1 Why is the dodo “just a character” to some readers
Because people don’t see them in the real world.
2 What do “as happy as a clam” and “as dead as a dodo” mean
“As happy as a clam” means being very happy.
“As dead as a dodo” means dying out like dodos.
3 Why does the writer use the two expressions at the end of the passage
To call on people to protect animals.
as happy as a clam 非常高兴的,相当满足的
as dead as a dodo 彻底死亡;已经失效;不再使用
习语,省略了后面的 at high water(涨潮)。比喻像涨潮时的蛤蜊一样快乐,因为海水退潮时蛤蜊很容易被捕食,到了涨潮时则无须担心,在潮水中安全地飘荡。clam:名词,意为“蛤;蛤蜊”。
