Passage1
(23-24八年级下·黑龙江鸡西·期末)About 10 years ago when I was a student in college, I was working in a shop near my school. One day, I saw an elderly couple come in with a little girl in a wheelchair.
As I looked at this girl, I saw that she was seated in her chair. I realized she had no arms or legs, just a head, neck and body. She was wearing a little white dress with red dots (圆点).
As the couple wheeled her up to me, I was looking down at the cash register (收银机) .I turned my head toward the girl and gave her a wink (眨眼) . As I took the money from her grandparents, the girl gave me the biggest smile I have ever seen. All of a sudden her disability disappeared. All I saw was this beautiful girl, whose smile gave me a new sense of life. She took me from being a poor, unhappy college student and brought me into her world of smiles, love and warmth.

Have you thought about what you want to do in the future It’s something I like to do even now as an adult (成人). Still, a dream is only a dream until you write down a plan to make it happen. A good plan is the best way to make your dreams come true.
First, get a good notebook or computer to write down some notes. Make sure you can keep it well.
Then, think about what goals or dreams you have for the future. Do you want to become a writer Or maybe a doctor It doesn’t have to be a job—it could just be something you want to see happen. Maybe you want to travel to 10 countries by the time you turn 30 years old. Whatever it is, write it down.
Next, try to think of the steps you need to take to make that dream happen. Usually, it takes money to make our dreams happen, so try to find out how much money your dream needs.
Finally, think of ways, like how you will make that money. In the US, most people need to take a part-time job outside of school to save up the money they need. But you may have your own ways. Just remember, don’t be afraid to try if a dream seems expensive.

Passage11
(23-24八年级下·吉林·期末)The Face-down Generation (一代)
If you were born in the 2000s, you are called the oh-ohs. That would make you young, creative, connected, world-wide, and no doubt smart. Maybe good-looking, too. Right But what do other people think about your generation
Some adults worry that you’re more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They think of you as the “face-down generation” because you use your phone so much. They wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family.
Other adults worry that today’s youths are spoilt (溺爱) and don’t want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter (直升机) parents”. They were always there to guide and help their children with a busy program filled with homework and after-school activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With parents who do everything for them, today’s youths seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face-down generation need a heads-up Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today’s teenagers are better educated and more creative than the past generations. They seem to be willing to become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to help their communities.
There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls’ rights to go to school.
So if you’re one of the oh-ohs, there’s a reason to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking up for the face-down generation. Chances are that you do great and laugh out loud.

THE WORLD’S SMALLEST LIBRARIES
Traditional red telephone boxes are disappearing (消失) from British streets because mobile phones are now widely used to make calls outside the home. But many communities (社区) want to keep their telephone boxes—these are mostly owned by BT, a telecommunications company.
Now, BT has started a plan called “Adopt (认领) a kiosk (信息亭)”. It only costs one pound to adopt a phone box.
Telephone kiosks can be turned into museums, mini libraries, or something else. In Cheltenham, 10 red phone boxes have been changed into mini art museums, showing the work of local artists.
Telephone box libraries have now appeared in towns and villages all over Britain. Shelves are built in the telephone box, and books are donated (捐赠) by locals. The libraries are used as a place where people exchange (交换) books. Readers can come and take books at any time they like. Some kiosks are locked at night; others are open round the clock. All kinds of books appear on the shelves, such as detective stories, history books and scientific books.
“Everyone stops to talk around the phone box,” says Claire from Essex. “It has really brought the community together.”

You may think that only the old are interested in red tourism. However, this is not true. A report on red tourism shows that lots of young visitors are interested in red tourism too now. Over 89% of the visitors are under the age of 40. Many of them were even born in the 1990s and 2000s.
There are lots of special red tourist products (产品). Many of them use new technologies such as AI and VR. Maybe this is why red tourism is also popular with young people.
