Even in more rural or open areas like Scotland, the newer houses are so small but expensively. Compared to England, Scotland has so much space for much bigger homes like those in the U.S. or Australia, but people there choose to build small homes that look really out of place in the countryside. What’s more, the prices are so high. Why
We are a small country; lend suitable for building is expensive. The price of land is an important part in house prices. Also, in Britain, most houses are built of brick, so labour costs (人力成本) are high. When I visited the U.S., I noted that many of the new houses were built of timber and didn’t have slates (石板) or tiled roofs (用瓦平铺的屋顶). This is why when tornadoes (龙卷风) hit, houses there are blown away.
Because of the housing market and prices, I am back for good in France, after 10 years of working in the U.K. For 130,000, you can at least get a three-to four-bedroom cottage and lots of land in France.
You might Google “British country houses images” for some nice pictures of bigger houses. There is a huge variety of styles and sizes of houses in the U.K. well worth a look.
In the past, nobody could afford bigger houses. And it’s cheaper when you have less space to heat. Remember that it’s not a warm country.
If you have been to the U.K. , you will see how crowded it is around cities and towns. There is no room for large houses. What’s more, energy is very expensive in the U.K. and it is cold in winter, so a large house costs a lot of money to heat.
4.According to Berry, what causes Britain to have small but expensive houses
①Limited land. ②High labour costs.
③A large population. ④High prices of land suitable for building.
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.②③④
5.According to the article, why is Sue back in France
A.She got tired of living in the U.K. B.She has found a better job in France.
C.She already has a big house in France. D.She thinks the house prices in the U.K. are too high.
6.Who lists lower energy costs as a benefit of a smaller house
A.Sue and Kim. B.Kim and Chris. C.Berry and Chris. D.Berry and Tiffany.
Passage3

Even schools are joining the fun. One school has built a rooftop garden for learning. Students can take part in farming activities as part of their labour practice (劳动实践) classes. Xia Yufan, a student, says she can learn things that teachers don’t teach in a classroom. “I can watch how the seeds sprout (种子发芽) and grow little by little. It feels great,” she says.

The Magic of Baking Soda
Do you know what baking soda is Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate / s di m ba kɑ b n t/, is a common chemical substance in our daily life. It looks like white powder and has many amazing uses.
One of the most interesting uses of baking soda is in making food. When we bake cakes or bread, adding a little baking soda can make them rise. It reacts with the acid in the food ingredients, producing carbon dioxide gas. These tiny gas bubbles make the food soft and fluffy. Have you ever wondered why some cakes are so light and spongy Baking soda is one of the secrets!
Baking soda is also great for cleaning. It can remove stains and bad smells. For example, if there is a stain on the kitchen counter, you can make a paste with baking soda and water, then rub it on the stain. The stain will be easily cleaned away. And if your fridge smells a bit strange, putting an open box of baking soda inside can absorb the bad smell.
Moreover, baking soda has some health benefits. Gargling with a solution of baking soda and water can help soothe a sore throat. It can also help balance the pH level in our mouth, which is good for our oral health.
However, although baking soda is very useful, we should use it properly. Using too much baking soda in food can make it taste bitter. And when using it for cleaning, make sure to rinse the surface thoroughly to avoid any residue.

Chinese Paper Cutting: A Window to Tradition
China’s folk art has many treasures, and paper cutting is one of its brightest stars. With a history of over 1,500 years, this art uses red paper to express people’s wishes for happiness and good luck. Artists carefully cut patterns like flowers, animals, or Chinese characters with scissors. Their skill and patience show the spirit of creativity in Chinese culture.
In the past, people used paper cuttings to decorate windows during festivals. For example, the “Double Happiness” pattern is a must at weddings. Grandparents’ homes often have cuttings of fish, which stand for wealth and success. These designs aren’t just decorations—they carry deep cultural values and respect for nature and life.
Making paper cuttings requires simple tools: paper, scissors, and a creative mind. First, fold the paper into halves or quarters. Next, draw a pattern and cut along the lines. Finally, unfold it to see a symmetrical artwork! Though it looks easy, the real magic lies in the artist’s imagination.
Today, this art is still alive. Some schools teach it as part of our heritage. When you hold a paper cutting, you’re not just holding paper—you’re holding centuries of stories and traditions. As young learners, understanding arts like this helps us value ours and share their beauty with the world.

My First Mountain Adventure
Last summer, I experienced an unforgettable hiking trip with my cousin Leo. We decided to climb Green Mountain, a popular hiking spot near our town.
Early that morning, we packed sandwiches, water, and a first-aid kit. Mom said, “You’d better check the weather!” but we forgot. The trail started easily—yellow butterflies danced around wildflowers, and birds sang in the trees. We laughed and took photos, feeling like explorers.
Suddenly, dark clouds covered the sun. Cold rain poured down! The path turned slippery, and Leo fell, scraping his knee. I remembered the first-aid kit and cleaned his wound. We waited under a big rock until the rain stopped.
When we finally reached the top, the view was magical—a rainbow arched over misty valleys. Leo said, “We should’ve listened to Mom about the weather.” I nodded, understanding why experienced hikers always prepare carefully.
That day taught me two things: nature is beautiful but unpredictable, and we’d better respect its power. Now, I never go hiking without a raincoat!

As the clock struck twelve, the back wall vanished, revealing a grand library filled with floating books. The librarian, a wise owl wearing tiny glasses, explained: “This is a collection of stories humans have forgotten. When no one believes in them, they fade away.”
