Eight-year-old S. Hariraj is a Foldscope devotee. He’s used it to examine the milk from his family’s cows. Though the milk looks creamy, the Foldscope reveals a world of microorganisms. “It has to be boiled and cooled before we can drink it,” he realized.
This incredible device is no ordinary microscope. Made from waterproof, tear-resistant paper, it comes in a small bag with parts that can be attached in minutes. Magnets (磁铁) hold it together, and a tiny lens (透镜) allows it to enlarge objects up to 140 times. Once built, it’s no larger than a bookmark, small enough to slip into a pocket. And the best part It costs just $2 to produce, and millions of children in low-income countries get them for free.
The idea for the Foldscope began with Manu Prakash, a professor at Stanford University, who grew up in India. As a sixth grader, he and his classmates failed to draw a microscope in a test—none of them had ever seen one. Microscopes were expensive, and not all schools could afford a well-equipped lab. “The spirit of exploration was critical to the study of science,” says Prakash. “But in order to develop that spirit, you need the right tools.” Determined to change the situation, Prakash spent years experimenting, even borrowing lenses from his brother’s glasses. In 2014, he and his Ph.D. student finally developed the Foldscope, using paper-folding techniques to create an alternative to traditional microscopes.
Young Hariraj encountered the Foldscope at Eden School in southern India, where it has transformed science lessons. Children eagerly rush outdoors, searching for ants, flowers, and leaves to examine. “I just love the look of amazement when kids look into the Foldscope,” says Indira Pandiarajan, the school principal. “When their eyes light up, I know that’s the moment they will accept science enthusiastically and learning for the rest of their lives.”
24. Why does the author mention Hariraj in paragraph 1
A. To introduce his hobby. B. To describe his family life.
C. To explain milk’s components. D. To show Foldscope’s practical use.
25. What is a feature of the Foldscope according to the text
A. It is user-friendly. B. It is magnetic-resistant.
C. It is intended for book lovers. D. It provides step-by-step instructions.
26. What motivated Manu Prakash to develop the Foldscope
A. His passion for paper-folding art.
B. A university project assigned by his professor.
C. The popularity of portable science tools in India.
D. The high cost and lack of microscopes in his childhood school.
27. Which statement would Indira Pandiarajan probably agree with
A. Scientific spirit unites researchers in India. B. The Foldscope facilitates science learning.
C. The Foldscope eases teaching workload. D. Scientific spirit fuels headmasters’ enthusiasm.

One of the top sources of added sugar in children’s diets in America is in their breakfast cereal (麦片). A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine shows that advertising drives sales of high-sugar cereals when it’s aimed directly at kids under 12—but not when it targets adults.
In the study, researchers looked at all cereals purchased by 77,000 U.S. households over a nine-year period, between 2008 and 2017. They also looked at Nielsen ratings data, which closely monitored all the ads that people in a household saw—both children and adults. What they found was a strong relationship between how much advertising was targeted to kids and how much sugary cereal that households with children bought. By contrast, there was no link to increased purchases when ads targeted adults. And these extensive data also showed that behaviors that were learned in childhood could track into adulthood, which could lead to poor health outcomes over a lifetime.
The study is the first to directly compare the influence of food advertising exposure by children with that of adults. The findings offer novel evidence of how food marketing turns children into the “ultimate weapon” in influencing family spending because they consistently ask their parents to purchase, a concept known as “pester power”.
The food industry launched the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative, a voluntary effort to police itself. The 21 participating food companies made a commitment to cut back on marketing unhealthy foods to children under 12 — later revised to under 13. A new study conducted in 2024 showed that children’s exposure to cereal ads on TV programming aimed at kids has dropped dramatically.
But Lindsey Smith Taillie, a food policy researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, says these voluntary efforts aren’t making a difference. Advertisements, like kids’ eyeballs, are moving online, making it even harder to know what marketing children are being exposed to, Taillie notes.
What did the study find about child-targeted food ads
A. They had no connection with adults’ purchases.
B. They were less effective than adult-targeted ads.
C. They might affect children’s health in the long run.
D. They could reduce children’s interest in sugary food.
29. What does the underlined phrase “pester power” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Parents’ unconditional love. B. Children’s uncontrolled spending.
C. Parents’ growing consumption. D. Children’s repeated purchase requests.
30. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. An expectation for further study. B. The follow-up influence of the study.
C. A limitation of the research method. D. The potential application of the findings.
31. What is Tallie’s attitude toward the voluntary efforts
A. Favorable. B. Tolerant. C. Disapproving. D. Reserved.
D
This might sound impossibly old-fashioned, but I still like the idea that education is about learning: facts, skills, culture, analysis, and inspiration. It’s supposed to make us better citizens. But over the last decade, the goal of learning has given way to grades and degrees. The unfortunate result has been inflation (膨胀) of both. They rise ever higher; learning doesn’t.
To avoid discouraging students, some school districts did away with D and F grades.
Grade-point averages have consistently risen even though scores on nationwide standardized exams such as the SAT have not. It’s not that I think standardized tests are the final word in measuring excellence. But when the gaps between grades and test scores are this wide and consistent, parents and the public should not be fooled.
That’s true not just of low-achieving students. In a 2023 survey, educators said that close to half of students argue for higher grades than they earn, and 8 out of 10 teachers give in. It’s hard to blame them: A third or more of students and parents disturb them when they don’t.
Unearned grades are damaging in many ways. Some students, armed with good grades, march off to college to find themselves in remedial (补习的) classes because they haven’t learned enough to take college-level courses. Employers complain that high school and even college graduates lack basic skills needed in the workforce. There are also complaints from college professors that the students aren’t even good at reading books.
Grade inflation has followed students into college. Some professors hesitate to grade accurately because of student evaluations, which are often more negative for tough graders. Remember that about 70% of college instructors are adjunct (兼职) professors who have few job protections. Many Ivy League students have learned to cherry-pick easy-grading professors. Yet a Brown University study found that students taking courses from professors with stricter grading standards learned more. We have to ask ourselves as a society: Do we want college to be a place of intellectual growth — or a performative exercise in grade fishing
What are parents fooled into thinking
SAT is the best measure of their children's abilities.
The purpose of education is to make better citizens.
Grade-point averages are vital for college application.
Children’s high grades reflect their exceptional abilities.
33. What is a consequence of grade inflation
A. Employers favor students with higher degrees.
B. Graduates fall short of employers’ expectations.
C. Remedial classes become required courses in college.
D. Low-achieving students find it harder to enter college.
34. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Strict grading promotes real learning.
B. Tough graders desire job security.
C. Student evaluations fuel intellectual growth.
D. Easy-grading professors start grade inflation.
35. What is the best title of the text
A. The game of scores B. Today, Grade A is for average
C. The force behind grade inflation D. Now, learning takes the front seat

In the hub of a city, sandwiched between skyscrapers and high-rises was a tiny but vibrant animal shelter by the name of “Paws Home”. Serving as a nice haven(避难所)for numerous homeless animals, it offered food, shelter and care.
One day, young Jack and Grace walked by the shelter and noticed a sign for a voluntary service.
Jack was absorbed immediately, “Grace, just take into consideration those sad animals in urgent need of help. Let’s join to be volunteers.”
Grace, however, showed somewhat uncertainty, “I am not sure, Jack, voluntary service takes hard work, and we have school to go to and something else to do.”
Jack insisted, “just think about what a meaningful difference we would make to the homeless animals. Don’t hesitate! Do it now!” Eventually, Grace nodded.
Both Jack and Grace ran to the animal shelter and sprang into action. Sweeping the shelter, feeding the animals and having games with them were great fun for them. With days passing, they became attached to the lovely creatures and felt a sense of pride.
On one Sunday afternoon full of sunshine, when making nice meals for the lovely, Jack happened to hear a conversation, leaving him worried. The shelter’s director, Mr. Frank, was telling a worker a financial crisis Paws Home was faced with. As donations were declining and running costs were rising, the shelter was on the verge(边缘)of being closed. “The shelter will stop in the near future”, sighed Mr. Frank.
Jack told Grace the news promptly(马上). Surely, both of them felt how urgent it was to find a way out. “We can’t wait doing nothing,” Grace said, resolve shining in her eyes, “we have to take action again.”
They immediately put forward a good plan: stage a community fundraising called “An Evening for Paws”— animals talent show, bake sale and auction(拍卖) on the square.
The weeks that followed saw how busy they were. Jack persuaded some local shops to donate pet supplies, baked goods, and art works for the auction. At the same time, Grace promoted the event online, attracting attention fast. She designed posters which would appear in the neighborhood .

Bridging the Digital Divide for the Elderly
In a world dominated by digital technology, the elderly often find themselves left behind. Considering this, our volunteer club launched an activity at Tianyi Community Center last week, focusing on helping them bridge the digital divide.
The activity began with group demonstrations on essential skills: making video calls, using mobile payments, and booking medical appointments online. Volunteers then provided personalized guidance. Through step-by-step instructions, even those hesitant with technology gradually gained confidence. One silver-haired lady, after successfully video-calling her granddaughter at college, kept thanking us with teary eyes.
This experience empowered the seniors to embrace the digital life. Despite their initial struggles, their eagerness to learn was inspiring. Every “I finally did it!” smile has reminded me that bridging this gap goes beyond goodwill —it’s a shared mission to build a future where technology unites, not divides.
Version 1
Then came the day when the community fundraising started. The Paws Home took on an electric look. In the breeze danced the dazzling streamers. On the tables lay the donated pet supplies, baked goods and art works eager to be auctioned. On the stage stayed the excited pet animals eager to show talents. In the neighborhood shuttled Jack and Grace among the crowd in the warm sunshine. Suddenly, cheers exploding thunderously, the highlight came into view. Dogs were doing tricks, cats were showing catwalks and parrots were reciting rhymes. So amazing was the show that the crowd were overwhelmingly entertained, donating generously. Meanwhile, the crowd rushing to offer, the auction lived up to their expectations instantly. Mr. Frank seeing it, his excited tears were streaming down.
Overexcited, Mr.Frank, couldn’t be more grateful to everyone. First, he looked at Jack and Grace affectionately and said proudly “well done!” On hearing it, both Jack and Grace were smiling knowingly. Then, Mr.Frank voiced the sincere thanks to the enthusiastic crowd. Immediately, they cheered in response. The cheers were resonating in the breeze and in the sunshine. Next, Mr.Frank with confidence hanging on his face promised that the Paws Home would be kept open to the homeless animals continuously. Everyone was convinced that a small community could make a big difference. For Jack and Grace, the experience was a reminder that many hands make light work
Version 2
Then came the day when the community fundraising started. The square was buzzing with excitement as families, pet lovers, and local businesses gathered for the event. Jack stood confidently on stage, microphone in hand, announcing the lineup: an animal talent show, bake sale, and an auction. Grace, darting between booths, made sure everything was running smoothly. Volunteers distributed flyers, encouraging donations. As the talent show began, the audience cheered for dogs performing tricks and cats navigating obstacle courses. Meanwhile, the bake sale drew a crowd with its delightful aroma. The auction, featuring donated pet supplies and artwork, turned into a heated bidding war As night fell, Jack nervously checked the donation box, his heart pounding. Had they raised enough
Overexcited, Mr. Frank couldn’t be more grateful to everyone. With tears glistening in his eyes, he read the final total aloud—it exceeded their expectations! The crowd erupted in cheers, and Grace hugged Jack tightly, their hard work paying off. Volunteers and supporters celebrated, exchanging warm smiles. Mr. Frank stepped forward, shaking their hands. “This shelter will continue because of you,” he said, voice thick with emotion. The once uncertain Grace now beamed with confidence, realizing that their small efforts had created a lasting impact. As the event concluded, the shelter’s future felt brighter than ever. Under the starlit sky, Jack and Grace looked at each other, a shared understanding passing between them—this was just the beginning of their journey in making a difference.
CDBC
根据第二段中“What they found was a strong relationship between how much advertising was targeted to kids and how much sugary cereal that households with children bought. By contrast, there was no link to increased purchases when ads targeted adults. And these extensive data also showed that behaviors that were learned in childhood could track into adulthood, which could lead to poor health outcomes over a lifetime. (他们发现,针对儿童的广告投放量与有孩子的家庭购买的高糖麦片的数量之间存在着紧密的联系。相比之下,当广告以成年人为目标群体时,广告投放量与家庭购买量的增加没有关联。而且这些广泛的数据还表明,童年时期养成的行为习惯会延续到成年,这可能会在一生中导致不良的健康后果)”可知,研究发现针对儿童的食品广告可能会影响儿童的长期健康。故选C。
29.词句猜测题。根据画线短语所在句“The findings offer novel evidence of how food marketing turns children into the “ultimate weapon” in influencing family spending because they consistently ask their parents to purchase a concept known as “pester power”. (这些研究结果为食品营销如何将儿童变成影响家庭消费的“终极武器”提供了新的证据,因为孩子们会不断要求父母购买,这就是所谓的pester power)”可知,研究发现食品营销如何将儿童变成影响家庭消费的“终极武器”,因为孩子们不断地要求父母购买,即画线短语“pester power”指的是孩子们反复的购买请求。故选D。
30.主旨大意题。根据第四段“The food industry launched the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative, a voluntary effort to police itself. The 21 participating food companies made a commitment to cut back on marketing unhealthy foods to children under 12 — later revised to under 13. A new study conducted in 2024 showed that children’s exposure to cereal ads on TV programming aimed at kids has dropped dramatically. (食品行业发起了“儿童食品和饮料广告倡议”,这是一项自愿的自我监管努力。21家参与的食品公司承诺减少向12岁以下儿童推销不健康食品,后来这一年龄限制被修改为13岁以下。2024年进行的一项新研究表明,儿童接触针对儿童的电视节目中的麦片广告大幅减少)”可知,第四段主要讲了研究的后续影响。故选B。
31.推理判断题。根据最后一段“But Lindsey Smith Taillie, a food policy researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, says these voluntary efforts aren’t making a difference. Advertisements, like kids’ eyeballs, are moving online, making it even harder to know what marketing children are being exposed to, Taillie notes. (但北卡罗来纳大学教堂山分校的食品政策研究员Lindsey Smith Taillie表示,这些自愿的努力并没有起到什么作用。Taillie指出,广告就像孩子们的眼睛一样,正在向网络转移,这使得人们更难知道孩子们接触到了什么样的营销)”可推知,Tallie对自愿的努力持不赞成态度。故选C。
【D篇】32-35. DBAB
根据第三段“Grade-point averages have consistently risen even though scores on nationwide standardized exams such as the SAT have not. It’s not that I think standardized tests are the final word in measuring excellence. But when the gaps between grades and test scores are this wide and consistent, parents and the public should not be fooled.(平均绩点一直在上升,尽管像学术能力评估测试(SAT)这样的全国标准化考试成绩并没有提高。
根据最后一段“Yet a Brown University study found that students taking courses from professors with stricter grading standards learned more.(然而,布朗大学的一项研究发现,接受评分标准更严格的教授课程的学生学到的东西更多)”可知,布朗大学的一项研究发现,接受评分标准更严格的教授课程的学生学到的东西更多。 故选A项。
根据第一段“This might sound impossibly old-fashioned, but I still like the idea that education is about learning: facts, skills, culture, analysis, inspiration. It’s supposed to make us better citizens. But over the last decade, the goal of learning has given way to grades and degrees. The unfortunate result has been inflation (膨胀) of both. 由此可知,文章最好的标题是B项“Today, Grade A is for average(如今,A 等级只是平均分)”。故选B项。
