I tried to lower levels of thestress hormone by following the conventional wisdom: get some exercise, get enough sleep, maintain a healthy work-life balance. But following this prescription only works during the leaststressful times.I’m a lifelong novelty seeker. What I enjoyed included hitchhiking across the state andgoing for a bungee jumping. This penchant served me well in my second year of graduate school. As the pressure to pass my qualifying exam was mounting, I needed some kind of release. So, Iinvited one of my fellow graduate students to come swimming with me—in a river, in the middleof winter. The moment I plunged into the freezing water, I immediately felt a surge of energy and fear.Quickly coming back the surface, I gulped cold air and slowly got into a more focused state. Istayed in the water as long as I could, my skin burning from the cold. My friend and I agreed itwas a real rush and that we would come back the next weekend. And so it became our weekly routine. Although the energizing rush of adrenaline(肾上腺素)was the initial pleasure, I found the plunge had other unexpected benefits, too. Stimulating mysympathetic nervous system in the short term had a comforting effect in the long term. I noticedI was approaching my work with a calmer state of mind and taking the failures easier. The seasons changed and the water was no longer cold, but the stresses of graduate schoolremained. I began to explore other types of activities that would have the same effects I had feltfrom the cold winter swims. Among my adrenaline-inducing activities now are mountain biking, rock climbing, or listening to metal music on my walk to work. If it is really necessary, merelytaking a cold shower can do the trick. Long after I return to the lab, my focused, energeticmindset persists.Regular adrenaline-inducing activities can be an invaluable tool. After long hours of labwork, it is hard to motivate myself to sit down to write my thesis. So before I get started, Ishould probably take a cold shower for my healthy dose of adrenaline.24. A studyconducted by Vitality UK polled 6,000 pairs of mothers (aged 45-59) and daughters(aged 20-29)on how often they exercised including walking, gym classes or team sports. 27% of the motherssaid they exercised at least five times a week, compared with only 19% of their daughters.Meanwhile 78% daughters didn’t participate in sport because they feared being judged ontheir figures. Stephanie Hilborn, the chiefexecutive of Women in Sport, said, “A lot need to be done to boost women’s physical activity, such as allowing them enough time and providing more help. Experts from Vitality said thesports industry as well as workplaces should promote women’s fitness by providing saferoutdoor spaces and flexible working hours, and encouraging ‘exercise snacks’ throughout theday, such as lunchtime yoga, or walking meetings. Meanwhile the National Health Service isbeing urged to prescribe exercise classes to women, and to ensure they are not given outdatedguidance, like discouraging exercise at pregnancy stage”.“Our cultural norm that women prioritize caregiving over self-care should also be changed. But a shift in how women perceive exercise should top our agenda: to move the focus away fromweight loss to health improvement,” Hilborn stressed.28. Work demands discipline and training; leisure is easy and enjoyable andcomes naturally. When our work is most demanding, we typically define leisure as its opposite: completeinactivity. For example, when a burned-out 51-year-old CEO of a $68 billion investment firmabruptly quit his job in 2022, he explained to reporters what he planned to do next: “I just wantto go sit at the beach and do nothing.” Even if we’re not finding our work so tiring as his, westill talk about taking a break from work, which allows us to reenergize—in order to work moreand better. Either way, we’re defining leisure in relation to work.I reject this whole way of thinking. Leisure is a valuable, constructive part of life, and wemisunderstand leisure when we define it as work’s opposite. We may think that the best way toget happier is, like the CEO, to “go sit at the beach and do nothing.” But researchers have foundthat this kind of do-nothing leisure, including vacation travel, provides only minor, temporaryboosts of happiness. What gives us more sustained well-being are pursuits involving socialengagement, personal reflection, and outdoor activities. As a professor, I want everything I do to be generative, instead of wasting a minute onfruitless pursuits. Leisure is not straightforward or easy. I’d like to use my nonwork activities, asmuch as my work ones, to become a wiser, happier, more effective person. We must treat leisurewith every bit as much seriousness as we do our careers. When we understand and practiceleisure properly, we can achieve our best selves—and even our capacity to transform society forthe better. The point here is that just as we should be excellent at our jobs, we should becomeexcellent at leisure. Doing leisure well will generate the sort of growth in our well-being thatwork cannot provide. If you don’t do leisure well, you will never find life’s full meaning.32. Why does the author mention common sense at the beginning A. To make a comparison. B. To introduce a concept.C. To present an example. D. To lead in an argument.33. What does the example of the CEO convey A. People should retire when earning enough.B. People should change attitudes towards work.C. People tend to connect leisure with work.D. People tend to make future plans in advance.34. According to researchers, what contributes to continuous well-being A. Sunbathing on the beach. B. Aimlessly wandering.C. Community service. D. Playing video games.35. What is the author’s opinion about leisure A. Leisure is opposite to work.B. Leisure is a state of inactivity.C. Leisure means escaping work temporarily.D. Leisure deserves to be treated seriously. Ten years ago I became fascinated by the question: why are some work teams moreproductive and innovative than others That began a multi-year research program. We surveyedteams over time—some based in the UK, others spanning other countries. We observed howteam members behaved. 36 We found productive and innovative teams are “hot spots”of energy. Their magic contains three factors.37 . It may be a goal or a vision of the future that was so exciting that it really fuelthe energy of the team. They all pulled together. Yet this alone is not sufficient. Some of the dulland negative teams also had inspiring objectives, but the culture of the team was such that noone was prepared to work together, they were overwhelmed with competition, fear and mistrust. In contrast, the more productive teams have a culture of co-operation and trust. Don’t getme wrong. These were not simple-minded teams with everyone agreeing with each other. In fact, the level of disagreement within both the under-performing and the high-performing teams wasoften the same. 38 Those in the hot spots teams were more likely to discuss these areasof conflict openly, to understand the perspective of the other, and work together to resolve theseconflicts. In our everyday lives we find it easy to work with colleagues who have similar experiencesand viewpoints to us. We have so much in common that our interactions go smoothly. 39We are faced with new and rapidly changing situations where we have limited sharedunderstanding of what to do. As a result, we simply go back to old solutions. This is whendiversity of thinking matters. Now there are people with other ways of looking at the world, other experiences and other skills. 40A. Productive teams have a motivating aim.B. These diverse mindsets will generate new solutions.C. The difference lies in the source of their disagreements.D. What distinguished them was how they handled these conflicts.E. A unique culture is the key to a productive and innovative team.F. And we measured the flows of information within and between the teams.G. However, the disadvantage becomes apparent when circumstances change.英语试题 第 7 页 共 10 页{#{QQABLYu4wggYkBSACR4KQUUaCEmQkJIiLUoEBUAVOAxKQJFIBIA=}#}第三部分 语言运用 (共两节,满分 30分)第一节 (共 15小题;每小题 1分,满分 15分)Rose Chin, 65 years old, was partially paralyzed after a stroke. Luckily, a few of the ladieswent together and taught me. That’s all I needed. I learned that granny stitch(针脚) and beforelong I had a blanket made. I was so proud of my little accomplishment and it seemed soimportant that I made quite a few more that same year. I even included a note in each blanket, asa form of encouragement, which read: Every day is a new chance to embrace life! Then it was a Saturday afternoon. I was engaged in another volunteer task when mydoorbell rang. I hurried to answer it. To my surprise and delight, there stood Karen Sharp, whohad been one of my very best friends ever since elementary school. Karen and her family had tomove away a few years ago because her husband Jim lost his job. Excitedly, I guided Karen intothe kitchen, where I poured a cup of tea for both of us and the conversation began. To my delight, Karen seemed to be calm, rested and, most of all, self-assured, which were afew qualities that she had seemed to lose during the last few months before they moved away. Iwondered what had caused the positive change. We talked about our happy time in the past. Karen told me that they had a financial problemand life was really tough after they moved away. Besides, she fell ill after and became more andmore depressed. Staring at the familiar words, I felt a mix of shock and warmth spreadingthrough me. I told Karen that it was I who made the blanket and wrote the note as part of a volunteer activity.Karen hugged me tightly, tears streaming down her face. She said that those words had been like a ray ofsunshine in her darkest days, giving her the strength to fight against depression and the courage to facedifficulties. That note had convinced her that every day was indeed a new chance, and she gradually regained herhope for life.Inspired, Karen decided to offer her own contribution. She asked me to teach her how to crochet so that shecould make blankets for others in need too. From then on, we spent a lot of time together, with me patientlyshowing her different stitches and techniques. Karen learned quickly and soon became proficient. She also startedwriting encouraging notes to accompany the blankets. Together, we made many more blankets and sent them tovarious charity centers. Our small act of kindness continued to spread warmth and hope, just like the note thathad once changed Karen's life.Possible version two:I recognized my note at once. A wave of emotion washed over me as I gently took the familiar slip of paperfrom her hand. Those were my words, written with hope and care, never knowing who would receive them. Andnow they seemed to carry a deeper meaning. Karen’s eyes glistened with tears as she explained how that small, kind gesture had lifted her spirits during such a dark time. It felt surreal to know that something so small, something I had made with love, had traveled through life’s twists and turns to find someone I once held so close. We hugged tightly, no words needed, just the warmth of understanding between old friends.Inspired, Karen decided to offer her own contribution. She asked me to teach her how to crochet, just as thosekind ladies had once taught me. “I want to pass on the kindness I received,” she said, her voice filled withdetermination. Every week, we met to crochet, and with each stitch, she grew stronger—more confident, morejoyful. By the next winter, she had made several blankets, each with her own heartfelt note attached inside. Handin hand, we delivered them to people in need. I watched Karen transform, realizing that a simple act of love canripple through lives and come full circle in the most unexpected, beautiful ways.听力原文Text 1M: When was the last time you ate something W: Lunchtime, I guess. I’ve ordered a quick-drying paint, but even so…W: You’re saying the actors won’t be able to use the stage for a while (12)M: Yeah. Probably at least 24 hours, to be safe.W: Okay, no problem. I’ll ask Mrs. Wallace if we can use the gym for Friday’s practice. (12) The basketballteam is playing away, so it should be fine. Mary, where are we with the lighting (13)3{#{QQABLYu4wggYkBSACR4KQUUaCEmQkJIiLUoEBUAVOAxKQJFIBIA=}#}Text 9M: Word count check… Hey, I’ve done 800 words so far! (14)W:Wow!M: Yeah, I just need 200 more words to reach the required word count. How about you W: I’ve only written half as many as you. (14) I hate these types of projects. They make me wish I’d takengeography or psychology instead! (15)M: You’d still have to write essays for them.W: Sure. But I wouldn’t need to remember all these dates! (15)M: Well, if we don’t learn from the past, we’ll repeat the same mistakes in the future.W: But society has changed so much over the past 100 years, and many of the big challenges we’re facing todayare completely new. Shouldn’t we be focusing on the present M: True. Our ancestors (祖先) may not have been able to imagine climate change or the Internet, but theystill experienced the same joys and bothers that we do. (17)W: I guess so…M: By studying the past, we’re able to make better decisions for the future.W: That’s true. We shouldn’t get stuck in the past, but I guess it can help guide us forward.Text 10Hey everyone! Today, we’re visiting LEGO House in Billund, Denmark with our three kids. (19)We lovevisiting kid-friendly destinations — that’s what we do on this channel! As long-time viewers will know, we’vevisited Legoland theme parks everywhere from Germany to Japan. But LEGO House was a totally newexperience. We bought timed entry tickets to the “Experience Zones”. The Red Zone is where we can buildanything we want. Here’s Oscar creating his own castle. Since he’s only five, I was worried that he mightget bored, but this kept him busy for ages! The Blue Zone has car racing and really fun digital games toplay. Our eldest, Liam, really enjoyed this zone. The middle child, Chloe, preferred the Yellow Zone, (19)where she can create animals and flowers, and bring them to life on a digital dance stage! Lunch at the MINICHEF restaurant was a totally unique experience. (20)We had to “build” our order using LEGO bricks, whichwas so fun. The food itself was surprisingly delicious, and our order was delivered by the cutest LEGO robots!(20) Tomorrow, we’re off to the original Legoland theme park. We’d love to take you with us, so don’tforget to subscribe!4{#{QQABLYu4wggYkBSACR4KQUUaCEmQkJIiLUoEBUAVOAxKQJFIBIA=}#} 展开更多......
