As autumn approaches and we prepare for a new school year, the Education Division at the National Geographic Society (NGS) is looking forward to a new year of learning, storytelling, and opportunity. In all of our work, NGS Education remains committed to the Society’s mission to inspire and protect our planet through science, storytelling, and, of course, education.
Reflecting on my career path. I initially set my sights on becoming a lawyer. However, as time went by, my interests shifted, and I was drawn towards the worlds of art and teaching. Eventually, I managed to integrate both passions, becoming an artist and a teacher. Coupled with a deep interest in learning technologies, traveling and living in different parts of the world, I would say that the little girl, who grew up in NE Washington, DC and Montgomery County, Maryland, continued to expand on her dreams.
My first paying job was working at an art store in Wheaton Plaza in Maryland. I would talk to customers, demonstrate how to use different types of art supplies and then help them to select the right supplies for their projects.
It feels like everything I have ever done in my professional life has led me to this position, the Chief Education Officer at the NGS. I have a deep love for learning and helping people connect with their highest aspirations and goals for themselves. Having the opportunity to listen to learners’ ideas, aspirations and questions and to connect them with the information they need, keeps me deeply engaged in my work. And what truly excites me about my role is co-creating solutions with learners to achieve their goals. In addition, the dedicated people in the Education Division, the way everyone approaches their work and their willingness to put explorers, educators and learners first really energize me.
My hope is that we can provide rich content, strong immersive experiences and innovative learning to design globally relevant solutions, which sparks curiosity and action from educators, learners and communities for the sake of our planet.

The sequel (续编) to the block extraordinary Chinese animation film, Ne Zha, was released on Chinese New Year’s day, that is, Jan 29.
Like many other Chinese movies, Ne Zha 2 is also based on a Chinese mythological figure — protective deity (神) Ne Zha. The film’s script is based on a popular 17th century Chinese novel, the Investiture of the Gods, which is one of the first major literary works to feature “deities” and “demons” in Taoism and Buddhism.
How come films based on Chinese mythology have become massive hits at the box office Ne Zha 2symbolizes rebellion. The image of Ne Zha has been modified from the traditional tragic hero “returning to his father” to a modern rebel who “changes his destiny against God’s will”, which is in line with the spiritual aspirations of today’s youths and their determination to fight against labeling and pursue their goals. This kind of modification breaks the character’s “sacredness” myth, enabling it to resonate with the audience.
The film is a fusion of cultural symbols. It combines punk style, modern colloquialism (俗话), names and other elements such as the “Sichuan-style Mandarin” accent of Master Taiyi who is the tutor of Ne Zha. This practice grafts traditional cultural symbols with popular culture, making the film appealing to the audience. At the same time, it fosters a unique cultural identity.
Ne Zha 2 is a great innovation in visual aesthetics (美感). The movie drives Gen Next Internet of things with 5G and smart technology, with fascinatingly innovative art direction, especially the misty landscape, which enhances the experience of going to the theater. That Ne Zha has been created with utmost care is evident from the fact that the character on the screen maintains its oriental aesthetic mood. Indeed, Ne Zha could become a new cultural brand of China.
The film also illustrates changing family ethics. By transforming NeZha’s parents, Mr and Mrs Li Jing, from traditional, strict parents to loving father and mother who “go against God’s will to protect their son”, the filmmaker reconstructs Chinese family relationships, echoing the younger generation’s pursuit of “family roots” and building a cross-generational emotional connection.
The film demonstrates the technological heroism of Chinese animators, reflecting Chinese film makers’ cultural confidence. Furthermore, the production team has increased the character count threefold from the prequel (前篇), an accomplishment that seems to have impressed audiences. The number of special effects shots in Ne Zha 2 alone surpasses the total number of shots in Ne Zha 1, giving audiences a visually spectacular experience. This reflects a commitment to create a more immersive and awe-inspiring cinematic journey.
28. What is the main theme of the movie “Ne Zha 2 Demon Child Conquers the Sea”
A. A courageous tragic hero returning to his father.
B. A contemporary rebel who does not submit to his given fate.
C. A story about a deity who follows traditional values.
D. A tale of a hero who adheres to societal norms.
29. What can we infer from paragraph 4
A. The film adopts classical Chinese literature exclusively.
B. Modern cultural references are neglected in the film.
C. Traditional mythological elements are solely focused on.
D. The film gives full play to different elements like present-day dialects.
30. What technological advancement is employed in “Ne Zha 2”
A. The use of 2D animation techniques.
B. The reliance on traditional hand-drawn animation.
C. The blend of 5G and smart technology.
D. The adoption of Chinese martial arts.
31. How does the film illustrate the concept of family relationships
A. By portraying Ne Zha’s parents as strict and traditional figures.
B. By ignoring the role of family in Ne Zha’s lifetime.
C. By representing Ne Zha’s parents as affectionate and protective characters.
D. By unfolding Ne Zha as an orphan with no family ties.
D
A new kind of fuel made from the power of the sun, which could revolutionize motoring, has been invented by scientists. The solar-powered technology changes carbon dioxide and water into liquid fuel that can be directly dropped into a vehicle’s engine.
The researchers from the University of Cambridge controlled and used the power of photosynthesis (光合作用) to transform CO2, water and sunlight into multi-carbon fuels — ethanol and propanol (乙醇和丙醇) — in a single step. These fuels have a high energy density and can be easily stored or transported, according to scientists whose work was published in Nature Energy.
“Shining sunlight on the artificial leaves and getting liquid fuel from carbon dioxide and water is an amazing bit of chemistry,” said Dr Rahaman, the new study’s first author. “Normally, when you try to change CO2 into another chemical product, you almost always get CO or syngas, but here, we’ve been able to produce a practical liquid fuel just using the power of the sun.”
They managed this by developing a specific catalyst (催化剂), optimized to allow the artificial leaves to produce more complex chemicals. Unlike fossil fuel, these solar fuels produce net zero carbon emissions, and unlike most bioethanol, they do not take any agricultural land away from food production. “While the technology is only in the laboratory phase, the ‘artificial leaves’ are an important step in the transition away from a fossil fuel-based economy,” the researchers said.
Bioethanol is often regarded as a cleaner alternative to gas since it’s made from plants instead of fossil fuel. The United States is the world’s largest bioethanol producer. Almost 45% of all corn grown in the USA is used for ethanol production.
Currently, the artificial leaves and the specific catalyst are proof of concept devices and demonstrate only limited performance. The researchers are now working to optimize the light absorbers so that they can better absorb sunlight and optimize the catalyst so it can transform more sunlight into fuel. Further work will also be needed so the device can be mass-produced and make large volumes of fuel.
32. What is a potential advantage of the new fuels
A. Accelerating photosynthesis. B. Storing ethanol and propanol.
C. Promoting the use of renewable energy. D. Increasing the speed of current vehicles.
33. What did Dr Rahaman mainly want to show in paragraph 3
A. The components of the artificial leaves.
B. The difficulty of changing CO2 into CO.
C. The innovation of the transformation process.
D. The factors of producing a practical liquid fuel.
34. What did the researchers say about the new fuels
A. They are less economical than fossil fuel.
B. They mark a significant shift from fossil fuel.
C. They are merely appropriate for laboratory use.
D. They require more agricultural land than bioethanol.
35. What does the last paragraph tell us about the artificial leaf technology
A. Its ability to thoroughly replace fossil fuel.
B. Its improving efficiency and production capacity.
C. Its present widespread application and performance.
D. Its immediate impact on the mass-producing artificial leaves.

You can help yourself make wiser choices by visualizing your future self. Below are three ideas to connect with your future self and enhance present decision-making.
36 Researchers have shown that visualizing future events can assist individuals in delaying immediate satisfaction. Interestingly, one doesn’t need to consider the future rewards of such delay; just thinking about the future seems to work. For example, if you’re trying to decide whether to start a project now or postpone it, picture yourself in routine future settings like grocery shopping or an upcoming meeting. ____37____. The more real and vivid the future feels, the more likely you are to make a decision that your future self won’t regret.
Send a message to your future self. FutureMe.org offers a unique service that allows individuals to send emails to their future selves, prompting them to picture what their future selves will be doing and how they will feel about the choices made now. ____38____ What are your hopes for your future self What would your future self thank you for is you committed yourself to certain goals today Psychologist Hal says that even briefly reflecting on what you’d write in such a letter can make you feel more connected to your future self.
Imagine your future self. 39 In one experiment, couch potatoes were asked to imagine either a hoped-for future self who engages in regular exercise and enjoys good health or a feared future self who remains inactive and suffers from health problems. Astonishingly, both visualizations motivated them to get off the couch and exercise more frequently over the next two months compared to a control group that did not imagine a future self. To boost your willpower, imagine two possible future selves: one changing and benefiting and the other unchanging and suffering. ____40____. This can inspire positive changes and help learn from past experiences.
A. Create a future memory.
B. Visualize a future success.
C. Avoid thinking about the future as it may lead to anxiety.
D. Studies show that imagining your future self can increase your present self’s willpower.
E. Moreover, let yourself vividly daydream about how you feel for your past self’s choices.
F. Use this opportunity to tell your future self about your current plans to reach long-term goals.
G. This practice sparks your brain to think more concretely about your current choices’ consequences.

Maggie loved gardening, but her family lived in a small apartment with no outdoor space. Every day after school, she would walk past a community garden and admire vivid flowers and orderly rows of vegetables. The bright colors and fragrant smells filled her with joy and she often wondered what it would be like to have a place of her own to grow plants. Gardening felt like something magical — a way to create life and beauty with her own hands.
One afternoon, as she lingered (流连) by the garden gate, she noticed an elderly man, Mr. Lewis, watering the plants. His movements were slow and cautious as though each drop of water were a gift to the soil. Gathering her courage, Maggie approached him and asked, “Excuse me, can I help you take care of the garden ” Mr. Lewis looked surprised at first, but then a warm smile spread across his face. “Of course,” he said, handing her a small watering can. Maggie’s heart leapt with joy.
From that day on, Maggie visited the garden every afternoon. Mr. Lewis became her mentor, patiently teaching her how to plant seeds, cut bushes and remove weeds. He showed her how to care for different plants, explaining which ones needed more sunlight and which ones grew better in the shade. Maggie quickly fell in love with her new role. The once small act of watering turned into a passion and she eagerly absorbed every bit of knowledge Mr. Lewis shared. Soon, she was planting her own little section in the garden, watching with pride as tiny green sprouts (嫩芽) pushed through the soil.
One day, however, Maggie noticed that some plants were starting to wilt (枯萎). Heart sinking, she walked up to Mr. Lewis and inquired about it. Mr. Lewis let out a deep, heavy sigh and then explained, “The garden is now short on funds. Without money for water, seeds and tools, it will have to close.” At this moment, Maggie felt as if her heart were broken into a million pieces.

What Humanoid Robots’Yangko Dance Brings us
The 2025 Spring Festival Gala was truly amazing especially the robot show, bringing us a visual feast.
On the night of January 28th, people around the world sat in front of their TVs or devices, waiting for the show. When the robots came on stage, everyone was shocked. These humanoid robots danced to the lively rhythm of the northern yangko dance. What was more surprising was that they could even twirl handkerchiefs, a traditional part of yangko.
This fantastic performance showcases the great progress of Chinese technology made during the past decades. It also shows that traditional culture can be combined with the ever-changing technology, which has become a hit in the global community.
第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
Determined to help, she started brainstorming ways to save the garden. She decided to take action. She made posters about the garden’s difficult situation and posted them around the neighborhood. She also organized a bake sale, enlisting the help of her friends and family. The community began to notice. People stopped by to buy treats and ask about the garden. Maggie’s efforts were paying off. She collected enough money to buy new seeds and pay the water bill for a while.
Maggie’s effort also inspired the entire community to get involved. Neighbors who had never cared for the garden before began volunteering their time, bringing tools, and sharing gardening tips. With their joint effort, the once struggling community garden flourished, becoming a vibrant hub where people of all ages came together to nurture nature. Maggie’s dream of having a place to grow plants had become a reality, and she couldn’t be happier, knowing she had made a difference.

M: I recently read about a theory called “Orchids and Dandelions”. Psychologists use these two flowers to categorize elderly personalities. It reminds me of my grandparents. My grandma is like a dandelion, while my grandpa is more like an orchid.

M: Kacey, could you share how your music career began
W: Sure. I grew up in a small, remote town called Golden in Texas, and I started singing in an oversized cowgirl hat at age 9. When I turned 18, I placed seventh in the TV singing competition Nashville Star, which helped me land work as a professional songwriter.
M: Five years ago, you took home four Grammys, including Album of the Year for Golden Hour.
W: Yeah, I’m now 35 and have earned many awards over the years. However, it wasn’t until my latest album, Deeper Well, that I truly felt known to the public. It has sold 66,000 copies in the US so far, which is the best first-week performance of my career.
M: I noticed Deeper Well blends country, folk, and even Celtic melodies. Did you create it in a quiet countryside house
W: Actually, it was made in bustling New York City. I walked through Washington Square Park every day, drawing inspiration.
M: The album Golden Hour has explored love, the world, and personal feelings. What about this one
W: Well, In Deeper Well, there’s no teenage yearning, just lessons learned for grown-ups.

In some Chinese schools, competitions are held where the student who can accurately recite the most digits of pi wins. In Germany, schools encourage students to express their artistic talents through art displays centered around pi, ranging from pi-inspired paintings to mathematical sculptures.
For tonight’s lecture, we are honored to have Mr. Russell Wang, who will share with us some interesting stories about pi in history. Mr. Wang is a popular science writer ...
