When I moved to northern New Jersey in 2012 and took a software test engineering job in midtown Manhattan, I suddenly found myself with an hour-long bus commute. I’d solved newspaper crossword puzzles for many years, but I had little patience and wasn’t very good. So when I started my crosswording again during those long trips, I was determined to become a better solver. However, after noticing that all of The New York Times puzzles had bylines, I figured, “Why couldn’t one of them be mine ”
I bought crossword construction software and a dictionary of valid crossword puzzle entries. I started with a blank 15x15 grid. After reading, rereading, and more rereading of my puzzle, I decided that it was as good as it was ever going to be. So I sent it off to The Times and anxiously waited for their response. Several weeks later, I received an email from a staffer writing on behalf of editor Will Shortz. His answer was basically, “Thanks, but no thanks.” What’s worse, I received nearly the same rejection from Shortz and his colleagues for the next several puzzles I submitted.
Then I found my way to the Crossword Puzzle Collaboration Directory group on Facebook. In the group I connected with Mark, a more experienced constructor who became my teacher. After making some edits for my 21x21 grid at Mark’s suggestion, I sent the puzzle off to The New York Times. A few months later, I got something new in my inbox: an actual acceptance message from The New York Times! They changed some of the clues to be more straightforward. Anyway, my hard work finally paid off. Naturally, I told all my friends and family to get a copy of the paper on the publication date, March 21, 2021.
Now I’ve made a lot in my spare time. Even if constructing a puzzle feels like an impossible task from time to time, it’s probably not. Very few things in life are truly impossible.
24. Why was the author determined to become a better solver
A. Because the author likes the hour-long bus commute.
B. Because the author wants to create a construction software.
C. Because the author thinks the word games is too challenging.
D. Because the author wants to create crossword puzzles by himself.
25. What can we know from Paragraph2
A. The author feels overjoyed.
B. The author feels down about the response.
C. The editor anxiously waited for their response.
D. The author doesn’t want to wait for the response .
26. Which word can be used to describe the author
A. Independent B. Hospitable C. Determined D. Cultured
27. What can we learn from the author’s story
A. Education is the key to success B. Time and tide wait for no man.
C. Where there is a will, there is a way. D. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

Away is a science fiction television series created by Andrew Hinderaker. The show imagines what would happen on the first manned mission to Mars, as flown by an international team of Americans, Russians and Chinese astronauts as well as those of other nationalities.
The show is based on Away, an article about astronaut Scott Kelly, who became the first space traveler to spend a year in space.
“Chris Jones goes into detail about how the International Space Station came to be. “ Hinderaker said. “And then he talks about Scott Kelly. He was up there when there was an emergency with his family, and he tried to deal with that from a distance. I then added Jason and Matt to this series, with Hillary Swank’s character Emma at the center of it.”
The Esquire article also goes into detail about the impact a long time in space has on the human body. Some of the things Kelly found happening to his body are similar to those that happen to Emma and the crew of Away. Kelly experienced bone density loss, for example, as his body dealt with living in a zero-gravity world .
In order to make Away as close as possible to real space travel, the show worked with a number of experts when designing the Atlas. According to the Los Angeles Times, the artificial gravity in the crew’s residence, for example, is based on research and suggestions made in real life on the subject.
During that same interview, Hinderaker talked about asking a NASA employee how soon humans could go to Mars if there was enough money and international cooperation. He said, “Oh, we could go tomorrow. That was so powerful and that’s really part of why we chose to put the show in a very near future world.”
28.What can we know from Away
A. The first astronaut to land on Mars.
B. Humans who set up the International Space Station on Mars.
C. A group of astronauts from different countries who travel to Mars.
D. An astronaut who travels to Mars and lives there for a year.
29. What happened to Scott Kelly in Paragraph3
A. He wants to call his family on Mars.
B. He felt sick with living in zero gravity.
C. He missed his family very much on Mars.
D. He had to solve the family problem immediately.
30. What is the key factor to make the show as credible as possible
A. They ask the experts for help to make it real.
B. The cast make the series in a real space station.
C. They lived and worked in the real spaceship themselves.
D. The cast used the artificial gravity in the crew’s residence.
31. We can infer from Hinderaker’s words
A. We humans can go to Mars.
B. It is difficulty to go to Mars.
C. We don’t have the ability to go to Mars.
D. We can travel to Mars whenever we want
D
A plague of rats is creating havoc in Karumba, a small coastal town in Queensland, Australia, where hordes of rodents (啮齿动物) are chewing on electrical wires and otherwise eating everything they can find — and washing up dead in massive numbers, creating a literal stink in the community.
The long-haired rat eats shoots and leaves — and then leaves for the north, seeking more food, researcher Emma Gray of the school of biology and environmental science at Queensland University of Technology told NPR. Like an army, the mass of rats also has a very effective, and literal, force multiplier. Gray says they can “produce 12 young every three weeks when conditions are good!”
“They come in waves,” Karumba resident Jon Jensen told the ABC radio station in Brisbane. “They almost seem trained and organized. They’re in numbers, mate, and they swim around in the rivers like little puppy dogs.” Everywhere they go, the rats eat — and eat. “They’re hungry, they’ve swum a long way, they’ve come across land a long way,” Jensen said, “and they’re eating anything and everything they can get their hands on.”
Queensland’s topography, with a river system that twists its way to the northern coast, funnels the rodents toward the shore — and dead or alive, hordes of them arrive in Karumba, a fishing and port community on the Gulf of Carpentaria. Once they’ve arrived, there’s little anyone can do to curtail the plague. Traps have been set up, he said, but in the face of such multitudes, the measure “really is a token gesture.”
However, “as quickly as the rats irrupt or ’boom’ in numbers, so too do they decline or ‘bust,’” Gray said. The decline can be linked to several factors, from a change to dry conditions to increases in inbreeding and disease — and predators that feast on the rodent influx. Feral cats, for instance, are eating well. “Generally during a rat irruption, the area also sees a significant increase in the number of predatory birds,” Gray said. He added, “This year we have them in all their glory and can’t wait for them to disappear.”
32. Which of the following can probably describe the rats in Karumba
A. Untrained & disorganized. B. Social & reproductive.
C. Abnormal & digestive. D. Domestic & overeating.
33. Why does the rats’ migration end in Karumba
A. Because geological features of the river system bring rats there.
B. Because there is enough food in Karumba for rats such as fishes.
C. Because the northern coast in Karumba provides habitats for rats.
D. Because the climate of the north is suitable for their inbreeding.
34. What does the author mean by “a token gesture” in paragraph 4
A. An impossible action. B. A worthwhile task.
C. An ineffective method. D. A favorable behavior.
35. What is the main purpose of the last paragraph
A. To describe the consequence of the plague.
B. To analyze the reasons why rats are increasing.
C. To imply a promising result of the plague.
D. To show an evident upsurge in predatory birds.

Mrs. Thompson, a retired teacher, was well-known for her insightful advice and genuine willingness to help others. Many high school students often turned to her for guidance and as her neighbor, me included.
One afternoon, feeling troubled and uncertain about my future after a disappointing exam, I decided to knock on Mrs. Thompson’s door.
“I don’t know what I’m doing with my life,” I admitted, my eyes fixed on the floor. “It feels like everyone else has it all figured out, and I’m just stuck.“ My voice trembled with sadness and a hint of fear.
I had bombed my last math test, and it felt like that failure stayed in every corner of my mind, increasing my anxiety about college examination and what I might want to pursue. While my friends seemed to advance effortlessly through their studies, I was struggling to stay afloat. The feeling that I was falling behind only deepened my sense of hopelessness.
Mrs. Thompson listened carefully, her face a picture of calm and understanding. Without saying much, she handed me a small tomato seedling (苗) in a pot. The tiny plant, with its delicate green leaves, seemed to symbolize a slight sign of hope.
“Let’s plant this in the garden,” she said gently. “Water it every day and make sure it gets enough sunlight. But for a whole week, don’t focus on its progress. Just trust that it’s growing.”
Every day, I faithfully watered the little seedling, as if I was putting my own hopes into it. I carefully ensured it got the right amount of sunlight, positioning it just so under the sun’s rays. With great self-control, I resisted the urge to examine it too closely. As the days went by, I felt a mix of eagerness and impatience, like a child waiting for a long-promised gift, longing to see some sign that my efforts were making a difference.
注意:
续写词数应为150个左右;

One possible version
“Let’s go to check on the plant,” Mrs. Thompson said to me a week later. With a heart full of anticipation, I followed her to the garden. When we reached the spot where we’d planted the seedling, I was amazed. The once - tiny plant had grown significantly. Its leaves were greener and more robust, and it stood taller, reaching towards the sky. Mrs. Thompson looked at me and smiled, “You see, just like this seedling, growth doesn’t always happen at a speed we can immediately notice. Your efforts in studying are like the care you gave this plant. They’re working, even if you can’t see the results right away.”
One day, as I bent down to water it, a tiny yellow flower caught my eye. A sense of joy and accomplishment washed over me. That little flower was a symbol of hope and proof that my care had paid off. It made me realize that just as the seedling needed time and consistent care to bloom, so did I in my studies. I no longer felt as lost or hopeless. From then on, I faced my study challenges with newfound confidence, knowing that with perseverance, my efforts would surely lead to beautiful “blooms” in my future.

由文章第四段中“Queensland’s topography, with a river system that twists its way to the northern coast, funnels the rodents toward the shore — and dead or alive, hordes of them arrive in Karumba, a fishing and port community on the Gulf of Carpentaria. Once they’ve arrived, there’s little anyone can do to curtail the plague. 故 选A。
由文章第四段中“Once they’ve arrived, there’s little anyone can do to curtail the plague. Traps have been set up, he said, but in the face of such multitudes, the measure “really is a token gesture.”(一旦它们(老鼠)来了,几乎没人能阻止这场鼠灾。他说 人们已经设置了捕鼠器,但面对如此庞大的鼠群,这项措施“真的只是 a token gesture”)” 可知,设置陷阱在大量老鼠面前起不到什么作用,这种措施只是象征性的。所以 a token gesture 意为“象征性的行动”,即“无效的方法”。C 选项“An ineffective method (无效的方法)” 符合题意。故选 C。
35. 推理判断题。由文章最后一段“However, “as quickly as the rats irrupt or ’boom’ in numbers, so too do they decline or ‘bust,’” Gray said.

“it”的形容词性物主代词是“its”,所以填“its”。
句子的主语是“the International Festival of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Chengdu, China”,谓语是“has held”和“has become”,而“receive the attention from both home and abroad”是伴随状语,表示这个节日在举办和成为国际活动的同时,还获得了国内外的关注。“the International Festival of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Chengdu, China”和“receive”之间是主动关系,所以要用现在分词“receiving”作伴随状语。

Text 6
W: ⑥It’s said that a researcher named 16 newly discovered spiders after some pop songs.
M: Really Naming spiders after pop songs seems strange.
W: I disagree. ⑥I think it’s an appealing way of naming spiders. It can draw public attention to science. For example, ⑦in 2019, a deep-sea creature was named after the character Dorotea from the novel Don Quixote.
M: I know a new insect species was named after the Chinese poet Su Shi in 2024. But I think such names might cause misunderstandings.

M: Where can you experience sound healing

Text 10
W: The Worcester Public Library announced that through the end of March, people who have lost or damaged a book or other borrowed items can bring a photograph, drawing or magazine clipping of a cat, and make their library cards work again without paying fines. The library called the program March Meowness, a way to forgive people who lost or damaged borrowed items by accident. Jason Homer, the executive director of the library, said in an interview on Monday that about 400 people had their library accounts unblocked and could borrow books again after bringing in their pictures or drawings of cats. In one case, a cat-less 7-year-old boy, who lost the book Captain Underpants, had his library card work again after the staff gave him paper and a pencil to draw a cat.
Like many public libraries in the United States, the Worcester Public Library is trying to encourage people to return there after the pandemic. The library had previously tried to raise the number of visitors with canned food drives. The library staff held meetings for several months to come up with different creative ways to get people back through the library doors. After these meetings, the Meowness program took shape. While the library had previously stopped charging fines for late returns, many people who faced fees for lost items simply stayed away. One woman named Julie, who had lost library DVDs by accident, regained access to her account with a photograph of a cat.
