What do table football, a Barbie’s house and a toy car all have in common They are all much smaller than
real things. Humans have long been interested in miniature (微小) things. The fashion, marketing, and the design
industry all use miniature one way or another, and the public seems to love it. This is the effect of cuteness
psychology (心理).
The psychology of cuteness is the idea that seeing something small and cute encourages connecting
behaviors and the need to take care of it and protect it. However, our attraction to small objects isn’t fully a result
of a strong hope to act as a parent. More recent research has shown that our feeling to cuteness isn’t necessarily
related to some kind of inborn need to be taken care of, but rather more of a general, positive feeling that can
influence how we socially interact with other people.
Seeing tiny things, humans or animals gives off dopamine (多 巴 胺 ), which is involved with forming
emotional connections. When the body gives off dopamine, it makes us feel in love with the object we are
attracted to. “The human brain is designed to love cute, small things by awarding us with dopamine to make sure
we will love our tiny babies. This protects their survival and, in turn, the survival of we humans,” says Sam Von
Reiche, a psychologist in New Jersey.
Meanwhile, small things bring back the comfort of childhood. In times of stress, we return to things that
gave us comfort at an early age. It doesn’t need to be the exact toy we played with as a child, or even a toy at all.
It could be a miniature model of a thing. We connect tiny objects with the safety and comfort they brought us in an
earlier time in our lives.
Some people may be interested in miniatures because they don’t have the money to get real-life ones.
While we might not be able to own an expensive race car, a miniature copy can offer unbelievable emotional
awards. Certain tiny objects from one’s travels, for example, a tiny Eiffel Tower can bring a sense of connection
to important life stories and the people who have shared our journey.
Depending on one’s needs, a miniature object can bring a sense of pleasure, satisfaction, and even
emotional comfort.
27.What can we learn from the passage
A.The fashion leads to the cuteness psychology.
B.People prefer real objects when they grow up.
C.Our attraction to tiny things brings positive feelings.
D.Expensive race cars bring back the comfort of childhood.
28.According to Sam Von Reiche, ________.
A.dopamine can save humans in a natural way
B.cuteness preference helps with human survival
C.the human brain is designed to love real-life things
D.dopamine can mislead human emotion to feel in love
29.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage

Humans are getting away from the nature gradually because of the developing technology. But now Digital
(数字的) Technology is offering us an opportunity to listen to the sounds in the nature in powerful ways, making
us get closer to the worlds of animals and plants.
All around the nature, there are sounds that we struggle to pick up and understand. Elephants, for example,
communicate with each other using infrasound, a sound far below our human hearing range. Coral (珊瑚) in the
ocean also communicates with each other through sound waves, with one purpose of attracting baby coral to areas
where it can successfully grow. This is a shocking fact as coral doesn’t have any ears!
To pick up sounds humans are normally unable to hear, scientists have placed listening devices (装置) in
these environments. Researchers have attached (连接) tiny microphones to honeybees (蜜蜂) and turtles, and
stuck listening posts that can receive different sound waves from coral reefs (礁) and trees. These devices are
controlled by computers and networked with digital sensors and satellites. When interconnected, these digital
devices work like a hearing aid (助听器): enabling humans to observe and record nature’s sounds beyond the
limits of our own listening ability. After the sounds are recorded, AI is then able to determine their meanings.
With this technology, humans can not only understand the animals, but also communicate back to them. For
example, a team of researchers in Germany decoded the honeybees’ behavior with AI. Then they taught tiny
robots how to do the honeybee dance. Using these dancing machines, the scientists were able to order the
honeybees to stop moving, and to communicate where to fly to collect a specific nectar. In addition to the
possibility of speaking with animals, the research could also be used to create a form of healing for animals and
plants. That’s to say, in the near future, scientists might be able to get coral to grow in certain areas by playing
“healthy reef” sounds, which could help some of the damage we have caused to become healthy again.
Now, Digital Technology provides a new way for humans to listen to the lively sounds all around us. The
dream of allowing humans to communicate with different animals and plants throughout the nature is being on its
way.
30.Which of the following is NOT true about listening devices
A.AI can help to explain the meanings of nature’s sounds.
B.The hearing aid collects the sounds from the animals or plants.
C.Scientists need to connect the devices with computers and networks.
D.The devices can record nature’s sounds beyond people’s listening ability.
31.The word “healing” in Paragraph 4 probably means “ ________ ”.
A.feeding B.killing C.repairing D.designing
32.What can you infer from the last paragraph
A.Scientists are likely to discover a new way of recording.
B.Humans will have better communication with the nature.
C.It’s possible for people to dance with the honeybee together.
D.Digital Technology can be used to communicate with anything.
33.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage
A.To discuss how to control listening devices.
B.To compare different ways for communication.
C.To introduce a technology to get closer to the nature.
D.To suggest how to improve people’s listening ability.

It was 5:30 on a Saturday morning in August. It was quiet in Gabriel Silva’s house. Axel, their l-year-old
family dog, jumped on Gabriel’s parents’ bed to wake them up. They guessed he needed to go outside.
But Axel wouldn’t go out. When Gabriel’s father opened the back door, Axel rushed toward Gabriel’s
room. Inside, Gabriel was awake. He woke up around 5 a.m. and couldn’t feel anything in one of his arms. There,
he lost his balance and fell on the floor.
Gabriel’s father followed Axel to his room. He told his father that he was trying to walk but the right side
of his body could feel nothing. His father could hardly understand him. Gabriel’s speech was unclear. He drove
Gabriel to a hospital. Doctors said that he was having a stroke (中风). It happens when the blood supply to part of
the brain is cut off.
Gabriel has got back his ability to speak and walk. The doctors treated Gabriel and said that Gabriel might
have never recovered if Axel hadn’t made the family wake up that morning.
Gabriel said there were no warning signs before the stroke. One of Gabriel’s blood vessels had torn, the
doctor said. The blood vessel was connected to Gabriel’s brain. The tear stopped blood from flowing to part of his
brain. During a stroke, neurons (神经元) in the brain, which receive and send messages from the body to the brain,
die from being short of blood.
Gabriel said he still didn’t have much feeling on the right side of his body. He learned to write and eat with
his left hand. He took medicines every day and had special training two days per week. For now, Gabriel is being
home-schooled. He hopes to return to high school in December.
Gabriel’s father said Axel didn’t finish watching over his son. Since Gabriel returned home, Axel followed
him around the house and slept in his room. He seldom left his side. The doctor said Axel was worthy of a lot of
credit (赞扬). “It’s amazing how immovable (不动摇的) a dog was when he knew something was going on.” he
said.

【答案】例文:
Dear Chris,
I’m glad to know that you’re interested in traditional Chinese culture. There are different kinds of activities
inheriting traditional Chinese culture. Museums and communities often hold public shows for people. Students in
our school usually enjoy traditional culture activities which are welcomed by both teachers and students. For
example, on Dragon Boat Festival, we often make zongzi together.
As for me, I’m a big fan of paper cutting. I usually go to the library to search for the books on it. I have
used scissors to cut the folded paper into simple shapes of animals or plants. I’ve taken part in paper cutting shows
to experience the spirits of traditional Chinse culture. At school, I often share them with my classmates. In this
way, I’ve helped to pass down the skills of making paper cutting and push forward the development of traditional
Chinese culture.

And I wanted Evelyn to visit my house one day, then she'd see how different my house was. My parents use
a video phone so they can use sign language to communicate with callers. We also have a light on the wall that
flashes when the phone or doorbell rings, and our TV is always set to show the captions (字幕). Would Evelyn

When darkness fell, Dad drove us to the brightly lit school, which looked different at night. It felt different,

We stopped in front of the notice board in the hall.
“Look at Amy’s picture!” Mom said, too loud. She does that when she's excited, because she can’t hear
herself. Some older kids turned to stare at us in surprise and I wanted to hide.
Ms. Jennings walked over to us. I introduced my teacher to my family and explained that my parents are

Evelyn nodded. “It’s like a secret code. Would you teach me some words sometime ”

A.Why are we really into small things
B.What do all small things have in common
C.Where does cuteness psychology come from
D.Why are our brains designed to love miniatures
D

四、 阅读表达(共 10 分, 第 1-3 题每小题 2 分, 第 4 小题 4 分)
“It’s amazing how immovable (不动摇的) a dog was when he knew something was going on.” he
said.
34.Where did Axel go when Gabriel’s father opened the back door
35.When does a stroke happen
36.How did Axel watch over Gabriel after he returned home from hospital
