Spring Festival Cleaning
Spring Festival cleaning, an essential tradition in Chinese culture, symbolizes sweeping away the old year’s misfortune and embracing good luck in the new year.
Last year, I joined my family in cleaning our home a week before the Spring Festival. We started by dusting furniture and organizing untidy shelves. Then, we engaged in washing windows, mopping floors, and even repainting the front door. Old and unused items were thrown away, making the house feel refreshed.
This experience not only brightened our home but also deepened our family bond. Working together made the task enjoyable, and the festive atmosphere left me with a sense of renewal and anticipation for the coming year.
“Someone might be trapped under the snow in the tree well,” Zuber thought. Without hesitation, he quickly skied towards the moving snowboard. When he got closer, he shouted, “Is anyone there ” Steger heard his voice and replied loudly. Zuber realized the situation was urgent. He took out the shovel from his backpack and started to dig the snow around the tree well. The snow was hard, but he didn’t give up. After several minutes of hard work, he finally saw Steger’s face. With great effort, he pulled Steger out of the snow.
Once they were out, Steger wrapped Zuber in a bear hug. “Thank you so much! You saved my life,” Steger said, his voice full of emotion. Just then, Steger’s friends arrived. They were shocked to see Steger safe and sound. They all expressed their gratitude to Zuber, saying that his help was a lifesaver. Zuber smiled and said, “I’m just glad I could help. It’s what anyone would do in that situation.” Then, they all sat down for a while, sharing their experiences and feelings. After that, they skied down the mountain together, with a new friendship formed among them.

W: Exactly.
Text 10(172
M: We spend hours dreaming of getting away from it all. Two men from the Solomon Islands accidentally did that. They spent 29 days away from the fierce competition after getting lost at sea. They set off from an island on September 3rd in a small motorboat, heading to another island. It was a trip they had taken several times before. Soon after they set out, a storm messed up their navigation system. They lost their ability to find their location at sea. The storm blew them off course. They ended up 400 km away, off the coast of Papua New Guinea. Rather than be upset, they said they enjoyed the unplanned adventure. One man said, “We didn’t know where we were but we did not expect to be in another country.” They survived by eating fruits they’d brought for their journey. A fisherman spotted their floating boat and they were rescued. The man added, “I look forward to going back home, but I guess it was a nice break from everything.”

由文章第四段中“Today, ephedrine is known for its ability to ease breathing and is recognized as a drug that can both narrow blood vessels(血管)and reduce certain types of bleeding. But the stimulant can also increase blood pressure and heart rate to dangerous levels. Writings from ancient China show ephedra plants have been used in traditional cold remedies (感冒药) for thousands of years and they are still sold for that purpose in markets in parts of Africa and Asia. (如今,麻黄碱因其能够缓解呼吸问题而闻名,也被认为是一种既能收缩血管又能减少某些类型出血的药物。但这种兴奋剂也可能使血压和心率升高到危险水平。中国古代文献表明,麻黄植物已被用作传统感冒药数千年,至今在非洲和亚洲部分地区的市场上仍有出售。)”可知,本段主要讨论麻黄碱的用途。故选D。
B推理判断题。由文章第五段“Morales says the burial “appears to have held special meaning”, noting that the ancient site also contained evidence of butchered Barbary sheep and the large birds (bustards). “It is possible that ephedra was consumed alongside these special foods during a ritual feast attended by the group and that all these items were subsequently buried in the site with the dead.”
由文章最后一段中““Ephedra is a powerful plant that can act as a strong stimulant as well as having medicinal properties. But it is also potentially dangerous and its use suggests a deep understanding of its effects. It is now impossible to know exactly why prehistoric people in Morocco were consuming the plant. But no type of use should be ignored, particularly given the context of a burial ceremony,” says archaeologist Karen Hardy of the U.K.’s University of Glasgow. (英国格拉斯哥大学的考古学家Karen Hardy表示:“麻黄是一种强效植物,既可以作为强效兴奋剂,又具有药用价值。但它也可能具有潜在危险性,它的使用表明古人对其功效有着深刻的理解。现在已无法确切知道摩洛哥史前人为何要食用这种植物。但考虑到葬礼的背景,任何一种用途都不应被忽视。”)”可知,石器时代的人们很好地理解了这种植物的效果。故选C。
A主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是由第一段“The earliest evidence for the use of plants as drugs — possibly for medication or a pick-me-up — may have been found amid human remains in a 15,000-year-old cave burial in North Africa. (在北非一个有着15,000年历史的洞穴墓葬中的人类遗骸中,可能发现了人类最早将植物用作药物——可能是为了治疗或提神——的证据。)”和第三段“Study lead author Jacob Morales, an archaeobotanist, said the discovery highlights the important role of plants in Stone At lifeways. And the researchers think they were consumed during the burial — suggesting the plant was widely used by the Stone Age people who lived nearby at the time. (该研究的主要作者、植物考古学家Jacob Morales表示,这一发现凸显了植物在石器时代生活方式中的重要作用。研究人员认为,麻黄果是在葬礼期间被食用的,这表明当时住在附近的石器时代人广泛使用这种植物。)”可知,文章主要讲述了在北非一个15000年前的洞穴墓葬中发现麻黄果的研究,这表明石器时代的人们可能已经将植物作为药物使用。因此,文章主要讨论的是关于石器时代麻黄使用的证据。故选A。

The pond was silent, until the first cry: “Found something!” A swimmer dived into the water and appeared with a pair of children's swimming goggles. Over the next hour, on a cloudy Saturday morning in July, the team of 15, all women over 65, hunted for trash across the 28-acre Mares Pond, at depths of up to eight feet. The divers turned up wooden boards, beer cans and countless other bits of garbage. When the team returned to shore, they were cracking jokes about the div e and their achievements.
These are the Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage(OLAUG). Since 2017, the group, which accepts only older women as members, has made it its mission to remove trash from ponds across Cape Cod in Massachusetts. When Susan, a retired psychologist, began swimming in the ponds, the pond was one of worries for her. In 2017, she rounded up two friends and approached a stranger with a kayak (小艇), and together they cleared litter from a pond. Soon others joined them, and they found a sense of wonder in the pond cleanups. “It's a different world under the surface. You see fish of all different sizes. You see turtles. It's beautiful. It's all underwater miracles,” says Susan.
While some people have questioned why they refer to themselves as “old ladies”, and suggest that they should open the group to all ages and to men, the group member Baur believes that the “old lady” identity is a crucial part of what the group is about. “Over 65, if you're healthy enough to do what we're doing, it is the age of gratitude,” Baur says. She notes that part of the goal of OLAUG is to demonstrate that older women, working as a team, can do a lot more than people might think.
24. What were the swimmers doing in the pond in Para.1
A. Hunting for hidden treasures. B. Detecting recyclable rubbish.
C. Clearing rubbish from the lake. D. Spotting signs of climate change.
25. Why did Susan gather her friends
A. She worried about the life after retirement.
B. She wanted to join forces to clean up the pond.
C. She desired to get people engaged in swimming.
D. She meant to spread her professional knowledge.
26. How does Baur view their “old lady” identity
A. It represents the qualities of the old people.
B. It shows their ability to contribute to society.
C. It is their special way of exploring the world.
D. It should be revised to include various people.
27. Which of the following best describes the OLAUG
A. Far-reaching. B. Professional. C. World-famous. D. Temporary.

In a new study published in the British Journal of Health Psychology, researchers from the Universities of Bath and Southampton have revealed how just 10 minutes of daily mindfulness (正念) practice can improve wellbeing, ease depression and anxiety and help people to be more motivated to improve their lifestyle — including healthier exercise, eating and sleeping habits.
The research recruited 1,247 adults from 91 countries and utilized a free mobile app called Medito to deliver brief daily mindfulness sessions. Participants were randomly allocated to either a month-long mindfulness routine or a control group that listened to excerpts (节选) from “Alice in Wonderland”. The mindfulness sessions included relaxation exercises, intention-setting, body scans, breath-focused attention and self-reflection. Surveys conducted before and after the 30-day training period revealed substantial improvements in the mindfulness group:
Reduced Depression by 19.2% more than control group;
Improved Wellbeing by 6.9% more;
Decreased Anxiety by 12.6% more;
Attitudes to Health got more positive by 7.1% over control group;
Behavioural Intentions to look after health increased by 6.5% beyond control group.
These benefits were largely maintained after 30 days. In follow-up surveys one month later(Day 61), the mindfulness group showed long-term improvements in their wellbeing, notably a reduction in depression, more positive attitudes and even better sleep.
This research is among the first to link mindfulness practice to broader lifestyle changes, underscoring its potential for promoting healthier living habits like exercising regularly. Masha Remskar, the lead researcher and an expert in behavior change, emphasized that even short daily mindfulness practice can be a powerful tool for mental health improvement. Dr. Max Western from the University of Bath stressed the potential global impact of a light-touch, affordable mindfulness intervention (介入) on healthy lifestyle behaviors, noting its benefits still lasted after the course ended, indicating that it can help build sustainable habits.
The study was supported by the UKRI Economic and Social Research Council and collaborated with the Medito Foundation, a non-profit promoting mindfulness globally through a free app alternative to subscription based services. Medito paved the way for the “30 Day Challenge”, but had no part in data collection, analysis or publication.
28. What can be inferred about daily mindfulness
A. It can cure depression and anxiety.
B. It may lead to sustainable benefits.
C. Its benefits are limited to stress reduction.
D. It is especially effective for severe depression.
29. What does the underlined word “underscoring” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Highlighting. B. Ignoring. C. Doubting. D. Transforming.
30. What does the Medito Foundation do in the study
A. Fund the research and collect data. B. Analyse the data and release results.
C. Make profits and monitor the process. D. Facilitate the study and spread mindfulness.

The earliest evidence for the use of plants as drugs — possibly for medication or a pick-me-up — may have been found amid human remains in a 15,000-year-old cave burial in North Africa.
According to a study published this month in Scientific Reports, researchers discovered ephedra cones (麻黄果) in an ancient burial site at the Cave of Pigeons in northeastern Morocco. Ephedra cones contain ephedrine, a powerful stimulant that speeds up communication between the brain and body.
Study lead author Jacob Morales, an archaeobotanist, said the discovery highlights the important role of plants in Stone At lifeways. And the researchers think they were consumed during the burial — suggesting the plant was widely used by the Stone Age people who lived nearby at the time.
Today, ephedrine is known for its ability to ease breathing and is recognized as a drug that can both narrow blood vessels(血管)and reduce certain types of bleeding. But the stimulant can also increase blood pressure and heart rate to dangerous levels. Writings from ancient China show ephedra plants have been used in traditional cold remedies (感冒药) for thousands of years and they are still sold for that purpose in markets in parts of Africa and Asia.
Morales says the burial “appears to have held special meaning”, noting that the ancient site also contained evidence of butchered Barbary sheep and the large birds (bustards). “It is possible that ephedra was consumed alongside these special foods during a ritual feast attended by the group and that all these items were subsequently buried in the site with the dead.”
“Ephedra is a powerful plant that can act as a strong stimulant as well as having medicinal properties. But it is also potentially dangerous and its use suggests a deep understanding of its effects. It is now impossible to know exactly why prehistoric people in Morocco were consuming the plant. But no type of use should be ignored, particularly given the context of a burial ceremony,” says archaeologist Karen Hardy of the U.K.'s University of Glasgow.
32. What is paragraph 4 mainly discussing about ephedrine
A. The danger. B. The popularity. C. The tradition. D. The usage.
33. Why are Barbary sheep and bustards mentioned in paragraph 5
A. To reveal the origin of crucial custom.
B. To indicate the significance of the funeral.
C. To showcase the lifestyles of ancient times.
D. To illustrate the widespread use of ephedra.
34. What does Karen Hardy imply in the last paragraph
A. Ephedra was primarily used for medical purposes.
B. Ancient rituals relied solely on plant-based practices.
C. Stone Age people understood the effects of the plant well.
D. The burial site provides clear evidence of medicinal uses.
35. What does the text mainly talk about
A. Evidence of ephedra use in Stone Age.
B. The risks and benefits of using ephedrine.
C. Medicinal practices in ancient North Africa.
D. The role of ritual feasts in prehistoric cultures.

Steger grew up in Bellingham, Washington, about an hour's drive from where he was now, trapped in the Mount Baker Ski Area. The remote place is marked by ropes and signs to warn people that they're leaving the safe zone. Steger and his three fellows had all the required equipment, a two-way radio and a backpack with a shovel when they started their second skiing in the morning. On that Friday run, Steger's friends were in front of him when Steger, moving through the trees, ran into trouble.
The front of his board hit a small branch hidden under new snow. Steger fell into a tree well (树坑). Before he could call for help, he was upside down in deeper snow than he'd ever been in. All he could see was blackness. One of Steger's arms was pinned next to his body. Luckily, his other arm had ended up next to his face, so he managed to push the snow away from his mouth, creating a small air pocket. To prevent snow from falling in and covering his mouth, he pulled the tip of his jacket over his face. And now all he could do was stay calm and wait to be rescued.
He figured two or so minutes had passed. Then the two-way radio on his shoulder crackled with messages from his friends “Where are you Let's know if you're in front of us!” He replied and mentioned about his situation. He knew that his friends were downhill from where he was stuck. His friends were surprised and convinced him that they were on their long difficult way back up the hill to rescue him. Meanwhile, it was up to Steger to get himself out, or he'd die.
Then he felt his snowboard, still attached to his feet, move. Francis Zuber, 28-year-old, had gone to Mount Baker Ski Area that Friday to ski. As he sped down the slope, Zuber caught a glimpse of something red. That's when he saw that the upside-down snowboard in a tree well was moving.
