As your children grow up, they need friends, but sometimes, they don’
t understand how to make friends. So, it’s time to tell them how to make friends.
Talk about what friends are like. Ask your children what they think a friend is. Listen to their answers and
then share your opinions on friendship. You might say, “A friend is someone you enjoy spending time with. They
make you feel special, and you can rely on (依赖) them.” Then, encourage them to take part in happy and relaxing
activities.
__________ Storytelling is another great way to help kids learn about friendship. Tell your children a story
about friends. Continue the story until it reaches the point where one character has to make a decision. Then, stop
and ask your children to decide what a friend is like and discuss how to make friends with him or her.
Celebrate your own friendships. Kids learn from you. Let them see that you enjoy great relationships with
your friends! Plan a get-together with a few of them and ask your children to join in it as well. During your time
together, explain why you enjoy being around your friends.
Tell your children to make gifts for their friends. This can show the friends how much your children care
about them. There are many different ways to make gifts. For example, your children could make a card, paint a
picture, or write a song. After they have finished, help them plan a time to give the gifts to their friends.

What brought you and your friends together Was it shared hobbies or
similar personalities Besides these common reasons, genes (基因) may also play a role.
According to a US study with 1, 932 people, friends have a kinship coefficient (亲缘系数) that is 0.0014
higher than in strangers! The kinship coefficient is an easy way to see how genetically related two people are—the
higher the number is, the closer the relation is.
Don’t look down on this number. The kinship coefficient between parents and children is about 0.25. For
first cousins, it’s about 0.0625, while for fourth cousins, it’s around only 0.001. This means you might share more
genes with your best friend than with some distant (远房的) family members.
The question is—why are people with a high level of the kinship coefficient more likely to become friends
The research team found that many of the top one percent of similar genes have something to do with the sense of
smell. This means that close friends may have a similar sense of smell.
The study also showed that people who become close friends usually have similar body smells. Researchers
collected sweat samples (汗液样本) from 20 pairs of friends. They all became close in a short time. Using an
e-nose and human volunteers to study the smells, they found that friends’ body smells were more alike than those
of strangers. So, next time you hug your friends, you might notice that they smell a bit like you!
1.What’s the writer’s main purpose of writing Paragraph 1
A.To introduce a topic. B.To give examples. C.To provide a solution.
2.What can we learn from Paragraphs 2 and 3
A.Best friends have a higher kinship coefficient than first cousins.
B.The kinship coefficient between two friends is 0.001.
C.Best friends can share more genetic similarities than distant family members.
3.According to the study, who are more likely to become friends
A.People who live in the same neighborhood.
B.People who have similar body smells.
C.People who have similar looks.
4.Which part of a magazine is the passage probably taken from
A.Travel. B.Sports. C.Science.
【答案】1.A 2.C 3.B 4.C
What brought you and your friends together Was it shared hobbies or similar personalities
Besides these common reasons, genes may also play a role.”
故选 A。
根据“friends have a kinship coefficient that is 0.0014 higher than in strangers… you might share
more genes with your best friend than with some distant family members.”
根据“close friends may have a similar sense of smell”和“friends’ body smells were more alike
than those of strangers”可知,体味相似的人更可能成为朋友。故选 B。
Is your mobile phone directory full of phone numbers of people you
don’t really want to talk to Do you go out with people from work or school more often than with your real
friends Do you say “yes” to invitations because you think you should, not because you want to If you answered
“yes” to at least two of these questions, then perhaps you need to “edit your friends”.
Nowadays people like to spend a lot of time with people at work or classmates at school. The result is that
we don’t have enough time to see our real, close friends. As our lives get busier, it becomes more important to
spend the little free time we have with people we really want to see, people we love and who really love us.
Who are the friends you need to edit A few years ago, I read a book about how to get rid of unnecessary
possessions (物品). It said you should ask yourself about each thing you have: Is it useful Do I like it Do I feel
better every time I look at it If the answer is no to any of those questions, you should throw it away. Maybe we
should ask similar questions about our friends. What kind of friends will you probably need to edit Sometimes it’
s an old friend. Somebody who you used to have a lot in common with, but who, when you meet now, you have
very little or nothing to say to. Or it might be a new friend who you get on quite well with, but who is taking up
too much of your time. Next time one of these people calls you and suggests a meeting, think “Do I really want to
see this person ” and if the answer is no, say no, and make an excuse. In that way you’ll have more time to spend
with your real friends.
1.When do people need to edit their friends
A.They have moved to a different area.
B.They have no time with their real friend.
C.Some of their friends don’t talk very much.
D.Their friends are people from work or school.
2.What does the word “edit” in the passage mean
A.Check and choose. B.Believe and help. C.Miss and see. D.Call and meet.
3.What does the writer want to tell us in Paragraph 3
A.We should often throw some possessions.
B.Most of our friends are not necessary at all.
C.We shouldn’t treat our friends as possessions.
D.We should ask ourselves who our real friends are.
【答案】1.B 2.A 3.D
Nowadays people like to spend a lot of time with people at work or classmates at school.
The result is that we don’t have enough time to see our real, close friends. As our lives get busier, it becomes
more important to spend the little free time we have with people we really want to see, people we love and who
really love us.”
故选 A。

One day in June 2020, I pulled a large box down from the attic (阁楼). Inside were tons of letters. They
were from my friend, Steph.
We have kept in touch for nearly 60 years. We started writing to each other when we were in middle school.
Our letters were on different kinds of paper: lined and unlined. To remember the past better, we decided to turn all
that aged paper into something more meaningful.
One Sunday morning last autumn, we met at my house for a read-through. Before Steph arrived, I carefully
set the scene (场景). I played our favorite song in the background. Like actors in a play, we took turns reading
aloud our words. The lines reminded us that we called each other “sweetie pie”.
That first day, we went through two years in eight hours. By that age, we had become wiser teenagers. We
wrote complete sentences in cursive (连笔字). We talked about famous singers a lot.
Steph and I supported each other with letters through early marriage and motherhood, the death of my
father, our early careers and the death of her father. There were phones, but they were too expensive for us to use
then, so we continued to write. As time went on, the letters became more and more.
Now, the letters are kept in a beautiful box in my study. Steph and I are going to read them again in ten
years. We each also wrote a new secret note and put them in the box. We will read them then.

B.Careers and motherhood, the birth of their fathers.
C.Marriage and childhood, the death of their fathers.

A.The writer and Steph are both 60 years old now.
B.The writer and Steph have babies in the same year.
C.The writer shared everything with Steph in the letters.
D.The writer and Steph will meet again ten years later.

One surprising finding in the science of relationships is that friends are
important to a healthy life and they are just as important for our well-being as healthy eating habits or a good
night’s sleep.
People with strong friendships usually have better mental (心理的) health and studies suggest they’re in
better physical health as well. Researchers have found large social networks lower our risk of early death more
than exercise or eating habits alone. A 10-year Australian study found that older people with a lot of friends were
22 percent less likely to die during the study period than those with few friends.
However, nowadays, people have fewer friends than they used to and are spending more of their time alone.
In 2021, 12 percent of Americans said they had no close friends. While having friends is good for your health, not
having them can be harmful. According to a medical report, loneliness has been connected with higher rates of
depression (抑郁). For older women, loneliness can increase the risk of heart disease by as much as 27 percent.
There are many ideas about the relationship between friendship and better health. A possible reason may be
because it’s easier for healthy people to make friends. At the same time, a strong social network could mean that
someone may find it easier to get medical care. There is also a psychological effect of friendship that likely plays
a role. Friends help us deal with stress (压力). In one study at the University of Virginia, many people felt nervous
when they were asked to climb a rocky hill. But researchers found that when people were standing next to a friend,
they rated the hill less difficult than those who were alone. Brain studies suggest that friendship affects (影响)
brain systems by influencing our feelings, showing why social connection helps mental health and well-being.
Friendship even seems to affect our immune response In one study, 276 healthy volunteers were
given materials having cold virus. Those with various social ties were less likely to catch a cold.
Friends don’t just appear out of thin air. Here are two suggestions for making new connections and keeping
the old ones.
Join a book club, take a class or play a sport. Spending time with people who share the same interests as
you could lead to friendship. A study found that classmates who sat next to each other were more likely to become
close friends. The next time you work out at the gym, for example, you could invite someone to join.
Make the first move. Trust your feeling when you’re meeting new people. We’re good at knowing when
someone is a potential (潜在的) new friend. And you should believe people like you better than you think. Start
with a text. Start small by sending a text message to an old friend you’ve been meaning to reconnect with.
Show your feelings. If a friend reaches out to you to drink coffee, tell them how happy you are when he
reaches out, and that you thank him for the invitation. In a University of Utah study, researchers asked 70 students
to finish a list of interactions——like going to see a movie together or calling just to say hello——with new
friends. After three months, the researchers found that close friendships were more likely to form when the pairs
expressed affection (喜爱) to each other.
1.What can we know about people with strong friendships
A.They are afraid to be alone.
B.They are likely to live longer.
C.They never feel depressed.
D.They do exercise to be healthier.
2.What can we learn from Paragraph 4
A.A good immune response results in more friends.
B.Friendships help us reduce stress and improve well-being.
C.People with long-lasting friendships have sharper brains.
D.We can’t get medical care without a strong social network.
3.The passage is mainly about ________.
A.what close friends mean to us and why we like them.
B.what we can learn from friends and why we need them.
C.how friendships affect us and how we can develop them.
D.why friendships are important and how we choose friends.

A.People who live in the same neighborhood.
B.People who have similar body smells.
C.People who have similar looks.

Get Along, gives kids some useful advice on getting on with friends.
Q1: One of my friends often hangs out with us, but he has never invited me. What can I do
