The pond is silent until the first cry: “Found something!” Over the next hour, the team of 15, all over age 65 and all women, hunts for rubbish across Mares Pond on Cape Cod in Massachusetts.
These are the Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage (OLAUG). Since 2017, the group, which was founded by Susan Baur and accepts only older women, has made it its mission to remove rubbish from ponds across Cape Cod. As a lifelong nature lover, Baur had begun swimming in ponds as a safer alternative to the ocean. However, between mud, darkness and snapping turtles, the world of the pond was at first one of anxiety for her. The only way to keep her courage up was to rely on markers.
“I’d swim to the golf ball, and then swim to the drowned tree, and to the beer can,” she says. Eventually, Baur realized she didn’t need the markers anymore—and that they were multiplying. In 2017, she rounded up two friends and approached a stranger with a kayak (皮艇), and together they cleared litter from a pond. Soon others joined them, and, like Baur, they found a sense of wonder in the pond cleanups.
While many outsiders have expressed their gratitude for cleaning up the ponds, a number have questioned why they refer to themselves as “old ladies.” “You should call yourselves the Lovely Ladies Against Underwater Garbage.” Baur recalls being told. Although she admits that it wasn’t initially a conscious choice, she now believes that the “old lady” identity is a crucial part of what the group is about. “Over 65, if you’re healthy enough to do what we’re doing, it is the age of gratitude,” Baur says. “You are so grateful that you can still do this. You’re just grateful anyway, for the trees and clean water.”
Part of the goal of OLAUG is to demonstrate that older women, working as a team, can do a lot more than people might think. Criticism aside, the most common response is “I want to join you.” And after that first dive, the new recruits’ excitement is infectious. They come back with their hearts beating.
4.Why did Baur choose ponds as the swimming spot

Data-center chips (芯片) used to be a dominant business. Now the business is filled with competition. The semiconductor hardware that makes the servers (服务器) powerful is fast becoming the hardest-fought front in the battle over the $600 billion global market for computer chips.
Today the market for server processors is getting bigger, more crowded and more complex. Intel, which both designs and manufactures semiconductors, obtains 33% of its incomes from server chips, up from 29% in 2016. Professional chip designers are expanding their server-chip businesses even more quickly. Data centers now make up 39% of the sales of Nvidia, up from 7% six years ago.
Two factors explain the competitive storm. The first is the market’s size and growth. Although sales of personal computers, smartphones, and the chips inside them are expected to fall this year, server demand is forecast to rise. The cloud giants are expected to build more than 300 new data centers around the world, which will require an awful lot of chips.
The second reason is the growing complexity of what the cloud does. It no longer acts merely like a large external hard drive. It is full of new capabilities that require different chip architectures. In some cases, that means changing existing technology for new purposes. Nvidia’s graphics (图形) processing units (GPUS) used to make computer animation lifelike, but now are also excellent at running artificial-intelligence models.
All-new designs are also emerging. The cloud giants, looking to boost performance and cut costs, are busily adapting energy-efficient designs. However, ironically for a hardware business, one clear winner from the cloud boom is the firms that offer the best software. But this peaceful co-existence may not last forever. All this should worry companies like Intel and Nvidia. Anyway, for cloud users, it almost certainly means better, cheaper and ever more invisible services.
8.What is the purpose of listing the figures in Paragraph 2
A.To stress the importance of independent chip design.
B.To highlight some companies are making huge profit.
C.To prove manufacture is the primary productive force.
D.To indicate the prospect of the market for server processors.
9.What may bring about the competitive storm in the chip market
① The depressive semiconductor industry. ② The great demand for data-center chips.
③ The wider use of the cloud. ④The increasingly cheap labor.
A.①③ B.②④ C.②③ D.③④
10.What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A.Serving as an external hard drive.
B.Expanding the server-chip business.
C.Designing advanced processing units.
D.Developing different chip architectures.
11.What might happen to the future chip market
A.There will be less and less competitions.
B.Cloud users will pay more for services.
C.Software companies will be replaced.
D.Technical innovation is underway.
Recently, some 220 flamingos (火烈鸟) have been found dead in the province of Catamarca in northwestern Argentina due to bird flu, a highly infectious and deadly viral disease that naturally spreads through wild aquatic (水栖的) birds, but can also infect other bird species, such as domestic poultry.
The H5N1 bird flu has spread in more than 80 countries since 2022. Around the globe, there have been reports of bird flu outbreaks in various mammals, detection of the virus in domestic cats and dogs, as well as a few cases in humans. There is a risk that the infected birds may spread the disease to new areas during migration (迁徙). Originally, the H5N1 spread from North America to South America through migratory birds in three months, according to Dr. Johanna Harvey, a researcher from the University of Maryland. “Now, it only takes one infected bird to pass on the virus to a whole flock (群) in a matter of days,” Harvey said, “Flamingos are known to be highly gregarious (群居的) animals that live in large flocks.”
Harvey’s concerns are that birds are clearly continuing to spread it, and it’s not going away. Besides, as the number of deaths piles up, the impact on populations and potentially even entire species is really great. “I don’t think the true degree of loss here is well understood and has not been documented, because it’s really hard to do.” Harvey added.
Since December 2021, 11 cases of the H5N1 have been reported in humans globally. “For people who interact with wild birds, there doesn’t seem to be a huge risk to them, because the number of human cases have remained small globally, so we’re not too worried about that.” said Dr. Krysten Schuler, an assistant research professor, “But the mutation (变异) potential and the wide distribution of this virus are the major risk factors.”
There is not much that can be done to stop the spread of the virus, but Schuler recommends that people report any unusual animal deaths without an obvious cause to their state wildlife agencies, so they can be informed of what areas the disease is spreading to. “If there is any potential to do something about it, our best option is right at the beginning.” Schuler said.
12.What is paragraph 1 of the text mainly about
A.The unknown cause of flamingos’ death.
B.The effect of bird flu on other bird species.
C.The outbreak of bird flu in wild aquatic birds.
D.The accurate identification of virus in flamingos.
13.What causes the virus to spread rapidly according to Harvey
A.The social flamingos’ moving in large groups.
B.Various mammals that have caught the disease.
C.The virus developing into a more powerful type.
D.The rising number of infected domestic cats and dogs.
14.What does Dr. Krysten Schuler suggest
A.People should make efforts to guarantee the safety of flamingos.
B.Abnormal animal deaths should be reported to related agencies.
C.More natural habitats should be restored for migratory birds.
D.Effective measures should be adopted to stop the virus spread.
15.What can we infer from the text
A.The virus’ outbreak and global spread concern experts.
B.The virus has impacted greatly on the entire species.
C.People have no chance to be infected with the virus.
D.The H5N1 bird flu spreads easily between people.
How to donate to a charity with purpose and intention
Generally, donating to a charity is a lot like voting for an issue you believe in. If you’re wondering which organizations to support or how much money to donate, here is some advice to help you make the right decisions.●Make a list of the issues you care about.
Make a list of the causes that matter to you. 16 If you’re not sure about what to write down, think about challenges you’d like to help overcome. Maybe you had a family member who was suffering from an illness. Is there some way to support them Or look at the social events that are happening. How do you want to give back In what specific way ●Use your household budget to decide how much to give.
A more intentional approach is recommended: come up with an amount based on your household budget. 17 Charities often suggest $20 a month or $150 one time. You can also donate a specific percentage of your annual income to charity. Some giving organizations suggest one percent — big enough to make an impact, small enough not to notice in your budget, while others suggest a more generous amount: 10 percent. If you want to give more, go for it.
● 18
When you support a cause, you may want to give to both a small, local organization and a large, national or international organization. Large global charities often have more staff, more aid, more resources and more knowledge from experienced workers who know how to mobilize on a massive scale during emergencies. 19 The people behind local nonprofits often live and work where they serve. For that reason, they are able to deliver long-term solutions that are tailor-made to the needs of their communities.
And don’t forget: your money isn’t the only way to support causes you care about. Volunteering is a great way to give back. 20
A.Donate to a mix of charities.
B.Assess the scale of the charities.
C.Be careful of any fundraising plan that seem urgent.
D.Smaller, local charity groups also have their strengths.
E.This can help you narrow down the list of your concerns
F.Sit down with your family and figure out what you can afford to give.
G.It allows you to create a personal relationship with an organization and its work.

Experiences at a Sport Meet
I used to be very active in sports and games when I was in primary school. I won the B Division long jump and was a decent sprinter (短跑运动员). As a result, I was chosen to represent the school in the long jump and relay events (接力赛) at the District Sports Meet.
The meeting lasted two days. I had no events scheduled for the first day. So I kept myself busy by watching the others compete. We weren’t allowed to go near the VIP stand as kids, so I had to observe the proceedings from afar. Large tents were provided for the young competitors opposite the VIP stand on the other side of the track. My school team was assigned the last tent that was furthest from the track. It was just our luck but we made the best use of what we had.
The next day, I was getting ready for my events. The long jump was scheduled for the early afternoon, followed by the 8×50 m relay later in the afternoon. I thought I was a pretty good jumper, but as the competition began, I realized I was vastly outclassed (远超于), 3.65 m was not bad. Then there was the typhoon, which jumped over 4 meters! That was quite the accomplishment for a ten-year-old boy. The fact that he was wearing spikes (钉鞋) made things even more difficult for the other competitors. We finished our jumps, and I came in fourth place, just missing out on a medal.
That was disappointing, but I reminded myself that we still had a chance in the 8×50 m relay, for which I was assigned to run the fifth leg. The race date arrived. We filed into our assigned spots and prepared for the race. After a tense minute or so, I heard the starter’s gun go off. When the first runners took off, I watched with bated breath (屏息以待) as my team runners kept up with the others. As they got closer, I realized we were at least in second place.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As the baton (接力棒) approached me, my heart pounded with anticipation.

The moment it touched my palm, I took off like a shot, pushing my legs as hard as I could. The wind rushed past my ears, and the cheers from the spectators seemed to fuel my speed. I could see the other runners out of the corner of my eye, but I focused on my own path, determined not to let my team down. I gave it my all, sprinting with every ounce of energy I had.
In the end, we crossed the finish line in second place. A wave of elation swept over me and my teammates. We hugged each other tightly, jumping up and down in excitement.
