When I was a boy there were no smart phones, computers were something you saw on STAR TREK, and our television only got one channel clearly. Still, I was never bored. The fields, hills, and woodlands around my home were the perfect playgrounds whose adventures were only limited by my imagination. I can remember once hiking to a nearby lake and slowly walking around it. At the backside of it I was amazed to find an old, one lane, dirt road that I had never seen before. I immediately set out to travel it. It was full of muddy tire tracks and deep woods bordered it on both sides, but exploring it still seemed like a fine adventure.
I walked on and on for what seemed like hours. I am sure my guardian angel was whispering in my ear to turn around and head back home but I was stubborn and even a bit stupid, so I walked on. The dirt road gave way to a gravel one and then a paved one, yet there was still neither a car nor a house in sight. My legs were getting tired. I noticed that the sun was starting to go down and I grew scared. I didn’t want to end up trapped on this road in the dark of night, but I was sure it would be dark before I could make my way back to the lake again.
I continued to walk on with the something growing inside of me. My heart was pounding and my legs were aching. I was almost in tears when I turned one last curve and saw something in the distance. It was a house that I recognized. My heart leapt up! I jumped up and down and laughed out loud. I knew the way home! It was still over a mile away but my legs felt like feathers and I hurried back to my house. I walked in with a big smile on my face just in time for dinner. Then I ended my adventure with a good night’s sleep.
I often thought of that experience recently. Actually, in our life, all roads, no matter how they twist and turn, can lead us home again. They can lead us to our homes here on Earth. They can lead us to our homes in our hearts. May you always walk your path with love. May you always help your fellow travelers along the way. And may your roads always lead you Home again.

Bad news for people who frequently use the emoji: It is no longer cool.
In recent weeks, two generations have been debating in videos and comments on Tik Tok over the symbols of millennial culture that are now considered uncool by Generation z (born after 1996). The symbols include the popular laughing crying emoji that some millennials (born in the 1980s), including me, use hundreds of times a day, or more.
“Face with Tears of Joy”, the official name for the laughing crying emoji, is currently the most-used emoji on Emojitracker, a website that shows real-time emoji use on Twitter.
“What’s wrong with the laughing crying emoji ” one user asked in a Tik Tok comment. Another responded, “It’s so off.” In a different video, a woman says she’s cut back on using it after learning kids don’t.
“I use everything but the laughing crying emoji,” 21-year-old Walid Mohammed told CNN Business. “I stopped using it recently because I saw older people using it, like my mom, my older sisters and just older people in general.”
For many Generation Zers, the emoji has become a popular replacement for conveying laughter. It’s the visual version of the slang phrase “I’m dead” or “I’m dying”, which means something is very funny. Other acceptable choices—the emoji officially called “Loudly Crying Face”, or just writing “lol” (laughing out loud) or “lmao”.
“Tears of Joy was a victim of its own success,” said Gretchen McCulloch, the author of “Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language”. “If you express digital laughter for years and years in the same way, it starts to feel insincere... It gets worn out through continued use,” she said. That’s why Generation Zers may be looking to fresh and novel ways to signal they’re laughing in different ways.
“Older generations tend to use emojis literally while younger people get more creative,” said Jeremy Burge, the chief emoji officer of Emojipedia, an emoji dictionary website. Generation Zers told CNN Business they like to assign their own meanings to emoji, which then spreads to others, often through social media.
28. What is the author’s attitude to the use of the laughing crying emoji
A. Curious. B. Favourable.
C. Uncaring. D. Impatient.
29. What message does the author try to deliver by giving some examples of Generation Zers
A. They are fond of using emojis.
B. They use emojis very scientifically.
C. The Loudly Crying Face emoji is very popular.
D. The laughing crying emoji is losing its charm.
30. What can we infer about 21-year old Walid Mohammed
A. He wants to set himself apart from older people.
B. He is seeking to be perfect.
C. He is unwilling to accept something new.
D. He sticks to his own idea.
31. What’s the problem with “Tears of Joy” according to Gretchen McCulloch
A. It isn’t funny enough. B. It isn’t creative enough.
C. It has been used too much. D. It hasn’t received much attention.
D
Climate change leads to a threat to the world’s sandy beaches, and as many as half of them could disappear by 2100, a new study has found. Even by 2050 some coastlines could be unrecognizable from what we see today, with 10% to 12% facing severe erosion (侵蚀).
Using updated sea level rise predictions, the researchers analyzed how beaches around the world would be in a future with higher seas and more damaging storms. They also considered natural processes like wave erosion, as well as human factors-like coastal building developments, all of which can affect a beach’s health. The study found that sea level rise is expected to outweigh these other factors, and that the more heat-trapping gases humans put into the atmosphere, the worse the influences on the world’s beaches are likely to be.
It’s hard to overstate just how important the world’s beaches are. They cover more than one third of the world’s coastlines, and protect coastal areas from storms. Beaches are also important economic engines, supporting relaxation, tourism and other activities. And in some areas, the beach is more than a vacation destination. In places like Australia, life near the coast revolves around the beach for much of the year.
Some of the world’s most popular beaches are already taking action. Places like Miami Beach are trucking in thousands of tons of sand to patch up (修复) badly eroded shorelines, while others have built sea walls and breakwaters in an attempt to hold precious sand in place. But the financial and environmental costs of these projects are huge, and scientists say rising seas and more powerful storms, supercharged by a warmer climate, will make this a losing battle.
However, the researchers did find that humans have some control over what happens to the world’s beaches. If the world’s governments are able to stick to modest cuts to heat-trapping gas pollution, the researchers found that 22% of projected beach losses by 2050 could be prevented, a number that grows to 40% by 2100 if greenhouse gases are limited.
32. Which is the biggest contributor to severe beach erosion
A. Damaging storms. B. Wave erosion. C. Coastal building. D. Sea level rise.
33. What can we infer from Paragraph 3
A. It is hard to protect coastal beaches.
B. One third of storms take place near beaches.
C. Beaches are of great significance to our lives.
D. Most Australians live on beach tourism.
34. What does the underlined word “this” refer to in Paragraph 4
A. Popularizing the beaches. B. Holding sand in place.
C. Reducing the project costs. D. Stopping global warming.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Half beaches could disappear by 2100.
B. Climate change is doing harm to our lives.
C. The beach is more than a vacation destination.
D. Governments are taking action to fight wave erosion.

A cold, heavy rain poured on the dark street outside a small-town bar. I sat alone inside, having a drink, when my eyes caught a shivering(颤抖) dog lying in a muddy puddle across the road. Half his body was covered with a severe skin infection. Though reluctant to brave the storm, something pushed me to act.
I led him to an alcove (壁凹) next to the bar and bought three cans of dog food from nearby store. A waitress in the bar told me the dog’s name was Shep. She said he was about a year old and that his owner had gone to Germany and left him on the street. He ate all three cans of dog food attentively. I wanted to pet him, but he smelled like death and looked even worse. “Good luck,” I said, then left.
The next day, while driving a truck for my new job, I spotted Shep near the bar. I yelled to him, seeing his tail wagging. At night, when I brought his food, he welcomed me with wild enthusiasm. Now and then, he was so weak from hunger that he fell to the pavement. Other humans had deserted him and mistreated him, but now he had a friend and his appreciation was more than obvious.
Days later, he was gone. Walking down the sidewalk looking for him, I was afraid of what I would find. He was lying on his side in an alley nearby. His tongue hung out in the dirt and only the tip of his tail moved when he saw me.
I sent him to the local veterinarian. “Is this your dog ” the vet asked after checking the pitiful specimen that lay helplessly on his examining table.
“No,” I said, “He doesn’t belong to anyone.”
“He’s got the beginnings of distemper(瘟热).” the vet said sadly. “If he doesn’t have a home, the kindest thing we can do is to end his suffering(痛苦).”
