence in the room pressed down on me, and I suddenly realized something important. The fear of never knowing — of never trying — was far worse than failing. If I didn’t submit, I would regret it forever. With shaking hands, I clicked the submit button, and in that instant, my story was out there in the world, exposed and open to the judgment of strangers.
