Monica Bertagnolli is an oncologist (肿瘤学家) at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School. Growing up in Wyoming, she was well aware of the lack of health care resources in rural areas. Access to in-depth care for cancer patients is hard to get. She’s worked throughout her career to change that.
In Wyoming, there’s a great distance to travel between where people live and where they can find a cancer specialist. “If you need treatments and they have to be administered every day, and if it’s 120 miles from where you live, that ends up being a huge barrier to receiving the kind of care you need.”
And now Monica serves as the vice president of the Coalition (联盟) of Cancer Cooperative Groups (CCCG) — an international network of individuals who work to improve the quality of life and survival of cancer patients by increasing participation in cancer clinical trials.
She said, “One of the really important things is, we’re trying to make sure that cancer clinical trials can get to every single patient who needs them in my own state.” The coalition set up sites in northern and southern Wyoming that are able to run clinical trials. Before those trials became available, patients would usually go to Denver or Salt Lake City — a three-to-seven-hour drive.
Monica’s efforts to increase access to the health care needs of her rural Wyoming patients also include helping to develop new policies that will allow patients to participate in more clinical trials, and linking them with a regional doctor who can get them the access to the care they need.
In addition to the clinical trials, Monica said that technology’s progress like better cell phone and internet service in the mountains of Wyoming, as well as social media, has helped rural residents stay in touch with loved ones and medical professionals despite their distance. She is trying to advocate strongly for those changes to continue.
“I still consider myself part of Wyoming and I am very devoted to making sure that patients can get access to care.”
24.What do rural cancer patients in Wyoming need most
A.Health care. B.Better housing.
C.Further education. D.Public transportation.
25.How has Monica helped the cancer patients
A.By offering clinical trials. B.By advocating financial aid.
C.By improving internet service. D.By training medical professionals.
26.Which of the following can best describe Monica
A.Determined and loyal. B.Honest and generous.
C.Grateful and courageous. D.Devoted and responsible.
27.What is a suitable title for the text
A.Technology: A push for progress B.Monica: A helper for cancer patients
C.CCCG: A pioneer for cancer treatment D.Clinical trials: A hope for cancer patients
In the forests of British Columbia, where recent wildfires have sent smoke across borders and dimmed blue summer skies, a series of studies from the past 30 year argue that large, old trees send resources and messages to the seedlings (幼苗) around them. The “mothering” could, apparently, help burned landscapes recover faster and improve the flexibility of natural systems overall. The idea seems to borrow from bedtime tales about ancient trees and the forests they tend, prove beliefs that all types of creatures cultivate their young and vouch for the natural goodness of nature, where teamwork wins over competition.
The term “mother tree” was coined in the 2000s by a Canadian scientist Suzanne Simard, who grew up in a family of loggers in British Columbia. In her book Finding the Mother Tree, Simard describes a childhood spent wandering through the forest, gaining keen insight into the close connections between long-lived trees and the ecosystems they inhabit. Her childhood experiences and decades of scientific research led her to draw a connection that was somewhat revolutionary in the traditional thinking that species must compete to survive. Simard proposed that large trees that are hundreds or even thousands of years old can send carbon, nutrients, water, and even alarm signals to young plants via a network of underground fungi (真菌). She describes these trees as “mothers” in her writing, and argues that they are essential in making forests around the planet better suited to survive climate change.
“We need to preserve the legacies, including the mother trees, their networks, and the genetic material, so they can pass their wisdom onto the next generation of trees and they can survive the future stresses coming down the road,” Simard said.
But some researchers warn that the mother trees viewpoint is ahead of the science. “There are lots of important ecological roles for big trees in the forest,” says Justine Karst, a professor. “But there is really no solid evidence supporting the popularized idea that these trees, acting as passive channels in the soil, direct fungi to perform specific tasks.”
28.What does the first paragraph serve as_______
A.Presenting a novel concept.
B.Describing a serious wildfire.
C.Telling interesting fairy tales.
D.Criticizing some ridiculous beliefs.
29.What does the underlined phrase “vouch for” in Paragraph 1 mean
A.Figure out. B.Put forward.
C.Turn down. D.Back up.
30.What is the core of Suzanne’s theory of “mother tree”
A.Large trees have human-like wisdom.
B.Long-lived trees are a kind of legacy.
C.Trees cooperate in surviving climate change.
D.Mother trees sacrifice themselves for young plants.
31.What’s Karst’s attitude towards the role of mother trees
A.Approving. B.Critical.
C.Doubtful. D.Sympathetic.
Giant pandas are among the most lovable animals alive today. Unlike their relatives, such as the polar bear, pandas don’t eat meat but survive on a diet of only bamboo. So why and how have pandas abandoned their taste for meat to pick up a vegetarian diet
Pandas today don’t eat meat. However, they’ve kept much of their meat-eating adaptations from times past. Their digestive systems have not changed much from their meat-eating days. Out of the huge 12.5 kg of bamboo they eat in a single day, only about 17% of it is digested. To survive, pandas eat large amounts of bamboo while having a low-metabolic (新陈代谢的),lazy lifestyle to make up for the poor energy return.
The giant panda’s shift to a vegetarian diet is in line with the inactivation of a specific gene-Taslrl, which provides them with the ability to taste certain amino acids (氨基酸) abundant in meat. Its inactivation in pandas would lead to their dietary change.
Pandas have evolved to a great degree to cope with their relatively recent bamboo-eating lifestyle. Pandas must seize long and thin pieces of bamboo shoots. To assist with this, they have developed a long “fake-thumb” (伪拇指). So giant pandas have six fingers in each paw which provides better support for them to seize object such as bamboo in one paw quickly. Researchers have found that the surface of the panda’s tongue is different. While other bears and many meat-eating animals have smooth tongues, pandas have evolved tiny projections on the surface of their tongues that serve to file down food. This is especially useful for pandas as they remove the outer cover of bamboo.
Time will tell if pandas will adapt and survive, go back to eating meat, or disappear in the wild. Whatever the future holds, we can be grateful that, for the time being, we get to share our planet with these adorable animals.
32.Why are the numbers mentioned in paragraph 2
A.To illustrate the variety of food.
B.To represent the evolutionary rule of pandas.
C.To describe the changes of living environment.
D.To show the ineffectiveness of digestive system.
33.What caused pandas’ change in diet
A.The low-metabolic ability.
B.The amino acids in meat.
C.The Taslrl gene’s inactivation.
D.The supplies of bamboo.
34.What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 4 refer to
A.Seizing bamboo shoots.
B.The low energy return.
C.Developing more fingers.
D.The vegetarian diet.
35.Which aspect of pandas does paragraph 4 focus on
A.The preference for bamboo.
B.The evolutionary feature in eating.
C.The unique lifestyle.
D.The special appearance.
Many people changed residences and are eager to get familiar with their new neighbors. Here’s a quick refresher on making the most of neighborhood relationships.
Begin at the beginning. Building good neighborly relationships starts when you or someone else moves into the area. If a new neighbor moves in, be proactive (主动的) and welcome them to the neighborhood. 36 . Consider taking a plate of cookies or a small housewarming gift. Share your contact information and offer to answer any questions they may have about the community, including your favorite restaurants or the best local service providers.
37 . Don’t create things that are unpleasant to look at or allow your property’s condition to affect the value of neighboring homes adversely (不利地). Being kind to those around you includes keeping your yard tidy, removing snow from your sidewalks, and collecting trash and recycling bins after the truck has passed.
Be inclusive. If you are hosting a large party, consider extending invitations to your neighbors. During the holiday season, remember the people next door with a card, a homemade goodie, or an offer of assistance. Give without expectations. 38 .
Allow people to be human. 39 , and it’s impossible to know what others are going through. Don’t be too quick to assume a sligh (轻蔑) is personal or intended.
Accept it. If you have tried your best to resolve a conflict without success, let it go. Sadly, some people won’t like you whatever you do. And you aren’t going to enjoy some people. 40 . Be pleasant anyway, and be thankful that you get to live your life and they get to live theirs.
A.Maintain your space
B.Be the first to stop by and say hello
C.It’s easier to accept it and move on
D.Everyone has a bad day now and then
E.Take steps to ensure it won’t happen again
F.Let others know you are thinking of them
G.Some neighbors are more easygoing than others

Born in a poor neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan, John always had a hard life, growing up with a single mother, who worked two jobs to make ends meet. He had no father figure, no role model and no tutor. He had to make a living for himself while facing the dangers and temptations of the streets.
He had a great passion for football, though. He loved watching it on TV, playing it with his friends, and even dreaming about it at night. He had a natural talent for the game, with speed, strength, agility (敏捷) and vision. He could read the quarterback’s eyes, anticipate the receiver’s route, and make the perfect tackle or interception (拦截). He was eager to be a professional football player playing in the National Football League (NFL) and his lifelong ambition was to become a superstar in sports. He was burning to make his mother proud, to give her a better life and to escape the poverty and violence surrounding them. But despite his incredible talent, he always lacked the confidence. Beyond this, he had no opportunity or hope.
Day by day, he became discouraged and had no option but to go to a low-performing high school where there was no football program, no equipment, and even no professional coach. He was ready to give up his dream to settle for a life of mediocrity (平庸). But then, he met Coach Carter.
Coach Carter was a former NFL player, who had retired after a successful career. He had won two Super Bowls with the team, regarded as one of the best safeties of all time. He had moved back to Detroit after his retirement, and had started a youth football program in John’s neighborhood. He had observed John play in a pickup game one day, and had been impressed by his skills and potential. He planned to offer John a spot in his team, and help him achieve his dream. W: Hi, Mark. Do you have any advice for young writers out there
M: Well, people often write their first book using the word “I”. And they’re likely to write best about what they know, to be most convincing, but bear in mind that if you do that, there might be a lot of stuff you can’t include. And your readers may want to know about other things that you don’t see.
W: Is there anything else
M: Well, it’s very dull if you set everything in the same place, or always have them wearing the same clothes. Their choice of clothes can tell you about a character’s personality. Plus an important aspect of writing fiction is the use of symbols, like the weather representing how people are feeling. But resist the urge to spell everything out.

Four cars hit each other and because of that, there were long delays between London and Guildford. It doesn’t look very good on the M22. A truck encountered an engine failure near Swindon about three hours ago and there was a huge traffic jam. Peter from Bristol just called to say that there is a long line of vehicles now. So if you need to get to Swindon this evening, you’d better go on the main road — the A23. The M1 is looking a lot better today. There were no delays when I last checked. Unusually there aren’t any problems on the trains today. If you are going away this weekend, lots of trains are working normally, so check before you go. If you are flying from Gatwick airport, please phone your airline before you set off. The computer systems weren’t working this morning and many flights were canceled today. Jackie and Bob phoned to say their flight to India was delayed by over twelve hours and they had to check into a hotel near the airport for the night. But I’m pleased to see that they’ve boarded their plane now and are on their way.

根据第一段中“Growing up in Wyoming, she was well aware of the lack of health care resources in rural areas. Access to in-depth care for cancer patients is hard to get. She’s worked throughout her career to change that.(在Wyoming州长大的她非常清楚农村地区缺乏医疗资源。癌症患者很难获得深入的护理。她的整个职业生涯都在努力改变这种状况。)”可知在Wyoming州农村癌症患者最缺乏的是医疗资源和深入的医疗护理,即他们最需要的是医疗保健。故选A。
根据第三段“And now Monica serves as the vice president of the Coalition (联盟) of Cancer Cooperative Groups (CCCG) — an international network of individuals who work to improve the quality of life and survival of cancer patients by increasing participation in cancer clinical trials.(现在,Monica担任癌症合作组织联盟(CCCG)的副主席。CCCG是一个由个人组成的国际网络,通过增加对癌症临床试验的参与来提高癌症患者的生活质量和生存率。)”以及第四段“She said, ‘One of the really important things is, we’re trying to make sure that cancer clinical trials can get to every single patient who needs them in my own state.’ The coalition set up sites in northern and southern Wyoming that are able to run clinical trials. Before those trials became available, patients would usually go to Denver or Salt Lake City — a three-to-seven-hour drive.(她说:‘真正重要的一件事是,我们正在努力确保癌症临床试验能够惠及我所在州每一位需要的患者。’该联盟在Wyoming州北部和南部设立了能够进行临床试验的站点。在这些试验开始之前,患者通常会去丹佛或盐湖城,车程三到七小时。)”可知,Monica通过提供临床试验来帮助癌症患者。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“In addition to the clinical trials, Monica said that technology’s progress like better cell phone and internet service in the mountains of Wyoming, as well as social media, has helped rural residents stay in touch with loved ones and medical professionals despite their distance. She is trying to advocate strongly for those changes to continue.(除了临床试验之外,Monica说,技术的进步,比如Wyoming州山区更好的手机和互联网服务,以及社交媒体,已经帮助农村居民与亲人和医疗专业人员保持联系,尽管他们相隔遥远。她正在努力大力倡导这些改革继续下去。)”以及最后一段“‘I still consider myself part of Wyoming and I am very devoted to making sure that patients can get access to care.’(‘我仍然认为自己是Wyoming州的一员,我大力致力于确保患者能够获得医疗。’)”
根据第一段“Monica Bertagnolli is an oncologist (肿瘤学家) at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School. Growing up in Wyoming, she was well aware of the lack of health care resources in rural areas. Access to in-depth care for cancer patients is hard to get. 【答案】28.A 29.D 30.C 31.C
根据第一段中的“In the forests of British Columbia, where recent wildfires have sent smoke across borders and dimmed blue summer skies, a series of studies from the past 30 year argue that large, old trees send resources and messages to the seedlings (幼苗) around them. The “mothering” could, apparently, help burned landscapes recover faster and improve the flexibility of natural systems overall. 故选A项。
根据第一段中的“The idea seems to borrow from bedtime tales about ancient trees and the forests they tend, prove beliefs that all types of creatures cultivate their young and vouch for the natural goodness of nature, where teamwork wins over competition.(这一观点似乎借鉴了关于古树及其守护森林的睡前故事,证明了所有生物都会培育后代的信念,并vouch for自然界中团队合作胜过竞争的天然善意)”可知,“vouch for”与前文“prove beliefs(证明信念)”并列,表达该理论“支持”或“印证”了自然界中合作优于竞争的理念。
根据第二段中的“Simard proposed that large trees that are hundreds or even thousands of years old can send carbon, nutrients, water, and even alarm signals to young plants via a network of underground fungi (真菌). She describes these trees as “mothers” in her writing, and argues that they are essential in making forests around the planet better suited to survive climate change.
【答案】32.D 33.C 34.A 35.B
根据第二段中的“Out of the huge 12.5 kg of bamboo they eat in a single day, only about 17% of it is digested. (它们一天要吃掉12.5公斤的竹子,其中只有17%能被消化。)”可知,熊猫进食量很大,但是吸收量很小,通过数据说明熊猫的消化系统效率很低。故选D项。
33.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The giant panda’s shift to a vegetarian diet is in line with the inactivation of a specific gene-Taslrl, which provides them with the ability to taste certain amino acids (氨基酸) abundant in meat.(大熊猫转向素食与特定基因Taslrl的失活相一致,该基因使它们能够品尝肉类中富含的某些氨基酸。)”
根据第四段中的“Pandas must seize long and thin pieces of bamboo shoots.(大熊猫必须抓住又长又细的竹笋。)” 故选A项。
根据第四段中的“Pandas have evolved to a great degree to cope with their relatively recent bamboo-eating lifestyle. Pandas must seize long and thin pieces of bamboo shoots.(大熊猫已经进化到很大程度,以应对它们相对较新的吃竹子的生活方式。大熊猫必须抓住又长又细的竹笋。)”和“Researchers have found that the surface of the panda’s tongue is different. While other bears and many meat-eating animals have smooth tongues, pandas have evolved tiny projections on the surface of their tongues that serve to file down food.( 研究人员发现,大熊猫舌头的表面是不同的。虽然其他熊类和许多食肉动物的舌头都很光滑,但熊猫的舌头表面已经进化出了微小的突起,可以把食物锉下来。)”可知,为了应对新的饮食方式的改变,熊猫的爪子进化出“伪拇指”,同时研究也发现,熊猫的舌头表面为了进食,进化出很多微小的突起物,由此可以推断,第四段主要介绍的是熊猫饮食进化的特点,均是为了适应新的饮食的变化。故选B项。
