Do you know that some people in Britain live in boats instead of houses It’s expensive to buy a house in Britain. To save money, many people choose to live in the “floating houses”. There are over 35,000 boats on rivers in England and Wales in 2025. Many are people’s main homes.
Liam Quinn, a 37 year-old musician, lives happily on a boat for five years in London. “I love waking up to the water and swans. One month, I’m in the heart of the city; the next, I stop next to cows in the countryside,” he says.
A small boat costs between 50,000 pounds (about 456,000 yuan) and 100,000 pounds. That’s cheaper than buying a flat in London. In the richest places, the price of a flat is around 600,000 pounds.

One place that is really important in my life is my grandmother’s house. She lives in a small village in the south. I go to visit my grandmother every summer. I can get away from the city and relax.
The village is just a group of white houses on a hillside with some small shops. But it’s really peaceful.
One reason why I like the village is that it’s a beautiful place. My grandmother has a lovely garden and we can sit under the trees, drinking sweet tea and chatting. It’s so pleasant. But the main reason why this place is so important to me is my grandmother herself. She is so kind to me, and wonderful to talk to. Also, she’s a great cook and the meals she prepares are simple, but so fresh and tasty. And she always gives me snacks during the day, so I always return home feeling calm and refreshed.
I really love visiting my grandmother during the holidays. I admit that I probably couldn’t live somewhere like that all the time.
