Clara stared at the empty notebook on her desk, her fingers trembling. It was the third time she had torm out a page, crumpled it, and thrown it into the overflowing waste basket. Why is this so hard She thought, glancing at the calendar cirsled in red: May10th—Mother’s Day.
HerrelationshipwithMomhadalwaysben...complicated. Momwasadoctorwhoworkedlateshits, often leaving before dawn and returning when Clara was already asleep. Their conversations were limited to brief notesonthefridge: “Dinnerinthemicrowave” or “Mathtesttomorrow—study!”Clarahadgrownusedtothe silence, but this year, she wanted to break it.
The notebook was meant to be a gift—a collection of memories they had never shared. On the first page, she wrote: “To Mom,who saves lives but forgot mine.” Instantly guilt(内疚) washed over her. She ripped it out.
That night, Clara found an old photo album in the attic. Flipping through it, she paused at a picture of Mom holding her as a baby, smiling in a way Clara had never seen. Behind the photo was a folded letter in Mom’s handwriting:“Clara turned I today. I missed her first steps because of an emergency surgery. How do I tell her I love her more than anything ”
Tears blurred the words.Underneath the album lay a small box labeled “Clara’s Art-Age 5 to12”. Inside were every doodle and painting Clara had thrown away over the years, carefullypreserved.
On Mother’s Day moning,Clara placed the notebook on Mom’s pillow. This time, the first page read:“To Mom, who loved me even when I didn’t see it.”

Honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree Animals can’t talk, but can they lie in other ways
Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals, from birds to chimpanzees(黑猩猩), behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Why Dishonesty often helps them survive.
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. For example, a bird called the plover sometimes pretends to be hurt in order to protect its young. When a predator(猫食动物) gets close to its nest, the plover leads the predator away from the nest. How It pretends to have a broken wing. The predator follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe in the nest.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, hides its food so it always has something to eat.Scrub jays are also thieves. They watch where others hide their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know that a thief is watching them. So they go back later, dig the food, and hide it again somewhere else.
Chimpanzees, or chimps, can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimp will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimp puts out its hand, too, the chimps are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimp take the winner’s hand and start fighting again.
Chimps are sneaky in other ways, too. When chimps find food that they love, such as bananas, it is natural for them to cry out. Then other chimps come running. But some clever chimps learn to cry very sofly when they find food. That way, other chimps don’t hear them, and they don’t need to shate ther tood.
As children, many of us learn the saying “You can’t fool Mother Nature.” But maybe you can’t trust her, either.
31. A plover protects its young from a predator by ________.
A. getting closer to its young B. pretending to be hurt

C. All the animals survive by fooling other animals.
D. The losing chimp won the fight by taking the winner’s hand.

For more than a month, the world has been excited about a newAI model, DeepSeek-R1. It was developed by DeepSeek, a Chinese business based in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province.
The new AI was released on Jan 20. In just one week, it beat OpenAI’s ChatGPT and became the top free application in Apple’s AppStore, reported Xinhua.
Its developer said that DeepSeek-R1 is as good at difficult tasks as other big models but needs less computing power(算力). It is also the cheapest of its kind and took only about 5.57million US dollas(40.58 million yuan) to develop. That is way less than the hundreds of millions or even billions that US businesses have had to spend on building similar AI models, Marc Andreessen, a technology expert in the US, told Xinhua.
DeepSeek-R1’s success largely came from its special training method. Traditionally, AI is trained in two ways. One is Chain-of-Thought, where AI learns to break problems into smaller, simpler steps. The other is Supervised Fine-Tuning,which works by showing AI lots of practice problems along with the right answers for it to find a pattern.
DeepSeek-R1, however, used Reinforcement Learning(强化学习) as the core method, Xinhua reported. In RL, AI learns by trying different things. It gets rewards for correct actions and gets punished for mistakes. For example, in a game, it gets points for picking up litter and loses points for breaking a glass. Over time, it works out the best solution all by itself.
This is how DeepSeek-R1 has grown to be a reasoning model, which is a new type of AI, noted Microsoft engineer Vinayak Hegde. Regular(常规的) AI models, like GPT-40, usually just give direct answers. But reasoning models are trained to both think and show the process.
34. What does the underlined word “released” probably mean in paragraph 2
A. Reduced. B. Expressed. C. Stopped. D. Published.
pared to other AI models, what is one of advantages of DeepSeek-R1
A. It’s smarter than others. B. It’s better at difficult tasks.
C. It’s cheaper to develop. D. It’s quicker at solving problems
36. How does Reinforcement Learning work according to the passage
A. By rewarding its correct actions. B. By breaking problems into simpler steps.
C. By creating a ight patten in solving problems. D. By finding the right way to do things on its own.
37. What is the best title for the passage
A. Changing AI world B. History of AI development
C. Building AI systems D. Challenges faced by AI models
