When an earthquake hit Southern California on Monday, humans followed the usual action: drop, cover and hold on. But one group of elephants at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park had their own plan—circle up and stand together. One minute the elephants were playing in the sun; the next, they were reacting as the ground began to shake. The three adults looked around them and quickly stayed together, forming a circle around two 7-year-old ones. Experts call this behavior an “alert (警觉) circle,” an action elephants show when they sense a danger.
“Elephants are highly social, they take care of each other,” says Plotnik, a professor at Hunter College in New York who studies elephant behavior. Plotnik says this instinct (本能) to protect one another is the most important of the alert circle, a way for staying together when danger is near. “They stay together, the adults on the outside facing out, and then they’ll push the younger ones into the middle,” he says.
Elephants can sense the earthquake through their feet and ears, telling them the possible danger. “But earthquakes aren’t the only thing they can sense: Something similar happened during the 2006 tsunami (海啸) in Southeast Asia,” Plotnik says. “I’ve heard stories of elephants acting to the large tsunami of Thailand, for example, of elephants going up to higher ground with other elephants. These fast behaviors show the social nature of elephants,” Plotnik says. But he warns that elephants’ living in today’s world requires more than just instinct, there’s still much we don’t understand about how they avoid dangers. “Learning more,” he says, “is key to protecting these endangered animals.”
The Asian and African elephants are in great danger of dying out, and it’s important that we continue to learn more about their behavior if we’re going to come up with ways to protect them in the wild.

Confucius was a famous teacher who was born in 551 BC. This period was a dangerous time in China’s history. Many rulers were fighting across the country. Life was difficult for the poor. They worked hard for their rulers and received little money in return.
Confucius’ father died when he was only three years old. So only his mother supported him. As he grew up, Confucius worked to help his mother make money. When he wasn’t working, he would read. His favorite thing to do was learning. His mother did her best to help him learn. Gradually, rich families noticed how smart he was and offered him jobs counting their money.
Confucius did this until he was 30 years old, but he always wanted to do more. He didn’t like the way rulers treated their people. He began reading again. He wanted to find a way to help people who were less lucky than he. He believed that by educating oneself, loving the family, and respecting (尊重) tradition, one could become a better person and achieve these things by practicing self-discipline (自律)—to control his actions and feelings. He also believed that these teachings would stop war, bring peace, and save China.
For the rest of his life, Confucius traveled and taught people about self-discipline and the importance of education. He even opened China’s first school that taught both the poor and the wealthy. Although at that time he became very famous among China’s lower classes, the rulers never accepted his teachings. Self-discipline and education didn’t sound as good to them as power and wealth.
200 years later, all China accepted his teachings. Today, he is considered to be one of the world’s greatest teachers.
17.How was the life when Confucius was born
A.The people were so rich. B.It was a dangerous time.

19.What is self-discipline according to Confucius
A.Educating oneself. B.Loving the family.
C.Respecting tradition. D.Controlling the actions and feelings.
20.What’s the structure (结构) of the passage

In the larger bag, mix between 2-4 cups of ice and about 1/3 cup of salt. Put the smaller bag into the larger bag, making sure the small bag is still closed tightly. Close the larger bag. If you want to keep your hands warm, put on the winter gloves. 24 Then take a look at the smaller bag to see if it looks like ice cream.
